C!IIl1'fl'.Y-1' of IJUITHIIYX Slmlia ' ' ' FQREWARD ' This edition of the Kilchis is the student's contribution to the records of Tillamook Iiigli School for the 1951-1952 school year. Each year the Kilchis staff strives to bring to the students an annual that will stimulate the memory and keep alive the joy and association of thoughts for that past year. The 1952 Kilchis presents a complete pictorial review of the main events, the victories, the classes, the faculty, the dramatics and the honors won during the school year. This issue marks the end of the first twenty-five years of progress for the Kilchis, under the name Kilchis-twenty- five years of memories and records of those events taking place. ln keeping with this fact, the theme for the 1952 Kilchis is a combination of Silver Anniversary, and a presentation of thanks for the new school building, occupied last fall. The division pages will follow the theme. -Norman Matbeny ? . Qin. ,N . ,, -X ' Mm, H I ' M 1. ff' 14 ,ff 15- ' 2 ' G hi 1. 3:14, Vg! DEDICATICD To the Taxpayers of District No. 9: This edition of the Kilehis. .1 pictorial review of the events of this school year, 1951-1952, is dedicated to you, the people ofthe district. lt is only fitting that this should be so, as you have provided this beautiful new building for the high school students of Tillamook. Purely by chance this liirst edition to come from thi new school also marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of this publication under the name Kilrlvis. f The erection of this building brings to realization the fact that the community has made great progress since the Kilchis first got its present name a number of years back. Such progress was possible only through the com- plete co-operation of the citiyens of the area. So the students who have enjoyed this first year in the building extend deep thanks for the consideration of the taxpayers ia planning and erecting such a modern educational plant and in providing the other modern facilities, and do for this reason dedicate this Kilchis. the Silver Anniversary lidition, to you. -Sidney Weigel It All Happened in 1951 - 1952 September -4 l-4 131 ZH Ur tober Novel 5 .x 12 lit I!-4 26 26 uber '7 5-ti .D fl lo.ll 1.1-lti llecen Til ltl 112 213 iber l 3 7 7 S lil I5 I5 220 .,l -r -1 -vi 217 .,8 29 January 4 5 9 10 11 15 18 First clay of school. This was due to the abundance of space in the new high school and lack of space in Liberty. With the west end of the building serving as their hang-out for the most part, the newly adopted eighth graders made a definite place for themselves in their new environment. Their president. Gay Tippin, showed the capabilities of under-classmen by being elected and serving very efficiently on the student body yell team. The junior High yell leaders were made up entirely of eighth graders. They were Rose- mary Lamb, Sharon Canterbury, Mary Ann LeDuc, Betty Pruess, and Carole Loop. Their basketball team lost only two games, won the county championship, and went on to the State eighth grade play- off. This same team came within one point of beating the Ifrosh team. The eighth grade class was the largest in the school with an enrollment of approximately 160. . --Du Lt' Rarey gain, l, ISM..-Il, Ix. .-Xllri-il, II. lmmIl'lm'Ii, V I Y 4 Br.inii', IS. Hiislii-y, Il. The one big activity of 1951-1952 was the sponsoring of the IS squad basIsetbaII banquet in the spring. The money was earned for this by the magazine selling contest held in early NIareIi. This year was the first time the senior high Ciirls KY Leabue had ever taken over these saIes. The eighth and ninth grades were Iargely responsibIe for the profits made from these sales. -Dm' Wfriifgi' Ia-ll lo riqhi: 1. 'lah--r, 5, Wviui-I, .I, Ixreini-i's, Ix. Iiiipin, Ix, .Ii-nsvii, I'. In March, Mary Lou Oldenkamp and Marianne Vasey went to a meeting in Forest Grove. In order to raise money, the girls made candy and sold it in the hall. The group is planning to have a state officer and arrange .1 convention here in Tillamook next year. Miss Diasher, state advisor, on her annual visit, complimented the group on their well organized meetings and activities. TAVIIl'fftl May THE HOME IS THE CENTER Ulf THE UNIVERSE The l-lomemaking Club was organized for girls who are interested in cooking and sewing and who do not have a class of Home Ec. These girls were under the supervision of Miss Hogle. This club meets every Tuesday and gives the girls a chance to cook and sew. As a project most of them are making drindl skirts. This club also helps to widen the knowledge of livestock, seed planting and harvesting, and soil conservation. The Tillamook High School, lfuture Farmers of America have gone to many contests and placed high in various fields. In the Northwest Regional Contest at Banks high school on February 16, Tillamook placed higher than any other school present, earning points in the shop work, metal work and public speaking fields. The school farm is one of the most important activities of this group. Mr. Helmick serves as the advisor. -Al Goldman HEAD, HEART, HANDS' AND HEALTH Based on everyday living, 4-H club work is a program of voluntary education in the practical arts of homemaking and agriculture. The projects in their club range from lamps to tables. Mr. john Turbyne, shop teacher, is their advisor. Turbyne's Termitesh met every Thursday during the year. -Marjorie WfIk.F?'S!IIl GREASI-1 MONKEYS Popular request brought these two clubs to Tillamook High School. and the number of applicants for the club made two meetings necessary. Using Mr. Turbyne's shop as a garage, the Tuesday group assembled there to work on their jalopies, while Thursday, Mr. Helmick's agriculture shop became a grease pit. The Tues- day club had Connie Dye as president and the Thursday club, Dwight Curl. Mr. Platt served as advisor for the Thursday club. The activities of the garagemen has been held down to such things as operating spark plug cleaners, and compression testers because of the lack of necessary equipment. A start has been made and the hopes are that the club will have more material next year. The boys certainly pitched in selling pop corn to buy equipment. so the will was there. -Gary Carualmn Bin-k run ll. Ulsnn, J. Hulvertsuii. Si 1-ond r-mv: C, Dye, B. Shuler, N. Olson. J, Bushy. V. Activities of the troupe included sponsoring a Christmas dance in the cafeteria, and cosponsoring the class plays and student body plays. Several Thespians wereiin each of the plays. The troupe sold flower bulbs to raise money for Best Thespian Awards, and to partially finance the formal banquet held in the spring. Because the completion of the auditorium was delayed, play production was held up. so initiation of new members did not take place until after the Junior Class play, when 14 new members were initiated, bringing troupe membership to 36 Due to a crowded program of school and community affairs in the auditorium it was not possible to sched- ule a Thespian play. Lady had a cast that was bigger than any dramatic event ever before attempted by T.H.S. It numbered approximately 70 people, and since not all seniors could participate, actors and doubles were chosen and grade school students portrayed the children's parts. Charlotte Taber, again had the lead in her class play. This time as the bewildered Liza Elliottf Liza, QCharlottej editor of the fashion magazinei Allure, went to see Dr. Brooks, fDick Lundyj a psychiatrist. It seems Liza had been troubled for some time with an inferiority complex, and had pushed the complex down inside of her with a mannish, abrupt, exterior. Her troubles revolved around trying to decide whom to marry: Randy Curtis, fllanny Peoplesj a he-man, idol of the silver screeng Kendall Nesbitt, QLeonard Bishopj a rich, highly successful, unhappily married, business mang or Charlie johnson. CBob Rig- gertj her annoying business associate. Maggie Grant, fKay Tippinj lfashion Editor of Alllrrv, was Liza's best friend and confidante. Through- out the play they suffered together over the eceentricities of Alison DuBois, CPatsy Peregoyj a very false French writer, and Russel Paxton, fDoug McCoolj a rather feminine, unpredictable photographer--both of fiHllI't'. Susan Turbyne played Liza at the age of 4. At the age of 9, Liza was played by Sharlee Wridge, and Mary Olson took the part of Liza aged ll. Liza's father and mother were portrayed by Ron Ashby and Joyce Karn. This was the first play to be presented in the new auditorium, and the seniors were more than S200 richer after expenses were paid. The intramural program was compiled by the officers of the club. This year the G.A.A. sponsored a Play Day on March 15. To this Play Day. the club invited seven G..-X..-X. clubs from outside schools. The girls competed in basketball, volleyball and various other sports. An initiation was held and several juniors and sen- iors came into the club. To become a member a girl must earn Su points by participating in sports. The Girl! Athletic Association, went on a week end trip. This trip and also some new sports equipment was paid for by money the club earned by selling cake in the hall during the noon hour. -Iomzm' W'i'fu'r JUNIOR llliill Cllllilili l.liAlJl-1115 The junior High Cheer l.eaders were elected by an unanimous vote of the student body. These cheerleaders were present at all the -lunior lligh games and did a fine job of cheering for ilit' team. This is the first year that Tillamook lligh School has had two sets of cheer leaders and since the plan has worlted out so well, the student body will undoubtedly use it again next year. -Maxim' l.t'll'j.X s 0 If O mls o Y i ix 1 .
