Tilden has often been termed a school of cham- pions. Exactly what is a champion? The dictionary defines the word as one who comes forward in de- fense of any cause; one who has acknowledged superiority in certain matters decided by public contest or competition. From this definition a cham- pion must have three qualifications; one who comes forward . . . leadership, acknowledged superiority decided by contest . . . achievement, . . . willingness to share. Tilden trains boys to realize the importance of leadership, gives them opportunity to practice lead- ership and is assured that in the future they will attain leadership. The Tildenite's ability to achieve is illustrated by the many city and state championships won by the athletes as well as the scholars. Through Open House, Hobby Show, and weekly socials, Tilden opens its doors to the community, to the city. The school is thus shared by all. The boys who make up the school have worked ardently to meet these requirements of a champion. They have attained their goal. The standards they established have become traditional, a part of what is now . . . The Tilden Tradition. 6

MR. LAKEMACHER Spea Cjrecl in gS, (jcn lent en : As another school year draws to a close, one can- not help but look back over the year that has passed and ask a few questions. What has been our achievement? Have we made the best of every opportunity offered to students at Tilden? Have we done the things that make our fathers and mothers proud to be our parents? Have we realized the value of leadership? Have we shown the ability to cooperate with others when they were the best leaders? Have we shown the willingness and ability to lead others toward better things when the opportunity presented itself? Have we learned to share with others? L TO THE GRADUATES I believe we have. Through the C.I.C. fund we have learned to contribute to a common fund so that we may enjoy the Tilden Times. With this fund we have made contributions to many of Chicago's worth- while charities and have assisted some of our own distressed students. We raised hundreds of dollars in a week to help needy people in Europe. Gentlemen, I congratulate you. I believe you have learned three attributes of fine character. You have recognized and exerted leadership. You have shared with others. May success continue to abide with you. Sincerely, n,u c. uu, niacher 8
