CLASS PROPHECY Julyl 1969 Dear Mr Truesdell The strangest thmg happened to me a few days ago I saw all of my old classmates 1D Des Moxnes It all happened so oddly that I decxded to wr1te and tell you about lt I was on a xacat1on 1n Des Mo1nes I left for a bus at about 7 35 I knew I had a lot of shop p1ng ahead of me for that day As I walked along th1nk1ng about a new dress I fa1led to not1ce that a man hole 1n the street was not cox ered The next th1ng I knew I was falhng One of the workers drug me to the s1dewalk and apolog1zed for h1s neghgence I f1nally opened my eyes and saw R1chard Hench He explamed h1s Job by saymg that he always had been neat and clean and he wanted h1s c1ty to be the same way I was so enraged by h1s mcompetence that I hur r1ed toward the C1ty Hall to compla1n to the mayor I d1dn't know who the mayor was or how to f1nd h1m but that d1dn't hmder me at all When I reached the C1ty Hall I began to look around I dec1ded to ask someone how to f1nd the mayor The f1rst door to my r1ght was the Marr1age L1cense Bureau I walked 1n The man at the desk was busy so I sat down Suddenly I saw the couple who was gettlng a l1cense was Cora Stecker and Jack Trunkh1ll I rushed ox er to con gratulate them Then they told me that they had been marr1ed and d1vorced three txmes before They nex er could make up thexr mmds I was ta1k1ng w1th them when the man beh1nd the desk sa1d that he had to close So I had to cont1nue down the hall to f1nd the mayor I next came to the Court Room A woman was stand1ng before the Judge She Sald I couldn't help go1ng through the red l1ght Your Honor because I had these funny colored sun glasses on and the hght looked green The Judge smxled and wlnked at her and d1sm1ssed the case When the woman turned around I reallzed lt was none other than Barbara R1ngsdorf She told me that she had become famous on telex1s1on she adxert1ses clothes for women who wear s1zes 54 and aboxe The next case was the State versus Rodney Alexander It seems that Rodney has be come a xery notor1ous gang leader All of h1s Jobs are worked out to prec1s1on w1th the a1d of h1s sl1de rule and some traw elxng hbrary books After th1s trlal was completed the court shorthand reporter rushed toward me It was Ronme Hanna He sa1d that he had become 1n terested 1n th1s work when our Sen1or class went to Algona for Law Day and the court reporter sa1d that there were more men reporters than women Flnally I found the mayor s off1ce The letter1ng on the door read Mayor Mar1lyn Welhousen I went 1n to see her she was x ery glad to see me She told me that all of her success should be attrxbuted to your gox ernment class In gox 't you told her how to be a good c1t1zen but she had dec1ded a bad Cltlzeh makes more money so she d1d ex eryth1ng oppos1te that she had learned and became the Boss of a pol1t1cal mach1ne that 15 1n the Clty Mar1lyn and I dec1ded that we had a lot to talk ox er so w went to a small cafe for lunch We found out that the establ1shment was run by our old class mate Marlanne R1ppentrop We ordered p1zza but she sa1d that she nex er serx es any because she got so t1red of seemg lt mn her Sen1or year Marllyn and I next went to see the state leg1s lature I was xery 1mpressed wlth the lawmakmg bod1es As I sat 1n the balcony a group of teen agers came ID beh1nd me I heard the1r leader say Qu1et' I don t want to mlss a s1ngle so11tary word ReCOgh1Z1ng the XOICB I turned around and saw R1chard Trunkh1ll I started ask1ng h1m questlons to f1nd out what he had been do1ng s1nce graduat1on He was xery per turbed because my quest1ons had prev ented h1m from hearmg the roll call xote on the amend ment to the amendment to the amendment to the b1ll on approprxatmg funds for the Mun1c1pal Park 1n German Valley the thrrd largest c1ty 1n Iowa I f1nally got R1chard to tell me how he became a hxgh school gox 't teacher It seems that when our Sen1or class went to Y1S1Ithe state leg1s1ature 1n 1959 he found h1mself Before that t1me he was Just a wandermg nobody and then he suddenly had a goal H1s story was very 1nterest1ng and when I turned around to thank h1m for h1s t1me I saw h1m moung toward another sect1on where no one else was s1tt1ng As Mar 1lyn and I were leaung the Senate I knocked ox er a scrub pall and began to apolog1ze to the two Jamtors I suddenly reahzed that they were old classmates LaVaughn Akkerman and Sandy Watson Naturally I was curxous as to why they had chosen th1s profess1on They sa1d that they had become mterested 1n th1s career when they were 1n gox 't class It seems that you once ment1oned that many c1ty gox 'ts needed to be cleaned up The mayor had to get back to her off1ce then but before leaung she told me how to get to a good hotel After she left I ha1led a cab The druer was small I couldn't see h1s face And once he got started I had to shut my eyes I xe nes er r1dden with such a crazy dr1ver When the cab f1nally stopped the drn er turned around and who do you th1nk It was 'P Patty W1ll1s' She told me she enJoys dru 1ng a cab because she can let off her frustrat1ons when she's beh1nd the wheel I had to get 1n aga1n though because she had taken me to the wrong hotel After testmg the w1nd and the ce1l 1ng we were off aga1n As I sat there tensely wa1t1ng for us to arrne at my hotel I saw a car come reehng toward us Wham' When I opened my eyes I not1ced I was lex. el w1th the sec ond story w1ndow I looked out of the cab w1ndow I saw two cars beneath us We were exenly Dlled UD We soon found out no one was hurt except for the druer who had caused the acc1dent That person was Roger Re1bsamen I-Ie had a small scratch on h1s arm He explamed that he was 1n an awful hurry to get to M1nnesota The ambulance arru ed and a doctor who turned out to be Lloyd Pommer came to see 1f any one was hurt When he found out that there were no maJor 1nJur1es he came ox er and we began to talk He had become a famous surgeon Th1s d1dn't Surpr1se me because Lloyd always d1d enJoy cuttmg up ln h1s h1gh school days H1s nurse came ox er to ask 1f they shouldn't be gomg back H15 nurse was none other than Juha Wubben Th1s d1dn't surpnse me e1ther because Juha always d1d happen to turn up 1n the I - , Y ' I ' . . . ,, . . . , I I , . - ' .
