TILDEN TRADITION Industry . . . railroads . . . homes . . . Chicago . . . and in the heart of this great area, a shining example of youth, American youth . . . Tilden Technical High School. Our school building blends in with the surround- ing scenery . . . brick against brick, steel against steel. But the living core of this stone structure . . . the boys who carry on the tradition of this great school . . . what is their ambition, their purpose in life? In the Tilden Tradition their purpose is to become leaders, to achieve success in life, to share with others the best of what they accomplish. They contribute to the Tilden Tradition, a tradition of which they may be proud. Tilden educational classes, organi- zations, and social functions produce leaders for the outside world. Athletics develop champions who achieve their goal through vigorous training. The community of Chi- cago is enriched because they share their Tilden experiences with others. Two-thirds of Tilden's lune, 1948 graduates are enrolled in colleges, either through schol- arships or personal effort. This is an example of the Tildenite's ability to reach his imme- diate objective. After graduation day our leaders take their places in art, teaching, industry, sports, and the various professions requiring the skill and knowledge of highly- trained Americans. 9

MR. LAKEMACHER Spea Cjrecl in gS, (jcn lent en : As another school year draws to a close, one can- not help but look back over the year that has passed and ask a few questions. What has been our achievement? Have we made the best of every opportunity offered to students at Tilden? Have we done the things that make our fathers and mothers proud to be our parents? Have we realized the value of leadership? Have we shown the ability to cooperate with others when they were the best leaders? Have we shown the willingness and ability to lead others toward better things when the opportunity presented itself? Have we learned to share with others? L TO THE GRADUATES I believe we have. Through the C.I.C. fund we have learned to contribute to a common fund so that we may enjoy the Tilden Times. With this fund we have made contributions to many of Chicago's worth- while charities and have assisted some of our own distressed students. We raised hundreds of dollars in a week to help needy people in Europe. Gentlemen, I congratulate you. I believe you have learned three attributes of fine character. You have recognized and exerted leadership. You have shared with others. May success continue to abide with you. Sincerely, n,u c. uu, niacher 8
