Page Sixteen The Acad ami c VALEDICTORY Reverend Fathers, Sisters, Parents, and Friends: We, graduates of nineteen hundred forty-eight, have before us the task of entering a fuller and more active life, Through these twelve years of education, we have been preparing for this step and are now ready to take our place in the world, as strong Christians and loyal citizens. We leave our school, furnished with guiding principles to mold our characters and shape our destinies. Hope fills our hearts with high expectations for the future. Although at times the way has seemed diflicult, with hardships and disappointments, these have been more than surpassed by the joys of happy days, which will be uppermost in our minds to the end of our lives. The world of which we shall soon form a part is passing through one of the greatest upheavals of all times. It is both revolutionary and evolutionary. It will be our duty to stand in opposition to two great dangers: excessive use of creature comforts, and the menace of disguised, athestic, political policies. The use of modern comforts and pleasures is excellent, only the abuse of these may tend to develop a Godless life, at the expense of spiritual values, while the great danger in evil government today is in our indifferent attitude toward it. The times demand constant vigilance, quick decision, unerring judgment. Vvlith zeal and vitality we cnter this new Held. Much we have won, for which we must render an account. For the privileges which have come to us with amazing force in these last moments, we must do justice. This we shall accomplish by developing a strong enthusiasm, that can never be silenccdg an unswerving loyalty, unchanged in victory or defeat, and high minded integrity against all superficiality. With high aim, firm purpose, and unselfifzh ambition we will know no failure nor defeat. To our pastors, teachers and parents, who have assisted and guided us with fortitude and patience, we wish to show our sincere gratitude not in words only, but in actions. In our behalf you have devoted your energies, giving us a new spirit of mind. mode of thought, and standard of life. You have impressed on our minds the truths that will develop in each one of us the truest manhood and womanhood. We came untired, unlearned but we go with higher ideals, clearer understanding and marks of discipline. We shall remember you with honor, regard, respect and as a powerful influence on our lives. Cod Bless you and farewell. Undergraduates of Sacred Heart, to you we leave our memories, endeavors and goodwill. We hope you will preserve and add to, the glory of our dear old Alma Mater, remembering that: We live in the present, we dream of the future and we learn eternal truths from the past.
