It is their task each year to insure the continuance of good schools in the area, to care for the present build- ings, and to prepare plans for erection of future structures, to hire good teachers, and to budget funds for the running of one of the county's big businesses: education. Their task this year was complicated by a muchlargerstudent enrollment than they had anticipated necessitating hiring of more teachers and endeavoring to provide rooms for the greater load. They met regularly once a rnonth, and sometimes District Clerk more, in the office of the superintendent conducting Assistant Superintendent Blanche Lemire this business. Certainly few public officials in the John Jensen district served more faithfully than our school board, and the high school student body was definitely appre- ciative for the fine facilities for education provided them. The 1958-59 student council, one of the largest in the history of Tillamook high school, working under a new and revised constitution, accomplished some fine improvements and projects throughout the school year. A successful Hello Week, a good Homecoming program, a Goodwill drive, various attempts to name the football field, sponsor ing a foreign exchange program, a petition for landscaping, organizing the heart fund drive, carrying out a March of Dimes program, and giving a student body play kept everyone in the council busy. Since they had more lee-way in size of pictures and art work, the staff set about producing what they felt would be a really professional yearbook. PEP BAND PLAYS VICTORY SONG TILLAMOOK'S LARGEST BAND PRODUCED Music was sweet indeed from the Tillamook High School Band. Enrollment swelled in a mighty crescendo, and hard -working director, Edwin Kaphammer, received welcomed aid from new assistant director, Graham Perry, to make rehearsals run like a Strauss waltz. Highlights of the year were the Christmas Con- cert and the Spring Concert. The bands, the full band and the lively pep band, had pep ratings of high -c for their per- formances at home games and pep assemblies. lt was a memorable year and a fine tribute to the direction of Mr, Kaphammer and Mr. Perry N' f XX ,W X. xxx . , i xv , x ' F' N 'iU.f x A h: ' gk. :I f X Y 1? -px : .. -ff 'ex L .Ui Angra' A X. aj - N Nj 4 2 ' 1 -2 ww- f I I f Qi ff , ig k fr fl 5 1 'M S 1 i f A Z 4 U 5 i 1 V. The Tillamook hoop team had the most successful season in eight years, both in the win-loss column and prestige-wise. The squad opened play with seven straight victories and at that time were one of the four undefeated teams in the state. Coach Dooher guided the Mooks to a pre-league victory over Evergreen and a double win over Ashland. Then the squad defeated St. Helens in the TYV jamboree, 14-8. Going into league action they opened with victories over Oswego and Newberg and then whipped highly touted Tigard and McMinnville teams by large margins. Then came the blow that sent the Cheesemak- ers reeling into a slump. The Tilla-hi cage crew journeyed to the Oregon City gym to receive a disas- trous 45-42 defeat. They carrie back to defeat West Linn and then in a thrilling contest, in a packed gymnasium, lost first place to St. Helens by a score of 59-51. The Mooks squeaked by Forest Grove then lost to Dallas and Oswego in contests which were decided in the last minute of play. Then the Cheesemakers edged Newberg, and followed this with a 68-62 win over Tigard, in which Dutch Hoff- man got 24 points. The McMinnville Grizzlies defeated Dooher's hoopers 53-48 but the team revenged an earlier loss by tromping Oregon City 74-42, Bob Baty hit a Tillamook scoring record in that game by getting 31 points Next, the Cheesemakers belted West Linn but then Bill Adams.and his St. Helens crew knocked them out of a state tournament berth.
