They have ever been cooperative, outstanding, fun-loving, and devoted to their vocations. In 1942, as freshmen, they began their vocational careers, becoming more and more active as the months and years passed, each student contributed his talents and energies to better teams, better plays, better revues, and a happier class spirit. Jalan Neztek, Timken's All- City and All-County halfback, is brought down by an un- identified Lincoln player after a gain of three yards. Timken's fortunes on the gridiron in 1945 continued on the trend upward. The Trojans recovered from a slow start in which they lost three consecutive games, to finish the season with a record of five wins and an equal number of defeats. V- Coach Russell Bud Jones resumed in mid-season his pre-war position as head coach, succeeding E. Earl Loucks. Jones' return was a success, as the Trojans registered a victory over Mansfield 15-7, and nearly upset the unbeaten Lincoln Lions when they held them to a 7-6 score. Besides their triumph over Mansfield, the Trojans were victorious in games with Uhrichsville, Wooster, Akron West, and Alliance. The other four defeats came at the hands of McKinley, Youngstown Ursuline, Youngstown Rayen, and Lehman. johnny Neztek, fleet-footed half- back, and tackle Frank Lippka were hon- ored for their fine play throughout the season by earning first team berths on the WHBC All-City and All-County elevens. faa! It took jim Cloud three years of hard work and dil- igent practice to attain the coveted goal of playing varsity football. Cloud, who hailed from West North Grade School, won a starting job at tackle and turned in commendable performances. Bill Ercbliman could always be depended upon to serve as a capable replacement when the going got tough. When sent into a game, he performed flaw- lessly and played his end position with ease. Eschli- man attended Cedar Grade School. Page 74 john Neztek developed into one of the best backs ever turned out at Timken. On two occasions he tallied three touchdowns. Neztek, who came from Burns, was placed on the WHBC All-County and All-City first teams. Memorial Kala icier, an ade t la er at either the 8 P P Y uarterback or halfback sitions, en ineered the q P0 8 Trojans to five victories as against an equal number of defeats. Memorial finished second among the Tim- ken scorers for the year with 24 points. Kalagides won three varsity letters. Former Head Football Coach, E. Earl Lozfckr, time- keeper George Swimiell, and former school board member, john F. Pearl discuss the whys and wherefores of the game of basketball at halftime of the South game. Considered a trifle small for holding down the dif- ficult pivot position, Bob Tomfho came through with flying colors. He won three T's , two as regular center. The slim l50 pound Tomsho attended Horace Mann and Baxter Grade Schools. Although they failed to win a single game from city opposition, the Trojans held their own against the three powerful Canton combines, Lehman, Lincoln, and Mc- Kinley. McKinley started with a rush and held a 7-O lead after two minutes of play. That lone touchdown was the only marker scored in the first three quarters and one Timken touchdown might have changed the complexion of the game. However, the Bulldogs cashed the breaks and tallied two more touchdowns to win Zl-O. Lehman spanked the locals 32-7 but the score hardly tells the story. The Polar Bears were keyed up for the battle and as a result turned in their best exhibition of the year. The brightest star in Timken's record of achievements came when the Trojans nearly spoiled Lincoln's spotless record by holding them to a 7-6 victory. Timken was the only team that could boast of ever holding a lead over the Lions when they held a 6-0 advantage in the first quarter. The Trojans threatened twice more but couldn't muster enough punch to score. Frank Lippktir outstanding play throughout the sea- son earned him an honorable mention on the All- Ohio football squad. A former Clarendon Grade School student, Lippka was also placed on the WHBC All-County and All-City teams. Risaliti was discharged from the Army in August 1945 and came back to Timken Where he had served as assistant coach in both basketball and football for the 1941-42 season. His job was no cinch as he was met by green teams in both basketball and football. However, both outfits posted commendable records. Page 77 Page 78 Playing without a single returning letterman from the 1944-45 squad, the Trojans concluded the 45-46 basketball season with nine triumphs in twenty engagements. Timken's seven year cage record now stands at 116 victories in 146 games. Kenneth P. Kate, a Wooster College graduate and reserve mentor at Tim- ken for two years, assumed the head coaching duties the third game of the season, succeeding Dan P. Myers. With five juniors, two seniors, and three sophomores carrying the burden, the Trojans showed to advantage in games with foes who held an all-around edge in experience and fundamentals. In county competition Timken recorded three victories and absorbed five defeats. Lincoln and Massillon were the Trojans' victims, while Lehman, Mc- Kinley, Alliance, and Canton Township registered wins over the Vocationalists. Youngstown Ursuline fashioned a 41-31 upset victory over the Trojans in the first round of the sectional tournament at Youngstown. Charles Neago's stellar play throughout the season earned him second team positions on both A11-City and All-County. The ever-alert Jack Hal- kider tallied 187 points to give him school scoring honors for the season. He recorded 18 or more points on four occasions, including 21 in the Delaware game. A senior, Bob Logan, was a valuable asset to the team as a steadying influence on his younger teammates. He won several starting assign- 'ments for his dependable work. lack Niet0'J sparkling play on the Reserve Team merited him an opportunity to prove his Wares on the varsity. He made good his chance and soon became Coach Kate's Sixth man. Manager Bob Berkebileit numerous tasks, such as issu- ing equipment to players, filling balls, and other small, but important jobs, made him the team's most valuable man. Shaking off a bad start, Charlet Neago rapidly de- veloped into an accomplished player and was well rewarded with his selection to second team berths on both All- County and All-City. vm P X H ' - Page 79 One of the most improved players on the Reserve Team where he sank 77 points, George Nnwrozidef received valuable experience by par- ticipating in several Varsity frays during the season. A big, rugged boy, Bob Fortion. saw little action dur- ing the season due to a knee injury. However, next year he will be striving to earn him- self a position on the Varsity. lame: Koufax, a wide- awake defensive player and a fine passer, was always cool when the pressure was on. He should develop into a top- flight player next year. Although he lacked an inch of hitting the six foot mark, Ronald Van Horn was a Constant bulwark around the backboards, providing plenty of scrap for much taller opponents. Ray Van: saw occasional action during the season and should be in the thick of the fight for a starting berth next year. He caged 84 points in Reserve games. Operating from the guard position, Ronald Slmckle turned in a commendable performance each game. He usually sparked the team's defensive play and set up many baskets with his clever passes. By the time next season rolls around, Victor Polosky should be well over the six foot mark and fully developed. He tallied 88 points for the Reserves and saw some varsity service. Bob Bozvertox, a senior, was a first line replacement for the majority of the year. However, his improved play toward the end of the season earned him a starting position. Often on short notice our orchestra, under the capable direction of Cecil Armitage, has come through with appropriate selections for special occasions. Hard and long hours do not bother these ambitious musicians, as many of the students are also mem- bers of Civic music organizations. The 1946 orchestra, with its accurate timing, has always supported the choruses and soloists on stage, for a competent orchestra in the pit gives a feeling of security to the performers. The headquarters of the G. A. Club is located in Washington, D. C., from where notices came as to developments in printing and data about contests into which club members can and do enter. The Graphic Arts Club has won fame for Tirnken by winning three silver cup awards in four years. The club, sponsored by Mr. Lyle and Mr. Madzay, is a self-governing group within itself. This year's officers are Glenn Zandt, president, Bill Wadsworth, vice-presidentg Don Reed, secretary, and Bob Logan, treasurer. The club has its basketball and baseball teams. Money for parties and outings is furnished by the collection of dues. Since practically all the members, who have gradu-' ated, are in the armed forces, letters from these former students are enjoyed by the Graphic Arts Club.
