M s ll THE T IUGAN TIOGA CENTRAL SCHOOL District Number Three: Towns of Tioga, Barton, Candor, and Nichols, New York Dedication We, the Class of 1959, dedicate this book to our friend and teacher, Mrs. R0llC1't3. Goodfellow, who has guided us on our paths to wisdom, and has caused us to raise our sights to higher goals through her special qualities of patience, tolerance and friendliness. 4 Foreword We feel our theme, Reaching for a Star. is most appropriate at this particular time. Of course, when we say we are reaching for a star, we mean figuratively. Now, however, we can choose a star, and perhaps even in our life time we may be able to get there. The fact that we can reach a star-actually, leads us to aim high, and to proceed with confidence in attaining our goals, for we are encouraged because we are getting closer to the truth when we say nothing is impossible. We have attempted to show how the various parts of our school life have built and supplied the rocket or space ship which will take us to our star whether it be in the heavens or on earth. Reaching for a Star is no longer a wish, a desire, a symbol-suddenly it has real meaning. Contents Direction .,,,. ....... A dministration Personnel -. .... .................... P' 1 V 1' 'S gf, 'A if mg' 'Q History In September of 1955, our crew numbering 60 set forth on our first adventurous trip into space. Mr. Meade and Mr. Corrigan guided this first trip by supervising our magazine sales and candy sales. The trophies for winning the magazine sale were awarded to Carol Taylor and Janice Tobin. The highlight of the trip was the freshman initiation, candlelight service and dance given by the seniors. Under the leadership of Mr. Ruger on our second trip, we advanced further into space, coming closer to our goal by selling refreshments at the basketball games and having many successful dances. At the halfway mark of our school life we embarked on our third trip. We sold stationery, put on a carnival, and tried our hand at acting by producing Aunt Samanthy Rules the Roost, directed by Mrs. Goodfellow. The two memorable mo- ments that took place were the receiving of our class rings, which we're all so proud of, and the Junior Prom. With the help of Mr. Merena and Miss Niciu, we worked hard at the tasks necessary to make this prom a success. Our dance was a wonderful success with the beautiful Oriental theme and the crowning of King Jack and Queen Jean. In the fall of 1958, our crew now numbering 43, began our last year with the presentation of the Senior Play, No Boys Allowed under the direction of Mr. Evans. Our many activities directed by Miss Meyerman and Mr. Evans brought our visions of Washington closer. When we entered high school in September 1955, and began to reach for that far away star of graduation, it seemed far away and unattainable, but now as we hold this star in our hand, we see that it is only the beginning of a lifetime of reaching for higher and higher stars. We, the fifth graduating class of Tioga Central School, will always look back on the fun-filled years that started us on our journey into life. Many footsteps have gone through the halls of this building, leaving many happy memories in our minds. It was a four-year high school until 1956 when Nicholas centralized with Tioga Center. For the next two years this old building was used as an elementary school only. In the fall of 1958, the grade pupils left to move into the new Nichols Elementary School. Tioga Central School and the many people of Nichols who attended this school look into the future with the memory of the past. GRADE 6, MRS. Yet our school is growing rapidly be- cause our community is growing. In this growth our curriculum has expanded as needs or desires arose. Now we have come of age. We are well on our way to attaining goals which, only yesterday, were not dreamed of by our parents and ourselves. And, we are still growing, for only that which grows constantly changes. So, too, we are constantly changing-new courses, new activities, new needed rules and regulations to replace old ones are all in the process of growing. We, who are seniors, leave T.C.S. with this spirit of constantly growing and ex- panding, constantly attaining greater heights which only yesterday seemed im- possible to reach. With this spirit we face a world which, though chaotic, offers opportunities to drive ahead to conquer the problems which now exist, and which now seem impossible to solve. We have been reaching, though per- haps blindly, for our stars. Now we are beginning to see the light, the stars are clearer, the way is shorter, and our enthusiasm is keener. Our theme, Reaching For a Starf' we feel most appropriate at this time in history. Not since the invention of the telescope have we learned so much so quickly about our universe. And all this, we realize, comes at a time when our own planet still baffles us in many ways. The Space Age is the new order, and our stars are now literally just above us waiting only for the final push to be accessible. But we need not enter space to touch our stars. Right here, on this planet called Earth, are many problems we can tackle and hope to aid in their solution. Reaching for a star can be onward as well as upward. i PUBLIC SUPPORT ADVERTISEMENTS 'IVE Kf Av Q Q fs Q Pxtf K 4 N51 'K Jr f'fpn'l7r QQ, m L My fprf-c'v.gm if x , J K' JSE? s , at I AQ WX., 1,'ir4-Y' 3 g, 'A It v,F.a X A5 zu .f Q WT .X 29, L PIU' N T' fr.
