1X OCPOKDOKDGJCDCJKDOKDOJCDOJCDOK DOKDOKDOOCDOKDQKDOKDO Especrally since the coming of God s Divine Son to this earth as Redeemer srnce lesus Christ founded a Church there exists an authority above thc civil power in the reli aious sphere To this relrqrous body belonqs the riqht to see that its baptizea children are trained as becomes tts members This training is called Catholic edu atron lt nic ins cooperation with Divine Grace in formina the true and perfect Christian These United States are a wonderful country We are proud and happy to be 1 s ritizcns Great benefits and advantages are ours For all of these we are truly qrateful to the Providence of God We love our coun rv dearly because it means so much to us Now it is pre isely be ause we as Catholics love our country rts aovernment and its splendid Lonstitution for which we are ready even to shed our blood that we vrew with much alarm and many aloomy forebodinqs the past and present trend of public sr hool educatron We have no hina but aenuine admiration for the vast army of pub lu. school teachers whose lives are redolent of heroism and sacrifice for the cause of American edu a'1on The work is lonq and hard the pay all too rnadeauate But at 'hc same t1me we make no apoloay for criticizing: the false principles that underlie public s hool education in the Uni ed S a es W'e mean the lack of religious ins ruction both in doama ic and moral teachlna Our government is founded upon such doqmatic ment if they are not tauqht how and why to do so? This feature of public education must cause much sorrow to all who truly love the Stars and Stripes Each day in the pubhc courts of our land we see the sad effects of this lack of reliarous trarninq luvenile court is constantly increasing Home influ ence and education in reliqron has de lined area ly and is in no way able to supply this defect Th1s is because the parents training has already been defective The harm increases the decline progresses as aenera ion succeeds generation lt is easy to point out a difficulty hard to find an immediate solution Let me at least remark that Catholic principles emphaically do not demand that freedom of worship be curtailed On the contrary we are ready to lay down our hves to main tain this riqht for ourselves and for all others No man is to be forced to accept this religion or that Freedom of speech of the press of religious worship are the very life blood of American public life But there is a vast difference between maintaining freedom of relrqion and praising a system of education pubhc or priva e that allows no place to reliqion As American citizens we claim the riqht to criticize any institu tion paid for wi h taxes derived from Catholics that fails to satisfy our consciences To make a random parallel Quakers for conscience s sake refuse to bear arms for their country and therr fellow citizens honor and respect them for their fidelity to principles Catholics refuse to send their children to public schools for consciences sake At the same time they have never refused to pay taxes for the support of pub lic education although this entails the additional burden of supporting their own Catho lic schools Surely they are entitled to honor and respect for their fidelity to principles Let it be said with Joy that they are so respected by their fellow citizens ln all difficult tasks man is cheered by sincere encouragement These words are meant as such for the Catholic parents whose sacrifices are represented by the arad uatinq class todav Gradua es of 1939 your parents have lonq realtzed the truth of the principles Just explained For this reason they have shouldered the burden car ned out the duty that is theirs They have aiven you their best as have also your self sacrificing teachers lt will be for you as the men and women of tomorrow to provt that this sacrifice has not been made in vain May your success of the past be a pledqe of the future lVfay you never fail in your duties to your parent your beloved fountry and your God' T I1 ff A ct ll fl ef nz I 1- Pug- fim- . .- ' .
