1 With the crack of shattering glass, the cheers of workers and the strains of martial music, the U.S.S. TIMBALIER slid slowly into the cool waters of Lake Washington. The occasion was the launching of a new seaplane tender of the AVP class, named after Timbalier Bay on Louisiana's Gulf Coast. The date was April 13, 19435 the place the Lake Washington ship- yard at Houghton, Washington. The TIMBALIER, however, was doomed to sit out the rest of the war at a pier in Lake' Washington and not until over three years later, May 14,1946, was she given a crew, commissioned, and sent on a Shakedown cruise between' San Francisco and San Diego. Then through the Canal to the east coast and into the Caribbean where so many knots have since been logged. Cn a stormy February 25, in 1951, the TIMBALIER, in answer to an S.O.S. rushed to a spot 75 miles south-west of Bermuda where the Bermudian motor-vessel JADE had sprung a leak, and was floundering and sinking in the pound- ing seas. With some fast work the entire nine man crew was picked out of- the water and off the JADE's', cracking decks by the men of the TIMBALIER. Then TIMBALIER guns were trained on her and the JADE was sunk to keep her from becoming a navigational hazard. The crew of the JADE presented a plaque of silver inscribed A Token of Gratitude for the Gallantry Displayed by Officers and Crew of the U.S.S. TIMBALIER in Saving Our Lives at Sea.. . , with the date, latitude and longitude and names of the crew offthe JADE of Bermuda. HIsToRY Although the greatest part of the TlMBALIER's steam- ings have been in the Caribbean, she has played an important role in various fleet operations such as PORTEX , LANT- FLEX , and CONVEX , MAINBRACE and SPRING- BOARDU, the latter of which are portrayed, in part, in this book. While in the Mediterranean on operation MAIN- BRACE the TIMBALIER served as flagship for,Vice Admiral James Fife, USN, the Deputy Commander in Chief, Allied Forces Mediterranean. I J I .

Through their long ser- vicc the Chiefi'Petty Officers have learned how to do a job by doing it. They are our instructors,f our watchdogs, our administrators and our friends. Through close liason between officers and crew they see that thefwork goes right on, Among our Chiefs is the Chief Master at Arms. He is seen around the ship enforcing the ships' orders, and in general is the local representative of the law. However like all the Chiefs his duties are varied, and along with the others can be found doing anything necessary to keep a ship running smoothly. l 1 ,'.' I in ie,e Q N t a li X T E.. GMC.
