All seniors in Utah high schools are eligible to participate in the annual Sterling Scholar competi- tion. Its purpose is to recognize seniors for their scholastic excel- lence. Each school may send one nominee to state in each of the twelve areas. Every nominee re- ceives a certificate, each finalist receives a sterling silver pin, each runner-up receives a $100 cash award, and each winner receives a cash award of $250. The major col- leges and universities in Utah offer tuition and or scholarships to winners or runners-up or both. Timpview also chose alternates this year.
