The members of the graduating class of 1951 will wish to remember that our new physical education building is opened and dedicated this year. just a few days ago in re-reading Dr. Richard Cabot's famous book entitled, What Men Live By, I came again upon the following: Let us abolish terms like physical culture, or mental training. To be concerned either with one's mind or one's body is a morbid practice. This statement from an eminent physician made me wonder if we were wise in erecting an elaborate and expensive physical education plant. Then I followed on and read, We should be occupied with tasks that make us forget both mind and body in a higher union of both. It is now happening that doctors are not the only people disturbed by over em- phasis on one hobby or one pursuit. Even the sports writers seem to be disturbed about over emphasis on athletics. They need to be for they have been partly responsible for it. Our new building is not only for the training of the body. The boy who enters it in a gym suit should not check his mind or his spirit, or his courtesy else- where. He should bring his whole life and all his faculties and when he takes a shower after the games he will want to wash away what he has learned to be unwholesome in his life. Preparation for living in one world means training to live one whole life. This has often been done in a one-room school and in a one-building college. Let us beware that a wide spread campus and imposing scattered buildings do not make us scatter brained and divided personalities. We dedicate our new physical education building at Tilton School to the cultivation of the healthy, wholesome, helpful virtues of Christian manhood. The members of the class of 1951 will all want to dedicate their lives to this worthy objective. 6564,

It is a high privilege to be able to represent the Tilton School as its Head- master in extending best wishes to the class of 1951. For more than a century groups of boys and girls have gone out from the halls of this school to College and University and ultimately to take their places in the varied walks of life. On the alumni rolls of today will be found the names of many who have achieved success and some who have achieved greatness. Our Alumni record would do credit to any school. The class of this year goes out into a very uncertain world. No one would dare prophesy too much about the future. Confusion is the dominant note of our day, World conflict threatens to break out again into world war. Able bodied boys will be called into the armed forces and it is difficult for young people to plan. - It is sincerely hoped that Tilton has given each member of this class some preparation for the facing of this kind of world. Such preparation includes not only knowledge of facts and skill in learning but also the development of certain spiritual powers which gave, us confidence in the midst of uncertainty. The best wishes of the Headmaster and his family go with you of this class. We wish you unlimited success. But above all we wish for you those high qualities of character which will make you men of whom your Alma Mater may be proud.
