W ' ' .1 1111715.11 .l1.f.I -W 46p Q40 11940 OUR TOWN One hundred years have gone by since John Clark founded our town. After platting the land, he inserted a clause into all deeds for- bidding the erection of log cabins. This early semblance of our deter- mination to keep abreast of the times has never left Tipp and we still welcome all improvements that make us more modern. Clark named the town after his idol, Old Tippecanoe Harrison. Because of the constant conflict with Tippecanoe, Harrison county, the name was changed to Tipp City in 1938. In 1851 our town was incorporated and Levi Booher became the first mayor. During the Civil War, Tippecanoe City sent more men into the Union Army than any other town its size in the valley. We united with Hyattsville in 18 . In the early 1880's, we acquired fourteen acres for our city park which is now an invaluable asset to our town. Three brothers from Tipp-Harry, Herbert, and Joe Miles-or- ganized the Sun Rise Film company, one of the first motion picture companies in the world, and made the first newsreel, a four-minute production, that was shown to the public. Our town library is large and stocked with late editionsg our volun- teer fire department is equipped in the most modern mannerg and our municipal water and electric light plant has the latest machinery. Other improvements are being added at present. We are told that the first hundred years are always the hardest- so here's to the future! 9. The very first schoolhouse was a little log cabin found in Hyattsville at that time not a part of Tipp. Later a build- ing near the Miami river provided a place for the children to learn the three Rs. A new bill in 1853 changed the school districts and necessitated the addition of another building which was located on First street. Following this a two-story brick schoolhouse was built on East Dow street. In 1868 our present site was bought and a large brick structure erected The first graduating class of four received di- plomas in 1878. A temporary building served as school while our present grade building held the complete educational ac- tivities until our present hign fchool vias finished in 1917. The merger of 1935 brought the Monroe township and Tipp schools together. The last addition to our building was a new brick structure raised in 1936 to ac- commodate a Vocational Agriculture de- partment and a very successful school cafe- teria Today our enrollment nears the thou- sand mark Capable supervision and fine teaching staffs haw enabled Tipp schools to make many enviable records in both the sport and scholastic fields and as we still enjoy competent leadership our school achievements shall not be limited to the past alone. flee a nt, e as 001 la . -Ile, 'Q-.Joi 'In Panos: ,E .1 Q F O s 3 vb, 5 'SP ' S054 as Qik I ' ,W ia :PY .E von' ewmf, gon 9 gmvff Y :Km Q. 555' flus- .1-if S' ..: 9 are ls' s 'I mm... mspqnmvsv em-su oss-Q s . au dn up A mn 5' mn December 14 1939 0 I Q I ck' ev' , 'if' W 11 9 .
