CAPTAIN N. M. HEAD USN We have attempted to assemble here some pictorial re- minders of a period in the life of our ship - a task made more necessary now that we know she will soon join the Re- serve Fleet and that her crew will leave her for other ships and other stations. ' OUR SKIPPER, She's had a good life, this ship of ours, although it has been at times a rough one. In the period we cover she has roamed the Spanish Main as did the Spanish galleons and the buccaneers of old, been pounded by the seas through which the Norsemen sailed, savored the blue waters of the Mediterra- nean, and been mercilessly attacked by the tropical downpours of Panama. She has wet-nursed seaplanes from Iceland to the Shet- lands, from the Gold Coast of Panama to the Antilles, has flown the Flag of the Deputy Commander of Allied Forces in the Mediterranean - and has taken her crew to such varied places of interest as Edinburgh and Malta, Norfolk and Coco Solo, Cannes and the Virgin Islands. pg Her decks have felt the tread of an English Lord and the march of Navy Yard workmen - and have rung to the hurry- ing feet of United States sailors, the men who have kept her ready for any duties assigned to her. A ship -any ship- is an inanimate thing - brought alive by the people on her. Herein you will see our ship as she has lived for a part of her history. Perhaps' this will help us to remember her as she lies waiting her call, should the need arise, to come alive again under the hands and care of another generation of defenders of her country. I hope, sincerely, that they prove to be as fine and will care, for her as well as those whom you see herein - with whom it has been such a pleas- ure and an honor for me and my predecessors to serve. N. M. HEAD, CAPT, USN COMMANDING OFFICER
