Vet e rand The Veterans' Center at Tilden, under the supervision of Mr. Post, is a pleasant room with a home-like atmosphere where the veterans of World War II study together to gain the educa- tion which was interrupted when they were fighting to protect our country. In April, 1946, there were sixty-five students in our Veterans' School; this number grew until in June, 1947, there were four hundred and twenty veterans enrolled. After this date the number gradually decreased until at the present time there are again sixty-five veterans enrolled. The veterans are required to put in a regular school day of five and one-half hours, five days a week. All of the high school academic subjects are taught here. The veteran takes a course, and as soon as he and his instructor consider him ready, he is tested by the Veterans' Testing Service of the Chicago City Junior College. In this way the veteran may earn credits as quickly as his abilities permit. A veteran may receive one of two diplomas upon comple- tion of the requirements. The GED diploma is given to those who pass the GED examination; the standard high school diploma is awarded to those veterans who take the full high school course and earn the required number of credits. Veterans complete high school work here and are given individual help in an accelerated program. Mr. Post is Counselor ol the Veteran's Center. Miss Mooney, his secretary, keeps records and pro- cesses all Veterans' Administration forms. 14
