Page 76 PROLOGUE For the past forty years Tilden has been an all- male technical high school, producing students of outstanding abilities in almost every field. This past September, Tilden announced its plans to change gradually into a general co-educational high school. However, this will not interfere with those boys who are now taking a technical course. We are confident though that the freshman class will carry on the traditions which have made Til- den one of the finest schools on the South Side. '0 EVENTS OF THE YEAR One of the highlights of Tildcn’s football season is the homecoming game. For the first time in the history of Tilden, girl students were on hand as cheerleaders and fans. One of the events of the fall semester is the Open House night. Mr. Kuehl, the machine shop instructor, has John Bowman demonstrate an engine-lathe as his mother looks on. Students proudly display their derbies on Derby Day at Tilden. The Varsity “Seals” and Frosh-Soph Minnows” dis- play their talents on Open House Night. Mr. Davenport speaks to parents and relatives of students on the night of the Open House. Mr. Kubik greets parents and relatives of Tildenites during Open House. Tilden’s annual homecoming game is commemorated by the wearing of colorful derbies. Tildenites pic- tured here are purchasing derbies. Part of the annual Christmas Assem- bly is a medley of carols by Mr. Olivo's choir. 1 HE PROGRESS OF ALGEBRA AN (MPTlAN PWKXN • HAM. tT toMLC. If . 5«n rH-.! Daniel on their achievements. 6 This exhibit explains the recent pro- gress in the United States Space Program and the new heights which it someday hopes to attain. A student competing in Tilden's Science Fair must have the ability to explain his project so that both visitors and judges may understand. THE IONEF Q, + U.V- O + O OZONE (3 vi o NE GATVf The field of chemistry is responsible for many of the conveniences which we enjoy today. B. Bitautas demonstrates molecular disruption and explains its usefulness in mod- ern technology. 7 Every spring the faculty challenges the varsity basket- Sgt. Stringfellow and Mr. Caldwell close in on the ball, ball team to a fiercely competitive game. Here Mr. Logan shows other faculty members how to sink a basket. Mr. Krasnowski makes a shot look easy in the Fac- ulty - Student Basketball Game. One of the highlights of the year is the Achievement Dinner. Here students are rewarded for their outstand- ing service and scholastic work. The Achievement Dinner is en- joyed by both students and faculty members at the Stockyard Inn. Mr. Kubik presents awards to honor students P. Witthoeft and Robert An- derson for their work during the past semester. THE PRINCIPAL SPEAKS; To the Graduates — “Ask not what your country can do for you; Ask what you can do for your country.” I am sure these words of John F. Kennedy have been indelibly written on your minds by events of this last year. The decisions you make and the way you use your abilities will be your answer. I extend the wishes of the entire staff here at Tilden for your success and happiness. Edmund J. Kubik Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Miss Puder, Mr. Pollyea, and Mr. Connors, assistant principals, discuss student activities for the next term. COUNSELORS Mrs. Hilton, Freshman Counselor, talks to Diane Loftus about courses offered at Tilden. Mr. Thomas Welsh and Mr. Charles Jaris are the Junior and Senior Guid- ance Counselors at Tilden. Left: Mr. Cabaniss has been the truant officer at Tilden for the past fourteen years. Right: Mr. Kohut is well known for his efficiency as Attendance Officer and Sophomore Coun- selor. CLERKS Miss Catherine Doyle, Miss Genevieve McCambridge, and Miss Elizabeth Tarr are the office secretaries. ENGLISH Mrs. June Waser Mr. Charles Logan Mrs. Dorothy Manahan Mr. Robert Warzynski Mrs. Margaret Morrison Mr. Keith Burmeister J. Phillips talks to his public speaking class about the dangerous situation in South Viet Nam. One of the most stressed and necessary subjects at Tilden is English, which is required throughout the student’s four years of high school. The object of this is to develop not only the writing and speak- ing abilities of the average Tildenite but also to increase his knowledge of great literature. Originality in English is constantly being stressed by the teachers at Tilden. They also impress upon the students that colleges throughout the country are demanding more and more of their students in the many different fields of English, and that their future occupations will depend on their individual abilities to write and speak effectively. 12 Mrs. Margaret Irmiger Students in Miss Waser’s English class dram- atize a scene from the life of Bacchus in their study of mythology. Mrs. Patricia Scott W. Eng assists C. Izydorski to improve his compre- hension and reading rate in Reading Lab. Miss Dorothy Clark Mrs. Florence Fitzgerald 13 SCIENCE The emphasis of science in our lives today is tremendous and in the future will be even more so. To meet these challenges one must have a good science background, and at Tilden the students receive just this. In his freshman year, the student is given gen- eral science or biology, depending on his entrance examination results. In general science he is in- structed in the basic fundamentals of science, and in biology all the mysteries of living things are revealed to him. In his junior year he takes physics where he discovers the behavior of inert matter and energy and the laws governing their inter- actions. When he becomes a senior, he is given chemistry as a requirement, the science that deals with the composition of matter and the changes which it undergoes. Three years of science on the road to graduation can be quite severe; but when the graduate has finally received his diploma, he knows that he will be able to face this scien- tific world of ours with little or no trouble. R. Engram, R. Doris, R. Lindsey, and W. O’Malley work to- gether on an experiment in Tilden’s chemistry laboratory. t L. Tate checks his display for the Science Fair once more to see if everything is working perfectly. 14 R. Moran, C. Uselton, M. Carney, and S. Dennis examine specimens in their biology class. Mr. Cloyd Swem Mrs. Beulah Berghult K. Kopin, C. Jones, J. Nightengale, and J. Tate look at a three dimensional model in a solid geometry class. C. Green, E. Johnson, C. Perry, and R. Suggett examine a cone in geometry class. 16 The Mathematics Department at Tilden is one that every Tildenite can be proud of. The minimum of math that can be taken at Tilden is two years or four semesters, but for the enterprising student up to four semesters of extra math can be taken. One of the two required courses in this field is algebra. The other required course is plane geom- etry. For the advanced mathematics’ student, there is solid geometary, and calculus. A graduate of Tilden who has taken four years of mathematics knows that the mathematical abil- ities he acquired at Tilden will bring vast oppor- tunities to him in the future. MATHEMATICS Mr. James Matthews Mrs. Dorothy Wilson ttIL HMD T EUCLID Mr. Otto Turner Miss Frances Carroll Students in Mr. Matthews’ geometry class demonstrate various figures to the class. Mr. Michael Caldwell Mr. Samuel Farley Mr. Martin Huske Mrs. Lela Danzy F. Belchak studies a figure in geometry while his classmates look on. 17 SOCIAL STUDIES The courses offered in Tilden’s Social Science Department extend over a wide range; such as world history, United States history, economics, and contemporary American history. Through these different history classes the student ac- quires a strong understanding of the difficulties that have troubled the world in the past. The student learns the different causes and remedies of previous failures in governments and so bene- fits in the future from them. It has been said that one can only understand the problems of today by seeing them in the light of past events. R. Richmond points out where the Declaration of Independence was written to R. Smalik and T. Swan- son. Mr. William Mr. John Harwell Murray L. Savage, C. Rudauskas, and R. Tribue notice that anci- ent architecture resembles that of our present day White House. Mr. Jerome Rosenberg Mrs. Paula Baron Mr. Walter Ferganus Miss Kathleen Mclnerney Mr. Richard Faynor Mr. George Tomek Mr. George Botts Mr. Lewis Worst Mr. Oliver Fifer MECHANICAL DRAWING The drafting courses at Tilden are designed to introduce the mechanically inclined student to ma- chine design, theories of perspective, and the funda- mentals of architectural drawing. As a result of skill acquired in the Drafting Department at Tilden, many boys become draftsmen; others find their drafting ex- perience excellent preliminary training for work in a technical college. All in all, the drafting courses are invaluable to the engineers, architects, and me- chanics of tomorrow. Mr. Henry Ratajski Mr. Cotton watches R. Jancga put the finish- ing touches on his drafting plate. Mr. John Curran 19 SHOPS C. Hall, R. Yuskis, and R. Gerbic make last minute adjustments before painting their projects in Wood Shop. Students test a small motor in Aircraft Shop. Advanced linotype students R. Long, C. Jones, and J. Frechette get to work on their next assignment. Tilden provides courses of instruction in many different types of shop work, which is a requirement for any student entering into one of the many fields of engineering. This training is also a distinct ad- vantage for any boy who may decide to be a trades- man or mechanic. Tilden’s shops are supplied with the finest equipment that can be obtained and staffed with well-trained instructors who pass along to the students their many years of knowledge and experience. Regardless of the chosen profession that the stu- dent enters later in his lifetime, he will always find his shop training invaluable. He can always find use for it, and it contributes immensely to his under- standing of the industrial world. 777 Mr. George Wythe Mr. Paul Rupprecht Mr. William Searls Mr. Leodies Arburtha Mr. John Moran Mr. Robert Litzkow Mr. James Kuzel Mr. Robert Burgchardt Mr. Harold Kuehl GERMAN Language is the most impor- tant factor in modem society because it is the major method of communication. Naturally, when a person can express him- self in more than one language, he holds a tremendous advan- tage over one whose lingual boundaries are limited to a sin- gle language. The language courses at Til- den include introductory Ger- man and Spanish, Intermediate German and Spanish, and ad- vanced German and Spanish. SPANISH Mr. John Cullen Mrs. Rachel Robinson H. Nipson and R. Prior, studying German, circle a trouble spot in Germany. Spanish students K. Skultety, J. Frechette, and C. Jones examine a Mexican serape. Members of the Band: R. Harrison, E. Johnson, E. Folk, and E. Classco. Mr. John Olivo Mr. Edmond Dawson MUSIC In addition to the fine education that students obtain at Tilden, botli in technical and general fields, there is an opportunity for enterprising students to discover and enjoy the fine arts. In studying music at Tilden, students are able to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of classical and modern music. T. Musak and W. Musak practice a duet before the next band class arrives. 23 ART The Art I course is a basic program of a year’s duration for all students on the Annual Plan. The objective of this program is to present the fundamental ideas of creativity and to help the student relate himself more to life by show- ing the relationship between art and the environ- ment in which he lives. Students are introduced to the problems of communication throught non-verbal, visual sym- bols, and the curriculum gives them an oppor- tunity to express themselves creatively, to ex- plore, to discover and heighten their talents be- fore approaching more intensive problems if they choose to major in art. The course consists of experimentation with different tools and materials using the basic elements of design, color, and texture, to create works of art in drawing, painting, sculpture, lettering, and print making. One of the purposes of studying art is express ideas and feelings. Here students point to examples of their work. 24 LIBRARY Tilden’s library is one of the most helpful facilities offered to the students. Since last year the library has grown considerably in reference books, fiction and non-fiction books, pamphlets dealing with current events, and popular and professional magazines. Certainly the knowledge obtained from these books is truly beyond price. Typing students, under the guidance of Miss Evanoff, take a speed-typing test. Tilden students take advantage of the re- source material in the library. TYPING More and more boys have been selecting typing as an elective. They find that the ability to type is useful not only in preparing class papers but will also be a great asset in later life. Miss Olga Evanoff Mrs. Willa Brown Mrs. Daisy Lloyd Mrs. Lyle Starecvic PHYSICAL EDUCATION Mr. Frank Krasnowski Mr. Anthony Barbaro Mr. Paul Brinkman Mr. Paul Kinsey Mr. Stanley Tannehill Mr. William Parkhill Mr. Gerald Butler Miss Cherry Myles Keeping fit can be quite a problem in this world of ours where automation is rapidly tak- ing the place of human endeav- ors. This is why getting as much exercise as possible is necessary. At Tilden the average student is given a rigorous physical fitness program which includes swim- ming, health and hygiene, and sports. 26 SCHOOL PLANT Tilden’s School Plant covers three separate areas. They are the lunchroom, the bookroom, and the cross- ing guard. The lunchroom, with its fine cooking facilities, provides Tildenites with a daily balanced meal. The lunchroom is supervised by Mrs. Mary Shannon. The bookroom, which is also an important part of the school plant, is regulated by Mr. Friend. He counts, distributes, and reissues all of the school’s hooks. Tilden’s crossing guard is Mr. J. Lawrence. He is in charge of regulating the traffic before and after school hours outside the school. Tildenites will agree that these services rendered by the School Plant contribute greatly to the safety and well-being of the individual student. The women in our lunchroom not only serve Tildenites their meals with efficiency but also with a smile. Officer James Lawrence, Tilden’s crossing guard. Mr. Friend, the bookroom manager. 27 Seated: Mrs. P. Everett Galusha, Mrs. George Korbos, and Mrs. Frank Selmer Standing: Mrs. Davis Miles, Miss K. R. Mclnerney, and Mrs. B. Antkowski P.T.A. Mrs. Frank Selmer, Mrs. Davis Miles, Mrs. George Korbos and Mr. Edmund J. Kubik discuss educational problems. The Parent-Teachers Association of Tilden is comprised mainly of parents and teachers of stu- dents attending Tilden. It serves not only in pointing out and solving the many problems that face parents, teachers, and students; but it also serves as an excellent example of organization. During the year interesting programs are pre- sented concerning present day problems. The program theme for this year is “Tilden in Orbit”, and the aim is for the “Countdown of Tomorrow.” Brown picks up blocks, Penrod and Watt, and goes for extra yardage. Washington makes a last ditch effort to pull free of a Phillips’ defender as Califfe, Prowell, and Parris look on. FOOTBALL Last year Coach Barbaro promised us at least a playoff position for the 1963 season. He made this prediction in the faith of his twenty returning var- sity players. Through skill and determination, the Blue Devils did not let their coach down. They brought the Tilden Gold and Blue to the playoffs. The Blue Devils fought to a 6-6 tie with Philips in the first round of playoff competition. Tilden moved to the second round on statistics but were stopped by a hard fighting Austin squad. Tilden beat Crane 13-0 in a practice game to be- gin the season. Then later in the season the team beat Lindblon 12-9. Edging out Dunbar 7-6 was enough to carry them into the playoffs. The Blue Devils suffered losses in the Englewood, Morgan Park, C.V.S., and Fenger games; but, in general, Coach Barbaro can really be proud of this year’s team efforts. Also special congratulations are in order for this year’s varsity captain, John Smith, who made the All-City team. A picture any coach would love to see. It’s Washington fol- lowing his blockers Rogers and Walden. Row One: Mgr. Gilliam, H. Lang, K. Orro, T. Skilondz, A. Jacobs, J. Holmes, K. Penrod, W. Beck, L. Bynum, D. Drag, J. Reimbold. The Blue Devils finished with a record of 17 wins and 9 losses. They won the Blue Central Section Championship with a 6 and 2 record and because of their fine performance were elevated to the tough Red Division next year. The Tilden cagers also upset defending state champion Carver in the city playoffs before they themselves were unfortunately defeated by Du Sable. Mike Taylor and Butch Iglinski were this year’s most outstanding players. Mike led in rebounds with 164, in scoring with 337 points, in average with 16.3 points a game, in free throws with 78 and in field goals with 149. Butch was unable to come all the way up to par due to an injury he received in mid- season. He did finish second in average with 9.9 points a game and second in field goals with 7.5. Other outstanding players are Melvin Lewis with a 56.4 field goal percentage and Leroy Savage with a 86.3 free throw percentage. Special recommendation goes to Sterling Burke who poured in the last two points with two seconds remaining to beat Carver, and to the Frosh-Soph team who also took Blue Division Central Section Championship. Mr. Krasnowski should be commended for the out- standing job he has done since becoming coach of Tilden’s fine wrestling team. He attributes Tilden’s domination of the City wrestling crown to the fact that, as he says, “Our matmen have the ability to work superbly, both as a team and individually. Also, they are some of the most-spirited young men I have ever had the opportunity to coach.” Tilden Tech has always boasted a fine wrestling team and 1964 was no exception. The Blue Devils smashed Parker 27-15 to take the City Champion- ship for the thirty-fourth time. Many of the present varsity stars will be back next season to compete once again, so the title seems assured for next season also. C. Howell and E. Effort are to be commended for their fine performance in taking the 1st place title for individuals in the city; also L. Portlock, L. Gard- ner, and G. Parris for their showings in the city championship against Parker. VARSITY TEAM Row One: Effort, Johnson, Nightingale, Robbins, Taylor, Luna. Row Two: Gardner, Portlock, Rogers, Grant, Smith, Howell, Tyson, Davis. Howell attempts to break a beautiful guillotine, but Grant has the leverage. Row Two: Turner, Crumble, Martin, Pagnano, SWIMMING Tilden’s junior swim team took the sectional championship again this year for the sixth year in succession; while, unfortunately, the senior team lost its sectional championship because of the loss of a few key swimmers. Tilden’s medley relay team did well in city com- petition. These are the ribbons won by Tilden’s Seals and Minnows at the South Central Swimming Relays. In the 300 yard free style relay, the team- work of VV. Bavirsha, B. Wagner, J. Bowman, P. Grzybek, D. Kowalek, and K. Skultety brought Tilden fifth place. In the 200 yard free style relay, R. Bowman, C. Dunlap, B. Hoffman, and D. Kowalek brought us sixth place. In the breast stroke relay C. Dunlap, B. Hoffman, and W. Porter brought us sixth place. The strong performance of this year’s junior team raises the hopes for next year. In preparation for the upcoming meets, these Seals are per- fecting their racing dive. VARSITY TEAM Row One: J. STUDENT COUNCIL The most important student organization in Tilden is the Student Council. In it Tildenites share in the school’s management. Tilden’s Student Coun- cil is the only organization that represents every class, every student, and every interest. The ob- jectives of the Student Council are to further and to improve student participation in school activities, and to give the student experiences in the funda- mentals of democracy. Tilden Tech’s Student Council Scrapbook Com- mittee keeps a record of all the events and activities of the Student Council. 42 President Jerry Nightengale Secretary Eddie Newsome Calvin Barber reports on his Red Cross Monthly Conference. BAND AND CHORUS Whenever there is an important event students can always depend on the music department to provide fine entertainment. This department is made up of the band and chorus. This year the chorus has been more active than ever before. They have sung at the Pep Assembly, Open House, at the Christmas Con- cert, and the Museum of Science and Industry. The band has also been active by playing at various events, such as the R.O.T.C. Awards Assembly, grad- uation, and all home basketball games. Under Mr. Olivo’s direction the band and the chorus have improved tremendously over the past few years. The chorus under the direction of Mr. John Oliver has improved tremen- dously in the past few years. They practice during the years for such special events as the Christmas Assembly where they have a chance to display their musical ability. ROW ONE: P. Witthoeft (Editor-in-Chief); G. Ventrice (Second Page Editor) ROW TWO: J. Wayton (News Reporter); J. Matthews (Art Editor ; E. Newsome (Feature Editor). ROW THREE: R. Jenncr (News Reporter); J. TECH TIMES The Tech Times is organized into four sections to bring the students a monthly summary of the current events around Tilden in the form of editorials, essays, feature articles, and the always present page of sports. The Tech Times gives the students an oppor- tunity to put into print their thoughts and viewpoints. If a student writes an exceptionally good essay, poem, or other form of literature, it has a good chance of appearing in the Times. The various writers, reporters, and the printing staff give their time and their talent to edit the paper, which is both informative and entertaining, and to keep them up to the standards of good scholastic journalism. Members of the Tech Times Staff prepare the current issue of the newspaper. Left To Right: J. Ritchie, W. Searcy, F. Waters, P. Witthoeft, J. Wayton, E. New- some, E. Rule, J. Matthews, R. Dooley, and G. Ventrice. Mrs. Iola Turner, advisor of the Tech Times, and E. Newsome proofread a composition before it is published in the paper. The Yearbook Staff: J. Donahue, D. Keller, K. Skulltety, M. Egan, B. Snow, M. Baran, T. Tomson, and M. Pawela decide on what pictures to use for the Craftsman. CRAFTSMAN The goal of the Craftsman is to encourage stu- dents to participate in a school activity that may be of great benefit to them now and in the future. The members of the Craftsman staff must possess many different qualities because the book itself covers many areas, both in scholastic and extracurricular fields. The positions, such as editor-in-chief, writer, and photographer are filled by qualified students who know their work well. All in all, it can be said that they do a fine job each year. J. Sanchez, F. Vosnak, L. Trickle, M. Sullivan, and R. Bow- man head the chief departments of the yearbook. J. Sanchez, editor-in chief, Mr. Burmeister, sponsor of the yearbook, and K. Skultety, caption editor, look through foot- ball pictures for the Craftsman. R. O. T. C. The Tilden’s Reserve Officer’s Corps is one of the finest units presently in the Chicago Public School System. Under the supervision of well trained enlisted men, the students prepare themselves for the time they wil spend in the armed forces. There are various ranks or grades, just as in the army, and the student can be promoted according to his re- spective ability. R.O.T.C. students can also partici- pate in extra activities, a few of which are Ushers, Color Guards, Rifle Team, and Drill Team. Ribbons and medals are awarded to outstanding cadets for effort surpassing that of the average student. Sergeant Anthony M. Stanich and Sergeant Elmer W. Stringfellow. Row One: Col. E. Rice, Col. W.
