We hope that, in years to come, as you turn through the pages of this, the 1956 edition of The Purple and Gold, you will relive in memory your days at T.H.S. We then shall have accomplished our purpose. Contents ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS ADVERTISEMENTS To Mrs. Lillian S. Wade, we,the students of Timmonsville High School, proudly dedicate this, the 1956 edition of The Purple and Gold. This dedication can express but a small part of our appreciation for all that she has done for us. As classroom teacher, Latin Club sponsor, and Junior and Senior Class sponsor, she has worked un- selfishly for the betterment of our school and of each member of the student body. Mrs. Wade has through the years been more than a teacher; she has been a thoughtful advisor and an understanding friend, never too tired or too busy to give us an encouraging word or lend us a helping hand. She has indeed set us an example by which we can pattern our lives. dedication Mr. Sam T. Hensley Mr. J.R. Mellette Hoard Of Sducation ' Vice Chairman Mr. James Donohoe Chairman Dr. H.C. On com- mencement night I promised that every twenty-five years I would print such a volume, telling the doings and whereabouts of my old graduate friends, and senda copy to each of my former classmates. A quick glance through it tells me that: John Jordanhas risen to president of the Ford Rocket Company on Mercury. George Redick, textile manufacturer on Pluto, is making cloth from old dog hairs. George has hired Loretta Parnell, professional model, to advertise his flea-bitten bathrobes. Lorraine Lee is president of the Lonely Hearts' Club, of which Fanny Alexander and Deane Anderson are twenty-year members. Jewel Dozier and Glenda Anderson, famous actresses, are playing Mutt and Jeff on Broadway. Robert Workman, well-known cattleman from Mars, has re- leased his new book, 101 Different Ways To Milk a Martian Cow. Letider Pierce and Rachel Jones, close high school friends, are opposing each other for the Ladies' Wrestling Championship of the Universe. Butch Moore, rich rocket racer, has won the Saturn 500 in his souped-up Nash Ramble r. He was presented a trophy by Wilkes Dorriety, raceway owner, and given the winner's kiss by Miriam Humphrey, Miss Saturn 500 of 1981. Warren Anderson, rich playboy, will open a Drive-In on the dark side of the moon, where he can have a show every hour. His first movie will be The Quiet Lady, starring Mary Sue Hill. Cold-natured Louise Atkinson, famous pianist, is giving a charity recital for the polar bears in Alaska. Watson Timmons, rich oil tycoon, who owns the Royal Crown Hair Oil Company, has hired b a 1 dh e a d e d Sybil Copeland, scalp specialist, to sample his products. David Baroody, outstanding sculptor, is still trying to change the face of the man in the moon to a Burma Shave advertisement. Chan Weaver has won the $64,000 question, but Donnie Middle- ton failed to answer the jackpot question and won an old 1981 Cadil- lac. Don Young , baseball star of the Saturn Senators, has struck out in his attempt to marry Sherrill Jordan, wealthy heiress of a thriving hot dog business on Pluto. Joseph Hicks, president of the Pepsi-Cola Company, seems to be her choice. Heidi Yarborough is queen of Venus, with Rebecca Hill as her first lady. Oddly enough, Harriet Jordan is her court jester. Patricia Watford is a professional water skier on Neptune. Pulling her about is Alan Hobbs in his atomic-powered speed boat. June and Judy Parnell have just released their new space hit, Ghost Rockets in the Sky. Thier rich song writer is Sabra Strother. Billy McGee, famous scientist, has invented an acid that will dissolve anything. Now he's looking for something to keep it in. Thad White and Steve Rut le dg e , rocketeers from the space patrol, have arrested their old classmate Reggie Langston, for overloading his rocket. He had General of the National Guard,Mur- doch Lind,as one of his passengers. Mary Gibbs, space suit designer from Venus, is making suits to show off the figure of Joanne Jordan, Miss Solar System of 1981. Martha Howell and Doris Dairty have made a cool million operating a golf course on the spacious planet Jupiter. Cecelia Hill and Louis Sansbury, universally-known duet, are touring the planet, Cecelia playing her trumpet and Louis singing the space hits. Grover Campbell and Ellen Truluck are now married and have 421 children. They own the Inter-Space Orphanage on Mars. Annie Ruth and Joyce Driggers achieved fame by becoming the first women to cross the Milky Way in a flying saucer. Here in a nutshell are the occupations and lives of my forty-nine school-mates. In each person's case his life adds up to one tiling- success. I am proud to say that I was a member of that crazy and wonderful class -- that great class of '56. Class History We, the class of 1956, shall always remember the years of 1952-56 with a smile on our faces and many fond memories in our hearts. During these years our minds have been filled with know- ledge and our lives with much happiness. It seems only yesterday that forty-five happy ninth grade students received their first taste of high school life. We elected as our president Carroll Player, who led us safely through the trials and tribulations of our freshman year. He was assisted by Lorraine Morris, vice-president; Harriet Jordan, secretary; David Baroody, treasurer; and Louise Atkinson, representative on the student council. The year 1954 found us no longer frightened freshmen, but sophisticated sophomores who wonderedmore and more how Tim- monsville High had m a na g e d before we came along. We chose Carroll Player as our president, Lorraine Lee vice-president, Harriet Jordan secretary, Chan Weaver treasurer, and Lorraine Morris representative on the student council. Before we realized what had happened, we were in the midst of our junior year. George Redick was elected president; Steve Rutledge, vice-president; John Jordan, secretary; Louise Atkinson, treasurer; and Glenda Anderson, representative on the student council. Under the guidance of our sponsors, Mrs. J.E. Donohoe, Mrs. C. V. Brown, and Mrs. Dathan Baxley, we successfully pre- sented The Boarding House Reach, a three-act comedy. Then, using as our theme Stardust, we entertained the seniors with a reception-dance at the Florence Country Club. At last came the year we all had so long awaited, tht year that we became dignified seniors. We elected Loretta Parnell president, Robert Workman vice-president, Lorraine Lee secre- tary, June Parnell treasurer, and Cecelia Hill representative on the student council. This, our last year of high school, held much for us. With the assistance of our sponsors, Mrs. Lillian Wade and Mrs. Gertrude Williamson, we successfully presented another play. We attended another Junior-Senior reception, this time as guests. Then came that wonde rful trip to Washington and New York which we had planned since the ninth grade. We shall always remember it. Suddenly, with a tinge of sadness, we realize our high school days are almost over. Yes, soon we shall graduate, but we know we shall never forget four of the most wonderful years of our lives -- the years spent in our alma mater, Timmonsville High School. junior OFFICERS President Ramsey Mellette Vice-President Cale Yarborough Secretary Susan Hawkins Treasurer Jonnie Mae Young Class Hill, Linda Kea, Alex Kelly, Hattie Jean Kennedy, Philip Kirven, Roger Lawrence, Berwyn Locklair, Bobby Locklair, Della Logan, Lois Mathis, Emily McGee, David Mellette, Ramsey, Jr. Morris, Lorraine Pierce, Marilyn Powers, Alton Sansbury, Mildred Severance, Charles Spring, Claude Strother, Mary Tedder, Roger Ulrich, Benny White, Marion Yarborough, Cale Young, Bill Young, Jonnie Mae Sophomore OFFICERS President..........Sue Raines Vice-President . .
