-A-'Y-0 THE TIPTONIAN, 1940 6f+ 8141071 G GSS KI Wfhtn the l1 hts go dovxn 1nd the curtaln rmgs up for the Sennor Class Plav 1n the Gymnaslum of Txpton H1gh School each year the 0flTlC13l open1ng of Sen1or act1v1t1es 1S heralded as surely as the first robm 1n February announces that spr1ng IS just around the corner Th1s year on the nlght of Aprxl 19 the S n1ors of 1940 presented the dornest1c comedy 1n three acts Sh1rt Sleeves by Char es u1mby Bur dette The theme of the play vsas the old adage that the complete cy cle from sh1rt sleeves to sh1rt sleeves IS completed 1n three generatlons and a great deal of humor plulosophv and common sense was woven lnto thxs theme The outst mdmg characterxsnc of thas year s play was the excellence of the cast taken as a whole There vscrc no vseak characters no leadmg parts 1n the usual sense of the word but as fine and well balanced a cast as could be found 1n any Hugh School anywhere Th1S fact 15 notable 1n v1ew of the fact that the Senlors of 1940 approached th1s presentauon w1th an 1nfer1or1ty complex due to the h1t wh1ch the class play of 1939 made last sprmg And wh1le th1s years play does not 1n any way take away from the glory of last years It does demonstrate that each class has some dCHl'1ltC contr1but10n to make and how much can be accomphshed w1th effort on the part ofthe students and the verv excellent coach1ng wh1ch M155 Ruth George roster as Franklnn Rand and ullanne Rlchards as ulna hns proud and ar1stocrat1c W1fC were both very good as the parents of four spolltd ch1ldren Donald aged n1neteen portrayed by Jack Ramsay, D1ana aged seventeen by W1lma Jean Palmer and Theodore and Esther twms aged Hfteen by Bob Mclntosh and Eluabeth Ann N1cholson The reacnons of thus typxeal family group when suddenly the famxlv fortune IS lost leads up to a strong f1n1sh w1th the fam1ly r1s1ng to the stature of then' ances tors 1n meetmg thelr problems Bob McIntosh as Theodore alded by h1s tw1n Esther Ehzabeth Ann Nncholson was the typncal pt terbug type of A ner1can youth and the ease Wlth wh1ch he carr1ed thxs humorous role was the h1t of th1s shovs No less outstandmg vsas the performance of Madalyn Hershman as Kntty the Rand s mald of all vsork Both Bob and Madalyn wrung tears of laugh ter from the aud1ence w1th thelr character1zat1ons There was an excellent support1ng cast and great crednt IS due those who managed the deta1ls of prop ertles stage tnckets and all the other deta1ls necessary for a fimshed productnon In the words of a stranger w1th1n our gates vxho just happened to w1tness the play I dldnt real1Le class plays could be so good tlnrty .
