Bennett resigned his position as principal after his many years of service here, it seemed as though no one could he found to fill his place. Principal I-larry Lindahl assumed that diflicult task last fall and has proved a worthy successor. He will be with us again next year. Principal Lindahl came to us from Corvallis where he had served for two years as high school principal. He has been responsible for many changes in our school this year, perhaps the most important being the introduction of the home room plan, and supervised study. The Techmen threw a monkey wrench into the Tillamook machine with disastrous results to the Cheesemakers, the hnal count being 16 to o. For some reason the team went into a slump after the first game, and the famous Tillamook spirit seelned to lag. The next week Rarey's boys fell before Lincoln Hi by a 6 to o score. Tillamook's defense, however, stopped several of the smashing Lincoln marches a few feet from the goal. Tillamook lost its first conference game to Newherg, I3 to o, on the Newberg held. The victors were considered inferior to the Tillamook team but it seemed as though Tillamook could l'lOf get started. These defeats resulted in a pep arousing campaign which ended with the biggest rally ever held in Tillamook. With this send-off, the Tillamookers played inspired football and downed a surprised and powerful McMinnville team, Il to 7. This game was one of the most thrilling ever seen here. The locals started a smashing drive, but it was checked by a disheartening fumble which resulted in the visitors' lone score. The locals only fought harder and piled up two touchdowns. In the last few minutes Mac opened a passing attack which carried the ball to the four-inch line, where they met a con- crete Wall in the Tillamookcrs and were stopped in four plunges, as the gun sounded. Players on this team are thoroughly drilled in fundamentals, and gain much experience from practice against the A team, also a considerable number of bumps and bruises. Merton Owre had charge of the squad last fall. Two games were played, both of them with Wheeler high school. The hrst game on the Wheeler held ended in a scoreless tie. Neither team showed much of an offensive. Tillamook showed vast improvement in the second game at home and downed its rival, I3 to o. The game was played in a sea of mud. Wheeler's defense was broken easily by using straight smashes through the line. Several good chances to score were spoiled by fumbles near the goal line. The squad was unsuccessful in scheduling games-with otherlschools later in the season. Following this, the squad embarked on a victorious barnstorming trip through southwestern Washington. Kelso was downed Li to 16. Chehalis lost a11 overti111e game, 19 to 16. By con- verting a free throw at the final gun, Dan Mahan put Tilla111ook ahead of Hoquiam, 14 to 13. Raymond was nosed Olllf in another overtime game, 14 to 13. Buel was the hero by making a free shot. Tillamook won easily from Forest Grove, 64 to 16, in the first conference game. Hillsboro, a supposedly tough opponent, was swamped, 45 to 9, the following night. The state champion, Washington High, of Portland, was the next victim in a thrilling 18 to 15 game at the armory. The boys then lost to Astoria, 11 to 17, the first defeat at the hands of a high school team outside the state tournament in two years. The slump continued, resulting in a go to ll loss to the local Comets in a rather listless game. A week later the boys came to life and avenged themselves by handing a 31 to 14 defeat to the Astorians in a fast, hard fought battle. McMinnville, the Cheesemakers' most dangerous conference rival, found itself on the short end of a 19 to 16 score when the smoke of a torrid contest had cleared. A large caravan of local fans and students accompanied the squad. Newberg fell before the Tillamookers attack 41 to 9. Tillamook again won from Hillsboro 38 to IO on the local floor. The McMinnville team with its artillery loaded for big game and ac- companied by a roaring army of rooters and a brass band, descended on the haunts of the Cheesemakers, determined to banish forever the irritating jinx or magic charm which the latter persisted in using against them. They were next swamped, 37 to 7, by the fast team from Garibaldi, Wheeler presented the squad with its first victory, zo to 6. Nehalem also fell a week later, ll to 17.. Bay City offered little opposition to Mellis' boys and was buried under a 43 to 9 score. Garibaldi again over-ran the Tillamookers, this time 38 to 11, on the local floor. Wheeler came back at the local crew and gave them a dose of their own medicine, zo to 6, in the game at Wheeler. Tillamook again won from Nehalem at Nehalem, I4 to 9. They next took a LS to I4 drubbing from the strong Cloverdale team. The largest score of the year was rolled up against Bay City. There were only five boys left in Bay City high school, due to the mumps epidemic. These five managed to hold Tillamook to a 53 to 7 count. The Bay City Midgets, an independent team, were vanquished 7.6 to 15. The B squad boys surprised themselves and everyone else by nosing out the league-leading Cloverdale hoopsters, 17 to 16. Tillamook really showed its full strength for the first time and played the best game of the season. Coach Mellis promised the boys a chicken dinner if they won, little expecting them to do so. I-le stuck to his promise, however, and gave the feed. Lyle Conover was high point man for the season with 96 points. His nearest rival was Dolor Zachman with 48 points. lt was diPf1cult to get a winning combination developed, due to the fact that most of the members were out at one time or another with the mumps. She was with the girls, creating a greater enthusiasm in sports, until the end of january, after which she took up the duties of home- making. Her place was filled by Miss Edna Blomstrom. Mrs. Fdwards came to Tillamook the first of last year from Oregon State College, where she graduated with high honors in scholastic and athletic activities. Her work in Tillamook High has been appreciated by the girls, and her departure was regretted. Mi.s'J Edmz Blomffrom Miss Edna Blomstrom received her first two years of college training in Colorado, and graduated from Oregon State, where she spent her two later college years. Her first real experience in teaching started when she came to Tillamook High, and took over the classes of Mrs. Edwards. The girls' classes in gymnasium, swimming, and sports continued as they had been before, with an addition of a tumbling class. A greater interest has been aroused by the efficient work of the new instructor. Games of soccer and field hockey are to be added at the beginning of the next year. An athletic association of all high school girls is also to be formed next year under the auspices of the Girls' League. Under this association, the management of the point system and the schedule for every game will be taken care of by managers elected by the girls. The number of points will be raised from 8oo to ISOO, and each girl must turn out for three-fourths of the ractices, and lay in two-thirds of the games to earn her points towards MPH P .1 T . Dcfmrmlwzff J outnalism Considerable interest in practical journalism has been aroused in Tillamook high school through the writing of the Hi-Lights and Spokesman, school sections in the two local papers, by the two 'Iunior English classes, under the direction of Clarence Oliver. During the first semester there was keen competition among the students in an attempt to have their news stories published. There was also much competition between the two classes, each attempting to have the largest and best section in the local paper each week. The news sections written by these classes received honorable mention in the Harrison Ellsworth cup contest at the associated student news conference held at the University of Oregon in January. At the beginning of the second semester, each class elected an editor, and each student volunteered to write in the department in which he or she was best suited. The play rivalletl the Senior play of last year, Are You a Mason? in impossible complications antl situations. The story concerns two young men, exactly opposite in character antl type, who are rivals for the hantl of a pretty girl. One of these young men is a cynical, overbearing person antl inconsitlerate of the feelings of others. The other chap is pleasant, antl always spreatling the applesauce by complimenting people on their beauty or health, whether it be tictitious or not. Because of his happy-go- lucky nature, this fellow cannot holtl a job antl consequently is penniless most of the time. Her father is much the same type as the fellow she is to marry, but her mother is of an untlerstantling nature. Becoming tiretl of the cynic's everlasting criticism, she breaks the engagement and marries the other chap, whom she really loves. This brings the enmity of her parents, but she leaves to live with her husband in humble rooms above a drug store. The husband fintls it hard to support a wife on as meager an income as his, so charges some bills to his uncle, who is com- paratively wealthy. The uncle is furious, but is subiectetl to a flow of apple- sauceu, and cools down to the point of olfering his nephew a good position in his business. Through his work these departments have advanced more rapidly than any other department of the city schools. He came to Tillamook from Nehalem, where he formerly resided and was principal of the Nehalem high school for four years. Upon the opening of the fall term, he organized the Tillamook hots' hand, the high school orchestra, and the hots' and girls' glee cluhs. His elforts in developing these organizations have heen successful, as shown hi' the line performance of the organizations when they appear hefore the puhlic or the assemhly. Being an accomplished musician and vocalist himself, he has entered into many activities in this community. He directs the Nlethodist Church choir, which presented a Christmas cantata on Decemher 13, 1918, and during the Tillamook county fair week. directed the city hand, which received much praise from those who saw and heard it play. I-le occupies a position in McGhee's Concert Orchestra as clarinetist, hesides heing a vocal and instrumental instructor. Mr. Newman, in speaking of the music talent of Tillamook schools says, l have found exceptional musical talent in hoth vocal and instrumental lines among the students of Tillamook schools. This talent has heen de- veloped through the channels of hoys' and girls' glee clubs, hand, and orchestra. With such a nucleus as this, we are assured much stronger music departments in Tillamook schools in the future. XX1Il'lI Debate After a series of debates in the Dialektikon debate club, which was formed this year by the students who turned out for debate, the team representing Tillamook high school was picked to debate for the district championship. Clarence E, Oliver, debate coach, has given much of his time towards working up a good debate team, A county schedule was planned at lirst, but later this was changed to a series of triangular meets within this district. The question debated this year in the district was, Resolved: That the sofcalled 'grange export debenture' plan of farm relief' should be adopted by Congress. Tillamook was eliminated by losing both debates in its lirst triangle. The decisions were 1 to i in favor of Bay City, when their allirmatiye team met our negative team hereg and 1 to 1 in Sheridan's favor when our negative team met their allirmative in Sheridan. Both were close decisions. Each year a pin is awarded to every member who makes the debate team. Those who received pins this year were, on the negative team, Lois Parrazo, leader, and Twila Woods, on the allirmative team, Nlaysel Smith, leader, and Eva Ilrakel. Public Speaking The public speaking class has taken the place this year of the former expression classes. This class is directed by Miss Nlildred Hess, and its work is to learn the art of public speaking. During the school year there have been several interesting programs given by members of this group, before the student assembly. The school was well represented by Dorothy Escb, a member of this class, when she took second place at a district interpretation contest held at McMinnville, Oregon, in March. Students of Tillamook high school also represented the school in the county declamation contest held on May S.
