'The Road Is Long With Many Winding Turns That Lead Us In Many Directions n SAGA Tippecanoe Valley High School Mentone, In. Volume III 1977 Election 76 ... Senior Trip ... The national election and the se- nior trip to Washington, D.C. high- lighted the first part of the year. The election was brought closer to us when the campaign brought Walter Mondale and Rosalyn Car- ter to Plymouth. Our marching band greeted them on the Demo- cratic Whistle Stop train. 2 The senior trip on October 18 took 80 members of the class to the nation's capital. While there they visited many places in and around the Washington area. First on the tour was Mt. Vernon, George Washington's home which has been fully restored. Other places visited were the Lincoln Memorial, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, the Jeffer- son Memorial, the Capitol building, Arlington Cemetery and the Ken- nedy Center. Other pages, top clockwise, the White House, Vice-President Mon- dale and TVHS. This page, the Jef- ferson Memorial, Kolleen Bush, Mondale greets C. Norris, T. Stave- dahl, D. McNeeley and T. Long in the IMC, and Mrs. Welch watches a swim meet. 3 Activities March Forward Instead of being quiet and deserted at 3:15, TVHS almost seems busier with all of the many extracurricular activities, practices or competitions taking place. The gym is always in use and most of the time, other groups can be found in the commons or hallways having meetings or practicing. TVHS seems to offer something for everyone in the way of extra- curricular activities. With more girls sports, the sports program is bal- anced and competitive, offering both team and individual sports. During the day, clubs and groups meet and plan their various activi- ties and projects. Top left. W. Smith works out on the weight machine. Top right, ). Moore sets up to throw a pass. Above left, A. Roads Are Opened by Knowledge And Practice There are no finer gifts than these: Good friends and happy memories The road to happiness lies in two simple principles: Find out what it is that interests you and that you do well; And when you find it put your whole soul into it— every energy and ambition and natural ability that you have. —John D. Rockefeller III 6 Life itself can't give you joy, Unless you really will it; Life just gives you time and space- r's up to you to fill it. When good friends walk beside us On the trails that we must keep Our burdens seem less heavy And the hills are not so steep The weary miles pass swiftly Taken in a joyous stride And all the world seems brighter When friends walk by our side. Victory Highlights 76 Homecoming After bursting through a tunnel of fans, the football team exploded to a 26-8 victory over theirhome- coming foes, the Whitko Wildcats. This homecoming was the first one to be celebrated during football season and the victory held special meaning since Whitko was a leader in the TRC conference standings at that time. It was an evening full of pag- eantry, pride and ceremony. The 1976Homecoming queen, Sheila Shewman, was crowned by the reigning queen, Sara Hedington. Greg Kindig was selected as Homecoming King. The Homecoming court in- cluded Kay Earl, Cindy Yeiter, Wendy Smith, Jeff Crissinger, Kevin Eaton, and Kevin McSherry. Faces In The Crowd If you walk as a friend You will as a friend. Wherever you choose to fare If you go with mirth To a far strange land You will find that mirth is there, For the strangest part of this queer old world Is that like will join with like; And who walks with love for his fellow man. An answering love will strike. Let us then be up and doing. With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing. Learn to labour and to wait. —Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Other page, top clockwise, D. Zimmerman, L. Smalley, K. Eaton, F. A Gallery of Awards The great high-road of human welfare and happiness lies along the highway of stead- fast well-doing and they who are the most persistant and work in the truest spirit, will invariably be the most successful. —S. The student council set up two days on which parents could attend school. With half of the students there, the parents got a better perspective of what a nor- mal school day is like. During the day, parents attended classes, tried to open lockers, en- joyed their lunch period and talked to teachers. Students and parents mingle during Swap Day. Knox, it will sprout gold and he will become a millionaire. Finian obtained his crock of gold by stealing it from the leprechauns. In turn, a leprechaun named Og comes to America in hopes of re- turning the crock to Ireland since all the leprechauns have lost their magical powers and are becoming human. Selling ads and year- book subscriptions as well as identifying all the pictures was a time consuming job. Section editors were in charge of laying out their section of the book and direct- ing staff photographers on pictures needed for each page. Chris Vogel, Steve Kruger and Mary Ann Nyenhuis were responsible for taking the necessary pictures along with the help of Terry Klondaris of Cox Studio. This year's book was enlarged to 184 pages to accomodate the newly added activities and sports and to better capture for TVHS students and friends all of the events which took place during the school year. The staff hopes you enjoy and treasure this yearbook. Swing Choir and Girls' Chorus Ciris' Chorus-First row, left to right, seated, D. Rudd, S. Miller. Standing, left to right, T. Sanders, R. Lee, T. We won just about every game, Everyone said we would always have glory and fame. Then shortly basketball came around. And we knew the Vikings were victory bound. The sectional was soon over and done. We knew Tippecanoe Valley would still be Number 1. Before we knew it summer was here. It was the end of one more school year. We said goodbye to the teachers and books. And to the activities and all our friends, And to Tippecanoe Valley High School. £%613SH English classes were divided into four levels with the fourth year optional to seniors. The tennis team finished its sec- ond season of varsity competition with a respectable seven wins and nine losses, it was commendable since our players only have one year of playing experience com- pared to the many years most op- ponents have. The varsity squad dropped its first four matches of the season but got on track and dominated its own invitational to sweep four of five championships over Culver, Whitko, and Triton. The junior varsity record was six wins against five losses. Freshman Dan Tibbets led the way with an impressive seven wins and three losses. Plunging Into Hardwork First row, left to right, L. The girls' swimming team started the year off with new members and a new coach, Mrs. jump. As their coach, she believed that hard work brings out talent so at each practice the girls swam a variety of sprints and long dis- tances with their own special event. Although, their record may not indicate it the girls made improvements all year. Cyndi Daniel and Ann Kline qualified for the sec- tional in Elkhart. Swimmers Break Records This year the Viking swimmers were determined to better last year's record. Through a lot of work and frustration the boys improved tremendously. All of the swimming records were broken during the year which is quite an accom- plishment. Since only one team member graduated, the team has much to look forward to next year. The team highlighted their victorious season by capturing the con- ference-championship, the area track meet, the Viking Relays, the Tingley Invitational and placing 8th of 19 in the sectional. 153 With a talented group of girls. Coach Harmon and the Viking girls' track gave their opposition competition in every meet. The team won many of their meets by wide margins and lost to the defending state champions, Wa- wasee by only eight points. Throughout the season, the team members gained much spirit and poise. The team joined the boys' track team in winning the area track meet for the third year in a row. The team started off with having some of the best hitting averages in the area. The team encoun- tered tougher competition as the season progressed but continued to hit well even though their inexperience hurt on some plays. The Vikings were knocked out of sec- tional play by Culver. 157 For the junior varsity baseball team, it was a rebuilding year and much inexperience. Under the guidance of coaches Igney and Martellaro, the team learned funda- mentals and techniques of baseball. As you look through it, remem- ber the many things that happened, both good and bad. The memories of this year are many. When you look back to the year 1977 what will you remember most? It might be that TVHS sports stand out in your mind. The Valley teams made some impressive marks on the school and the surrounding communities.
