This closeness is insured by the system used in this country of structuring the educational plan with elected represen- tatives of the citizens at the head of all activities which com- prise the schooling. These representatives, the Board of Educa- tion, see to it that the proper personnel is on hand to staff the schools and that buildings and equipment for their use is pro- vided. Tillamook's District 9 has prided itself for years on the dedication of its Board of Education and this pride continued for the current year. Chairmanned by Karl Zweifel, shown at left, the five members saw the school year through successfully. Always looking for the best education possible, they encouraged experimentation with new trends while urging continued use of good plans carried over from the past. They urged that Superin- tendent John Jensen take part in the visit to European schools and permitted his release for the six weeks of his absence. A contented staff and an efficiently educated group of students attested well to the success of local leaders shown on this page. KARL ZWEIFEL Chairman of the Board BOARD OF DIRECTORS LEFT TO RIGHT: Jim Coon, Bus Schelling, Karl Zweifel, chairman, Claire Peterson, and Cliff Colton. Guidance and Adult Education Mrs. Alice Voges, freshman counselor, and Miss Esther Chapman, head of the Guid- ance Department, work to- gether to guide and help solve problems of students. Mr. Richard Larsen served as head of the adult education center for district 9 as well as head public relations man. Mr. Larsen was also part time faculty, teaching several classes of French. ee oem « u NN Mrs. Jean Bailey, secretary of the Guidance Office, and Mr. Don Whitney, boys’ counselor, are also part of the Guidance Office staff. Home of the Mooks Tillamook High School is, of course, the‘‘Home of the Mooks,’’ an alterante name for the Cheesemakers, the official name of our athletic teams. The 1965 Kilchis has used a cartoon representation of the THS Cheesemaker, and proudly called him the ’65 MOOK, This MOOK became our symbol of the faculty, the students, the activitities, and the athletics. He is the symbolic SPIRIT of Tillamook High School, so evident in its athletic contests and the enthusiasm of students, faculty, and administration, Our MOOK, then, would like to introduce you to our 1965 Kilchis. But the reward is high-- the diploma signaling the end of twelve years of training. Following are the Mooks who donned caps and gowns and marched forward in June to receive their trophy. LENIORES Seniors, Class of ’65 y it flee i A = Vince Hartman, president. This class set many significant marks that will be hard for any other class to equal either scholastically or in extra- curricular pursuits. Their first big achievement was to take a first place in Homecoming float competition. In the same event their princess, Joanne Foster, won Homecoming Queen for 1964. Her court, all seniors of course, was Kathy | Holden, Chris Milner, and Judy Hofmann. Co- chairmanned by two seniors Ken Baumgartner and Joyce Jones, this homecoming was rated, best ever. Closely following Homecoming was the senior class play, Mrs. McThing a roaring success as a comedy-fantasy and well attended. Then as the year went on the seniors won top place in scholar- ship on the honor roll, regularly, held important positions in athletics, and generally carried out the distinction of their role as top dog. As the year rolled along senior centered ac- tivities became even more prominent: the Winter Formal, the March of Dimes Drive, the Prom and the Prom Queen, the senior breakfast, baccalaureate, and the big event, graduation. For some it came too fast--high school was over. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS--ABOVE: Dave Vogt, president; Bob Gettle, vice-president; Bonnie Rosenberg, secretary; and Vicki Shultz, treasurer. Carrying out the theme of this year's Homecoming, the class of '66 came up with an interesting float consisting of a cage of Tigers and a Mook taming them. The float was a lot of hard work but also a lot of fun. | The junior class participated in all school ac- bi | tivities and was always a good competitor in com- petition yells. There were many junior athletes who supported the football and basketball teams. The songleaders, who were all junior girls, were awarded a trophy at yell school for being the second best group in the state. The Homecoming princess of the Class of '66 was lovely Kathy Holden. Their big money-making project this year was the Junior class candy sale. It was successfully headed by Chris Hansard. These are just a few of the things that helped to make this class successful in everything that they did. 50 Junior class advisors were Mr. Don Peterson, Miss Dessie McClay, and Mr. Robert McPheeters. As freshman, Betty Winkler represented them as their Homecoming princess, Chris Milner I represented the class in '64. The sophomores rallied this year and took second place in the float competition, com- | pared to a third their freshman year. Their second- | place float symbolized the Mooks dragging a caged L i Tiger by the tongue, The class gave fine support to all the athletic teams through forceful yelling. They were always high in bus signups. In sports Steve Adams and John Malcom brought renown to the class through their athletic ability. Adams represented Tillamook in the state cross-country meet, and Malcom was the varsity football quarterback. The class of '67 has now fought their way through the two toughest years of high school, and next year they will be upper-classmen. Meeting daily as a regular class for credit, the choir directed by Miss Gellatly produced outstandingly throughout the season, Their earliest showing was the winter andChristmas concert where they had a large repertoire of performances for the public. Other appearances before the public occurred at the spring concert, the annual music festival and graduation. They always added the right touch to any music occasion as they wore beautiful gray choir robes with red stoles. Under the direction of Bill Fowell and assistance of Lane Woods the band continued to make its contribution to the THS trophy case by competing in several local and out-of-town parades and coming home with fine tro- phies and plaques. A few of the many band activities were the Dallas Marching Festival, Albany Armistice Day Parade, Miss Oregon Pageant Parade, Marine Band Concert, Merrykahna Parade, and the Fall, Winter, and Spring Concerts. The Blue Notes, a select band of eighteen players, were a popular group around school. Under the direction of Mr. Bill Fowell they played mood and dance music for assemblies, concerts, and special invitation. They were chosen on past experience and by auditioning. The team got off to a fast start by defeating Newberg 61-52 in a double overtime thriller and then tromping Ti- gard 78-67. A deep slump then plagued the Mooks as they came out on the short end of 13 consecutive scores. Many of these were overtime and 4 5 point losses. With but three games remaining and in undisputed pos- session of tenth place, the Mooks decided they had had enough of the cellar and of consecutive losses. Hosting Oregon City, the loop's fourth place team, the — Mooks finally turned tigers and scratched their way to a pop- ular, and convincing 58-51 win over the Pioneers. The 3 Mooks put out a solid team effort as they ended their sicken- — ing 13 game losing streak. In terms of the win and loss record the season was far from outstanding, but Coach Goertzen did develop a great deal of potential track men for future years. Standouts like Steve Adams, John Schriber, Tom Lar- son, Rich McInerney, Ron Wiitala, and Rich Wells will be back to compete next year. The season produced no wins in league competition, Steve Adams who had run the 2-mile in top time all season and seemed preened for the top place in the league for state was hampered by injuries in district and did not qualify. Tillamook was third in the Lake Oswego Relays, third in a three-way with Dallas, and St. Helens, lost to Lake Oswego 118-13, to Forest Grove 95-35, to Tigard 78-81 2, and to McMinnville 94-37. The Cheesemakers lost to Neah - Kah-Nie 55-26, 69-38, and placed second behind them in the county meet.
