Editor Konda Lyons Advisor Linda Peterson Between the rays of the soft morning sun appearing over Mount Timpanogos, the legend of the Thunderbird was born. Not only was this the dawn of a new day, but it was also the dawn of a new beginning for the Thunderbird. The eyes of this majestic T-bird flashed lightning, and the beating of its wings pro- duced the rolling of thunder. It soared through the orange sky and came to rest at Timpview High School, which lay at the base of Mount Timpanogos. ...A Proiiil THIINIItiltltmi 2 3 Learns Tliroiujli 5 6 Horizons It Encounters . . . n The Thunderbird strives for truth and understanding in each mo- ment of every day. Its flight takes it beyond the bounds of known horizons to a place undiscovered and new where the Thunderhird is free to learn more about itself and the world around it. With no one to come home to Timpview this year, we held Home- steading. This was a very exciting week, with activities such as sign- ing your name on a quilt, calf roping, and cleaning up plots of land around the school. We won the first football game ever to be played on our field by a score of 14-6. During half time, Karen Jones, Gaye Crawley and Debbie Dixon were announced as Home- steading Royalty. The week ended with a dance held in the student commons. The theme Break Away From Yesterday was appropriate in helping us realize our own po- tential as a new school. 14 The first year at Timpview High got off to a good start. Student govern- ment members were busy leading everyone on tours through the school during orientation and plan- ning New Year's Week. They went to each homeroom singing, blowing horns, and passing out suckers. The New Year's Assembly and the T- Bird Bash were held in the lunch- room. Part way through the dance, the cheerleaders taught the fight song to everyone in the gym. We're proud of our officers, cheerleaders and flagtwirlers for helping create so much enthusiasm in our school. 17 Harvest Ball Preferred By Everyone 18 ■ Do you think he'd go with me? 'But I don't even know her!' 'I could take my dad's truck.’ 'Thanks, I had a great time.' The theme for the Harvest Ball, which was held on October 14, was “Candle In The Wind. The Girls' Organization, under the direction of Carrie Stubbs, president, spon- sored the dance. Dave Dunkley was chosen A Man For All Sea- sons, with Paul McOmber and Brett Wood, Best Men. They danced with their dates in the com- mons to the song Candle in the Wind, played by London Bridge. Decorations included a silhouette of a girl blowing out a candle against a dusty rose background, drawn by Andrea Darais. Refresh- ments were served on candle-lit tables. 19 PUP IS EVERTME I J The theme of Thunder Week, the week that Timpview played Provo High in basketball, was Timp is Everywhere! Signs and posters were displayed. This sign, made by the School Spirit Committee, was displayed downtown over University Avenue. Special Weeks Got Students Involved The first week of school was New Years Week. The Timpview Toddlers, Todd Ashman, Tod Balser, Mike Bateman, Dave Dunkley, and Lon Allen, sang and danced their way into the hearts of their audience. John Gibbons, the director of the johnny Carson Show, looked down with disgust while Princess Timpanogos and her Indians took over his show. During Math and Science Week, Larry Smith played twelve different chess games at once. The first week of 1978 was Student Government Week. Stu- dents were involved in a contest to see who could match Stu- dent Government leaders with their baby pictures. During Student Government Week, an election was held for Baby New Year, a freshman, and Father Time, a senior Rill jeffs and Dave Dunkley were elected by the Student Body. 21 I I I The Senior Dinner-Dance was held in May at Hotel Utah with Provo High. JIINIOK ACTIVITIES Lawrence Elk and his champagne music. The Lennon Sisters enjoyed singing Chip- munks' Christmas Carols in A'Cappella dresses. Each class from Senior to Freshman was given a week of their own this year and a chance to put on an assembly. The Sophomore Assem- bly, Lawrence Elk's Christmas Special, was the first, put on in December. Closely following it was the Senior Assembly in Jan- uary, and then the Freshman As- sembly, As Timpview Turns. Only Freshmen were allowed to see the Freshman Assembly, while all were invited to the others. The class officers with the help of their supporting classes worked hard to make their assemblies enjoyable. The Junior Assembly was held in April with the Junior Prom. The theme was Knights in White Satin, and there the Junior Prom Royalty was announced. Juniors sold magazines to raise money for the Prom which was a big success. To conclude Girls' Week, the Girls' Day Dance was held on March 4, at the Village on Center, where the boys won the Battle of the Sexes which had been going on all week. The atmosphere at the dance went along with the theme of Just Like Yesterday, and pictures were taken in Bullock and Losee's old million dollar cars. The Girls' Or- ganization put many hours of plan- ning into these activities, hoping to bring Timpview girls closer to- gether in spirit and in friendship. 27 Hypnotized Scott Yaeger told about his experiences with a monster in a haunted house. Timpview Has An Olde Fashioned Christmas An Olde Fashioned Christmas was the theme of Timpview's Christmas dance, which was spon- sored by the Omega Club. It was held on December 17, 1977, in the Student Commons, and the music was provided by London Bridge. The first Forensic team chose The First and Finest as it's motto for the year. Coming to Timpview with forensic roots deep in the proud tradition of excellence developed at Provo, and with the National Coach of the Year, the new team quickly established a national repu- tation of its own. Timpview dehate teams represented Utah at major national tournaments across the country. Timpview won honors during the summer and the school year at Georgetown, Loyola, Ffar- vard, Marquette, USC, UCLA, and U.C. Berkley. These honors and the' awards won in Utah indeed made Timpview's debate year an example of the First and Finest. 61 P.E. weightlifting credit was not given for debate, and some wished Timpview files were smaller. Sue Peterson, Donna Black, and Tracy Ashman added a feminine touch to the debate team. Debate partners were matched to compliment each other. Practice makes perfect. Brett Butler, Craig Hughes, Murray Blake, and Garry Moon practiced alot. 62 Roger Moore, National Coach of the Year, in action. WHAT IS DEBATE REALLY LIKE? We have two responses and an underview. I. DEBATE IS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE Subpoint A. Learning to act humble after verbally crushing an opponent. Subpoint B. Learning how to make up for your partner's blunders. Subpoint C. Learning how to succeed in spite of your coach. II. DEBATE IS A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE WITH OPPORTUNITIES EOR Subpoint A. Staying in some of the nation's most luxurious Motel 6's. Subpoint B. Dining in the elegant atmos- phere of McDonald's, Burger King and Sambo's. Subpoint C. Playing Erisbee coast to coast. An Underview: Debate is more than cutting cards, gluing evidence, filing, researching, refiling, flow- ing, and developing arguments; it is know- ing that winning isn't everything when you lose, but it's the only thing when you win. Hard work carried debaters coast to coast in search of forensics honors. 63 Front row left to right: Alayne Eggertsen, Lisa Reundy, Lori Huntington, Jodi Cloward, Jean Gabbitas, Laura Whipple, Jennifer Fngland Row two' Susan Gabbitas, Kelly Corbridge, Robyn Overlade, Shellie Cox, Stacy Ash, Paula Gale, Tammy Mitchel , Cindy Quinn Row three TracyMat,ex, Teresa Tucker, Grace Gull, Cindy Ross, Jill Witbeck, Teresa Best, Ann Peterson Debbie Dixon, Jeanna Billings, Shelly Jackman. The Shandells provided not only great half-time entertainment, but also a good majority of the spirit at our games. I l!ll.l TEAM Before the drill team even had a name, their officers were elected. To choose a name, each member suggested one, then voted. Shan- dells, suggested by Shelley Jack- man, is an Indian word meaning the best. The Shandells, under the direction of Rolayne Sims, marched at every home football and basketball game and were little sisters to the football and basketball players. They had fund- raisers to help pay for their uni- forms and they marched at half time at a BYU basketball game on December 9. We're proud of all the work they put forth in support- ing our teams and the enthusiasm they created. Dance Mistress. The unanimous opinion of the team was that Coach Barry Olsen bo- geyed through a successful first year with a Thunderbird mascot who wanted to eagle. Timp's coach was Coach Dean and the assistant coach was Coach Blake Jenson. The three co-captains included Ed Bowers as co-captain of the fullbacks, Mark Reveal as co-captain of the halfbacks, and Robert Parker as co-captain of the forwards. Timp's most difficult opposing team in the region this year was Orem. 177 Timpview's first tennis team was coached by Don Chamberlain. They were excited to have the new Timpview Tennis courts to play on and worked for a successful year. 176 179 BASEBALL The baseball team was coached by Reid Hales and their games were played at Timp Park. Around 60 boys tried out and the cuts were made in late March. The team looked forward to a successful season. 180 Booster Club Officers Booster Club Officers left to right: Ron Baird, secretary; Lester Downing, second vice president; Tom Giles, first vice president; Ken Balser, president; missing: Lyman Sperry, treasurer 181 182 State Champions This year's Girl's Tennis Team had an ex- cellent record. Coach Chamberlain reported that at region the girls got four of the five first places and were region champs. At state, they got first in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd singles; third in 1st doubles; and fourth in 2nd doubles before taking state. Twenty-four schools competed, and Timpview got 13 points, which was seven higher than the 2nd highest score. Because only three girls on the team were seniors, Timpview should have a strong team in years to come. Michelle Galli concentrated on hitting the ball. The ball was just a blurrr! The Thunderbird team welcomed a time out. Timpview girls were ready for the ball. 3| Colleen Hawkins returned the ball to the opponents. The Girl's Volleyball Team chose a most valuable player for each game. Laurie Bown was the MVP the majority of times. The team, coached by Miss Fishier, had Elaine Monson chosen for the all-region team. 183 Swimmers Go To State The six a.m. practice sessions for the Timpview Girl's Swim Team paid off in the form of a very suc- cessful season. The team, coached by Miss Ercanbrack, sent twelve girls to the state meet where they took fifth in the competition. Ca- mille Kartchner broke two state records and Cindy Griggs took third in diving. First row, left to right: Miss Ercanbrack, Barbara Barnes, Melanie Denning, Cindy Griggs, Anneli Rowberry, Susan Robinson, Sue Miles,Lori Powell. Outstanding senior players were Vickie Fullmer and Judy Craig. The team played a good season and is expected to be strong in years to come. Promising players for next year are Elaine Monson, Barbara Belnap, Jennifer Rice, Michele Bateman, Colleen Hawkins, and Melanie Denning. 185 Top row: Diana Lee, Rene Robinson, Becky Taylor, Tracy Duke. Second row: Melita Robins, Stacy Kimball, Breta Walker, Laurie Molten, Karen Farnsworth, Joyce Rupper. Front row: Stacy Clark, Sharon Hopkinson, Cindy Sharon, Lynne Smith, Della Elvin. Cindy Sherran and Becky Taylor were two out- standing gymnasts. I u Katy Olivira was a strong discus thrower for our team this year. Timpview's track team competed in ten track meets and then hosted the men and women's Regional Track Meet for state. The team began training very early in the season for an average of three hours a day before specializing in one or more of the 13 areas of competition. Because much of the team is made up of Freshmen and Sophomore boys and girls, we also have good potential for future years. Tammy Kadjan competed in hurdles this track season. Hard training helped Shirley Oaks and Fawna Johnson in competition. 187 The stately Thunderbird rises above difficulties and soars through the sky. With an open mind and a de- sire to achieve, nothing will stand in the way of success. While at peace with ourselves and our fel- lowmen, no goal is beyond our reach because a Thunderbird was born to soar. SOAKING All seniors in Utah high schools are eligible to participate in the annual Sterling Scholar competi- tion. Its purpose is to recognize seniors for their scholastic excel- lence. Each school may send one nominee to state in each of the twelve areas. Every nominee re- ceives a certificate, each finalist receives a sterling silver pin, each runner-up receives a $100 cash award, and each winner receives a cash award of $250. The major col- leges and universities in Utah offer tuition and or scholarships to winners or runners-up or both. Timpview also chose alternates this year. Dave set a new state record in the 100-yard breast stroke, and entered many national swim meets. 194 Todd Ashman and Mike Jensen. John Ashworth, Greg Peters, David Stewart, and Brett Gunnell. Laurie Bown and Elaine Monson were on the girl's volleyball team. Elaine was team captain, and both girls were voted Most Valuable Player on the team. In tennis, Judy Craig won first place in region doubles and third in state doubles. Linley Tanner was seeded second in the intermountain area and 43rd in the nation. Co-cap- tain of the basketball team was Vicki Fullmer. Because two of Timpview's Forensic teams won numerous tournaments in Utah and California; John Ashworth and Greg Peters were invited to the Bicentennial Debates in Philidelphia, and were one of twelve teams invited to the George- town Round Robin in Washington D.C. David Stewart and Brett Gunnell were invited to the Harvard Round Robin out of 11 debate teams in the country, and attended the Marquette Debate Superbowl in Wisconsin. Laurie Bown, Judy Craig, Linley Tanner, Elaine Monson, and Vickie Fullmer. 195 David Lundberg. Camille Kartchner. Time continued to pass, and the goodbyes were said as the doors closed on another school year. Although the seniors may never pass this way again, many leaders remained to carry on the traditions established this year, and the legend had begun. The legend of the Thunderbird will live on and on, and will grow with each class as they go through these high school years. The sun has set today, only to rise again on new faces, new experi- ences, and new challenges tomor- row.
