This showing was unexpected because there were only thirteen varsity runners. An outstanding figure this year was Terry Cali- ban. Not only did he place fifth in the pole vault at the district meet, he set a new school record of 12 feet-8 inches. Terry was also part of the fifth place mile relay team at districts, which narrowly missed qualify- ing for the state finals. Other members of the relay team were Dave Krause, Curt Zu- baty, and Dan Bulow. Other standouts were Tom Matthews, rated as one of the top hur- dlers in the area, Bruce Boughton, Tinley's foremost distance runner, Bill Burgee and Wayne Bernas, both top-notch at the 220 meter. standing form which enabled him to take conference places in the high , jump, low hurdles, and high hurdles. The 1973 Titan baseball team had a successful season, finishing with a record of 15 wins and ten losses with one tie. With a few breaks the Titans could have finished much better, losing many games by one run. Ed Neal once again was the leading hitter on the team with an average of .438. He was the only unanimous choice for all-conference. Other all-conference selections include catcher Darrell Kimzey, and second team pitcher, John Beachum. Taking special mention honors were John Van Dyke and Steve Bettenhausen for the outfield, second base- man Jaffer Ali, all juniors, and senior pitcher John O'Connell. The conference record was 7-6, good for fourth place after being predicted seventh. The graduat- ing seniors were Bill Norborg, Ed llllarcotte, Jim Phelan, Darrell Kimzey, Glen Jensen, John Beachum, John O'Connell, and Ed Neal. The Titans are left with a fine nucleus of juniors: Jaffer Ali, Mike Pilachowski, Charlie Skinulis, Steve Bettenhausen, Jim Framke, John Van Dyke, and two promising pitchers, Bob Bogusz and Ed Murphy. 1 t t . - T t ff' , A M Q ,. - -ws, ' V .. ,vf,,' We 5,T,ff21'9'fe.,,'f' .1 -42 ' 'f -,wa-as , 4 --1.4.-fe. .-Et, gyms: 1' by J . , ,,..,,,, N ., , , ,.,., . ..,., ., ,M 5 E ,gt ,ir iw in may ff 3+ laEf1tv swmiw, ' '. .
