Although the Schythe is rarely dedicated to any individual, the staff felt the historical significance of the Vice President's visit and the natural appreciation accompanying this honor merited his obvious selection. Mr. Vice President, your decision to make Tinley Park the site for one of your first official appearances inspired us. More im- portantly, your determination to come here during' Youth Week showed a personal con- cern for young people in the highest echelons of our government. You may have come to honor the youth of Tinley Park and especially our fine football team, but we feel you did more than that. Your visit to Tinley was a convincing' dis- play of faith in all the youth throughout America. Thanks again for coming, Mr. Vice Presi- dent! Superfly, gonna make your fortune by and by . . . QQWITIES m NE FACES Mrs. Fittanto offers a helping hand to keep the line moving smoothly. 1 10 Can this be for real? Some freshmen appear satisfied with their new schedules. Two new faces attend to the Urigorsi' of registration. Registration was the first big event of the year. With our 200 new students from the Hillcrest area, in addition to the Freshman Class, the word of the week was 'CHAOS., But, that's not all! Classes were closing by the dozen, and students spent the better part of the day arranging and rearranging their schedules , . Having a schedule OK'd on the first try was an unseen thing. Students who during the summer withstood sun stroke, sunburn and heat exhaustion, now withstood writers' cramp and nervous breakdowns. Registration was not all bad though, for many students it was re- warding, good classes, good teachers, and most important, good hours. As registration ended and the students left, only a few crumpled pa- pers and a few forlorn desks marked the beginning of one of the most exciting years for Tinley Park. HOMECOMING The 1973 Court Q1 to rj: Debbie Bicek, Jim Framke, Barb Uthe, Dan Bulow, Denise Ebeling, Charlie Skinulis, Donna Dusik, and Rick Zolner. 1973 Homecoming was a week of involvement for the entire school body, with class distinction days, guy's tug, hall decs, the court assembly, a pa- rade on Saturday, a fantastic victory game, and the climax Saturday evening with the crowning of Barb Uthe. Everyone became involved in the festivities, especially the Junior class with their usual zest, winning the spirit trophy. Total participation by every class provided fun for all. Strength like this is what makes the Titans so powerful! Preparations for a great evening can also be messy' Kathy Lilly and Rik Kristinat, the fairy god- father, contribute their acting ability for the skit. One, two, three . . . kick. 1 1 Queen Candidates Debbie Bicek and Barb Uthe. With the few short weeks that Student Council had to prepare for Homecoming, it ended up a triumphant occasion. Tinley was saluting the 10 year anniversary of its varsity football team. Who could ask for a better day. The sun was shining and the street was lined shoulder to shoul- der with townspeople, high school students, and alumni waiting to cheer the Tinley Park Titans on to victory. Queen Candidates Denise Ebeling and Donna Dusik. Disneyland characters come to Tinley for the 1973 Homecom- ing' festivities. Band float shows Titans' enthusiasm for victory. 12 Sophomore Class depicts fairy tale theme for the parade- watchers' enjoyment. Seniors paint a picture of Crete's defeat which came true with Tinley winning 50 to 6. The steady drizzle outside showed no sign of damp- ening the victory spirit inside at the TPHS homecoming dance. Everyone enjoyed themselves dancing to the mu- sic of Burnt Sienna. The presentation of the king and queen and their court was the highlight of the evening for all the students, faculty, and alumni. Last year's king and queen, Kim Webster and Don Stine, return for an evening of fun with old friends. The 1973 Court ready for a great evening C1 to rj: Donna Dusik, Dan Bulow, Denise Eb- eling, Charlie Skinulis, Debbie Bicek, Jim Framke, Queen Barb Uthe, and King Rick Zolner. A happy queen, Barb Uthe. This happy face reflects the mood of the dance V T W Our winter play, Cactus Flower, opened its two- night stand December 7th. Despite bitterly cold Wea- ther, general disorganization, and a few slight mishaps, the presentation went on with nary a hitch. The hilar- ious two-act comedy, directed by Ms. Deatra Kinney and Yvonne Lucero, delighted the audiences with out- standing performances by Vickie Boersma, Chris Kar- as, Paul Tamminga, and Steve Wiley. MS, Deatra Kinney Chris Karas and Steve Wiley. CAMELOT The fantasy of King Arthur's court and Cam- elot was brought to life on the Tinley stage May 16 and 17. The role of Arthur was portrayed by Rik Kristinat and Guenevere by Betty Cash. W Steve Wiley played the role of the conceited Lancelot, and Joy Fulton added a touch of humor as King Pellinore. One of the many highlights of the show fea- tured Rose Marie Rinaldi as the invisible fairy queen, Morgan Le Fey and the King's illegitimate son, Mordred, played by Dan Krueger. With Ms. Kinney's fine directing and music provided by Mr. Platko and his talented musicians, the cast succeeded in conveying the audience to a land of chivalry, magicians and invisible castles. Betty Cash wonders, . . . where are the simple joys of maidenl1ood? Connie Doodlewerdt creates a new tradition while Rik is up a tree. I wonder what the King is doing tonight! The king catches a peek at his future bride. Pellinore fJoy Fultonj makes a grand en- trance in Camelot. The kings and Lancelot discuss 'Camelot's military situation. f To Steve Wiley Good is, C'eSt I1'10i! Candy Brattstrom and Bill Gallagher, portray Mr. Stricker and Mr. Gunaka. 20 Turnabout was busy for the students at TPHS. Many of the teachers stepped down for the day to be replaced by ambitious students. Even our counselors and administration conceded their offices to the younger generation. The assembly stirred the spirits with a vigorous tug between the Juniors and the Sophomores. The Juniors won an almost instant victory. There was also a wide variety of legs at the assembly for the Crazylegs contest. In all sizes and shapes, four pairs of painted and primped legs paraded across the stage. The Juniors won once again. The Turnabout King candidates and their escorts were presented at the assembly. The candidates were Rod Bothwell, seniorg Duke Woody, junior: Ed Weber, sophornoreg and Barry Lydon, freshman. Barry Lydon was crowned king the following evening at the dance. The music for the crowded dance floor was provided by Ghetto Inspiration. Juniors Margret Farrington, Sue Bicksler, Linda Ebert, and Phyllis Kristinat wait for the gun. Mr. Moriarty crowns Barry Lydon as Joann Dusik carefully poses the new king. It all seemed too astonishing to be true. Yet there on the T.P. H.S. gymnasium stage was the Vice President of the United States telling anecdotes about his family life and presenting individual trophies to members of Tinley Park's championship football team. The whole idea of a Vice Pres- idential visit had started out as a pipe dream by the village trust- ees as part of the community's observance of Youth Week. In fact, Representative Ed Derwin- ski was in Dr. Ted Nelson's of- fice telling him there was only a 10 per cent chance of such an event occurring, when the phone rang: the Vice President's liai- son man relayed Mr. Ford's ac- ceptance to Dr. Nelson. The impact of the visit hit students when they saw the se- cret service ticking off the sec- onds it would take the Vice President to walk down the main corridor to the stage entrance. Special identification tags were issued for the occasion. Although awed by the security precautions and panoply attending the event, the entire community pitched in to make Mr. Ford,s Tinley stop- over a resounding success. At approximately 11:00 a.m. on February 14, Vice President Ford was escorted into the gym, heralded by the fanfare of the Michigan Fight Song. It took at least ten minutes for the waves of applause to stop before the Vice President could begin his speech. A Tinley jersey with the num- ber 48 - Mr. Ford's number while an all-American at Mich- igan - and an autographed football from the team were pre- sented to the Vice President. He seemed completely at ease and delighted with the whole pro- ceedings. That evening students and parents had the treat of seeing themselves filmed and inter- viewed on the major tv net- works. Without meaning to be smug, it can rightfully be said that all the Chicagoland Area and the entire nation also had the opportunity to see the dif- ference a little pride makes. JUN OR SEN UR PROM 'The Sheraton Inn of Joliet provided a ro- mantic atmosphere which made Prom the exciting evening it Was. Nights in White Sa-tin was a perfect theme for the evening with music provided by Heatherly. Ex-prom queen Sue Hallahan was on hand to crown Jo-Ellyn Favia as well as Wish her a happy birthday. Overwhelmed and delighted, Jo-Ellyn Favia is crowned prom queen by Dr. Nelson. Vicki Trayes and her beau keep on smiling Do the locomotion with me. Prom court takes to the dance floor. Jaffer Ali happily accepts his Illinois State Scholarship. Honors Day was a breezy ceremony the Monday before graduation where seniors ap- peared before the student body in caps and gowns. Below the caps and gowns were cut- offs and T-shirts-the order of the day. The Key of Knowledge is handed down from Curt Zubaty to Joann Schuman and Jodi Curlee. Brad Bose is awarded the Chef's cap by Mr Sgariglia for his culinary talents. l l Paul Tamminga is justifiably pleased after receiving the top science award, Honors were also bestowed upon senior editors of the yearbook staff. GRADUATIO 1974 Graduation for the Class of '74 was an experience they will not soon forget. Most commencement exercises are dignified and proper occasions, but this class had to be different. With some help from the weather, the power failed and graduation took place in the dark. The lack of a P.A. system was not anything to get excited aboutg Mr. Moriarty simply stood at the edge of the stage and belted out the graduates' names to the audience. Simply marching out of the auditorium to Pomp and Circumstancen would have disappointed the audience so at the appointed moment hats, minus the tassles, flew towards the ceiling heralding the end of a unique ceremony and the beginning of many new experiences for the 266 high school graduates. Rick Bailey has his tassle changed to the left side by Dr. Nelson after he received his diploma. The graduates wait patiently after twelve years of homework, books, tests, term papers .... Friends and relatives look on. K District 228 Board Member Mr. Smith presented each class member with a smile, a diploma, and a handshake. Smiles show it's great to be a grad. 1 UMNMTUNS , 33 T.P.H.S. BAND Mary Lang knows that practice makes perfect. . E CF S. Top row fl to rj: T. Borta, C. Maly, L. Hraha, C. Stewart, S. Schotts, J. It started with two practices a day in August and three weeks later you're ready. The giants from T.F. South visit us, and even though the scoreboard said 8-0, you don't feel like you won. The next week you play dead for 47 minutes before escaping with a 7-3 decision against Rich East. Conference foe Kankakee Westview is rolled over 42-0. On Bradley's muddy field you win 14-0. For home- coming it's a lot of fun beating Crete-Monee 50-6. Rodriguez and Lincolnway go down 22-7 and Rich South falls 48-6. Then the South Central Super Bowl against unbeaten archrival Oak Forest, the school with the TP burned in the middle of their field. The rain didn't keep many from missing this game. And as you stand in the hallway waiting for -the game to start, you're a little wet and nervous. But once you run onto that field, and you see all the banners and the stands full of people and they start to play the school song, you get a great feeling inside. Titans 30, Bengals 0. No offense to Catholics, but Tinley Park is a mudder superior. We finish Kankakee Eastridge under the lights 46-8. The play- offs against Rich Central, the only team the seniors have ever lost to. Revenge is sweet, to the tune of 21-13. And in between the games there were newspaper and television coverage, and after they were over there were the banquets, and then the Vice-Presidentls visit. There's lots of memoiies to such a season. Just don't forget 'em.
