Besides seeking a winning record for the 1972 girls' tennis season, the titans had a new trophy to seek as Illinois hosted its first girls' state ten- nis tournament. The season had its ups and downs but ended on a happy note as the titans went into their last match against Kankakee Eastridge with a 5 won-5 lost record. Victory was sweet over the Kankakee team, long respected for its tennis skill, so the team ended season play with a winning record. A young team labeled junior varsity was started this year. They didn't finish with an outstanding record but the experience they gained competing against other varsity teams will certainly help the team of the future. The varsity went into the state tournament play- ing districts at Richards High School. The girls 5? Thor 411-im.. sg is i2 Kan kf . . And they're off!!! Junior Bruce Boughton returns home after Despite its discouraging record of no wins, the cross country team showed great school spirit. Even though they lacked experience and depth, there was always plen- ty of enthusiasm. Coach Farley is looking forward to an improved position in the conference standings next year and the return of some of this year's standouts should insure this. However, with a record of 5-19 the average point spread between the Titans and their opponents wasjust 5 points. Coach Gordon Rogers, in his ninth year as head coach, fielded his usual well-disciplined, superbly drilled squad. The season was eventful in that the Titans experienced an almost unheard of five overtimes against Morris in February and broke all of the recovery records for the team. Individual highlights included John Beachum, who lead the team in assists and was elected Honorary Team Captain. Terry Shannon, who was the leading scorer and was elected the MVP of the Titans, also proved a great help to the team. Terry was also elected to the SESC all-con- ference team. A well-balanced team effort saw six Titans scoring 100 or more points and ten players earning varsity letters.
