All seniors in Utah high schools are eligible to participate in the annual Sterling Scholar competi- tion. Its purpose is to recognize seniors for their scholastic excel- lence. Each school may send one nominee to state in each of the twelve areas. Every nominee re- ceives a certificate, each finalist receives a sterling silver pin, each runner-up receives a $100 cash award, and each winner receives a cash award of $250. The major col- leges and universities in Utah offer tuition and or scholarships to winners or runners-up or both. Timpview also chose alternates this year. ISOYS ANO OlltliS STATI Boys' and Girls' State consists of a group of boys and a group of girls who learned about our government. Last summer we had several partici- pants from Timpview who were se- lected carefully by a panel of judges. The students were organized into cities and campaigned and held elec- tions for city and a state positions. Greg Peters won the honor of pre- siding as governor at Boys State. Be- sides being a great learning experi- ence, it was alot of fun. Girls' State Left to right: Kelly Arnold, Becky Price.
