Jhe )i(den Jrudit ion 1 Zkc Craftsman 1949 TILDEN TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 3 This is Tilden— Opportunity for all who enter. As each succeeding day Crowds close upon another, Plan, work, achieve your goal. Here is life—larger than you have known, Preparation for that which is to come, Foundation for the future. Tilden is yours— You are Tilden. Jilclen in 1949 To the Tilden Senior victorious Looms a complex and wanting world. Opportunity to meet with greater challenge, To enrich the lives of others Through your efforts. Forward, onward, Techmen! Hear the cry for greater service! Behold the challenging front— Yours to conquer! 5 Tilden has often been termed a school of cham- pions. Exactly what is a champion? The dictionary defines the word as one who comes forward in de- fense of any cause; one who has acknowledged superiority in certain matters decided by public contest or competition. From this definition a cham- pion must have three qualifications; one who comes forward . . . leadership, acknowledged superiority decided by contest . . . achievement, . . . willingness to share. Tilden trains boys to realize the importance of leadership, gives them opportunity to practice lead- ership and is assured that in the future they will attain leadership. The Tildenite's ability to achieve is illustrated by the many city and state championships won by the athletes as well as the scholars. Through Open House, Hobby Show, and weekly socials, Tilden opens its doors to the community, to the city. The school is thus shared by all. The boys who make up the school have worked ardently to meet these requirements of a champion. They have attained their goal. The standards they established have become traditional, a part of what is now . . . The Tilden Tradition. 6 LEADING... ACHIEVING... SHARING. Ji (clen 7 MR. LAKEMACHER Spea Cjrecl in gS, (jcn lent en : As another school year draws to a close, one can- not help but look back over the year that has passed and ask a few questions. What has been our achievement? Have we made the best of every opportunity offered to students at Tilden? Have we done the things that make our fathers and mothers proud to be our parents? Have we realized the value of leadership? Have we shown the ability to cooperate with others when they were the best leaders? Have we shown the willingness and ability to lead others toward better things when the opportunity presented itself? Have we learned to share with others? L TO THE GRADUATES I believe we have. Through the C.I.C. fund we have learned to contribute to a common fund so that we may enjoy the Tilden Times. With this fund we have made contributions to many of Chicago's worth- while charities and have assisted some of our own distressed students. We raised hundreds of dollars in a week to help needy people in Europe. Gentlemen, I congratulate you. I believe you have learned three attributes of fine character. You have recognized and exerted leadership. You have shared with others. May success continue to abide with you. Sincerely, n,u c. uu, niacher 8 TILDEN TRADITION Industry . . . railroads . . . homes . . . Chicago . . . and in the heart of this great area, a shining example of youth, American youth . . . Tilden Technical High School. Our school building blends in with the surround- ing scenery . . . brick against brick, steel against steel. But the living core of this stone structure . . . the boys who carry on the tradition of this great school . . . what is their ambition, their purpose in life? In the Tilden Tradition their purpose is to become leaders, to achieve success in life, to share with others the best of what they accomplish. They contribute to the Tilden Tradition, a tradition of which they may be proud. Tilden educational classes, organi- zations, and social functions produce leaders for the outside world. Athletics develop champions who achieve their goal through vigorous training. The community of Chi- cago is enriched because they share their Tilden experiences with others. Two-thirds of Tilden's lune, 1948 graduates are enrolled in colleges, either through schol- arships or personal effort. This is an example of the Tildenite's ability to reach his imme- diate objective. After graduation day our leaders take their places in art, teaching, industry, sports, and the various professions requiring the skill and knowledge of highly- trained Americans. 9 W, Sled er Mr. Steuber, our new Assistant Principal, is en- trusted with the very important duties of taking care of programming and the handling of discipline prob- lems. Mr. Steuber also supervises the activities of the Social Center and does everything possible to make the socials successful and enjoyable to all. Mr. Campbell, Assistant Principal, is one member of the faculty who has been at Tilden for a period of over twenty years. Directly affiliated with the Veterans' School and the G.E.D. tests, involved in the assignment of teachers to their divisions, he has aided immensely in the development of Tilden. Mr. Schaeffer, Shop Superintendent, looks after the Tilden shops, sees to it that they are well-equip- ped and that the machinery is in good condition. He also aids in the arrangement of proper shop se- quences for boys interested in this varied field. Mr. Schaeffer is always available and willing to help. 10 THE OFFICE STAFF Seated: Miss Tarr, Miss Doyle. Miss Hopper. Standing: Mrs. Nolan, Miss McCambridge. CLASS SPONSORS Miss Mullen. VETERANS' SCHOOL Mr. Post assists a student in the selection of courses. Miss Mooney types report of credits acquired by students. Veterans complete high school education at Tilden Jilclen Vet e runs At the close of World War II the Chicago Board of Education organized high school veterans' centers so that students who had left school to join the Armed Services might continue their interrupted education. Tilden was once more honored by being chosen for the location of the South Side High School Veterans' Center. The veterans' program is an individualized, ac- celerated program where the veteran works as fast as he can absorb the prescribed material. To es- tablish credit in a subject the veteran is required to take a test given by the Veterans' Testing Service of the Chicago City Junior College. The final grade re- ceived is the average of the teacher's estimate and the test score. Of 1179 Chicago south siders who have returned as veterans to our center, 875 have completed their courses and gone on to college or some other special- ized school. 14 One of Tilden's outstanding organizations is the Parent Teacher Student association. This group of parents of students meets once each month of the school year for the purpose of finding out what can be done for the benefit of the students. P5.A Attendance at the monthly meetings has increased in the past year. Programs have been built around the theme of Better Understanding for Co-operative Living. This band of parents and teachers numbering around five hundred is a fairly young branch of the State and National P. T. A. it was founded by Miss Eleanor Murphy, a former English teacher at Tilden Technical High School, in 1933. OFFICERS — 1948 - 1949 President....................Mrs. William A. Here's to the faculty, the counselors, the friends, the companions of our days at Tilden! When we entered Tilden we considered the faculty as teachers who were paid to do a job, but as the semesters went by we became aware that they are the best friends and consultants we could have had during our four years here. We have learned to appreciate the big things . . . help in programming . . . industrial tours . . . special trips and events . . . aid in obtaining work. The little things, too, will long be remembered . . . students' birthdays . . . get well cards . . . attendance at athletic games—what a boost to morale—faculty members taking part in pep assemblies with all the enthusiasm of any student. ft.rRED ERICKS 18 In later years as we look over the Craftsman or meet old friends, we shall reminisce about teachers, classmates, events, serious and humorous . . . experi- ences at Tilden. We shall remember the difficulties which faced us, especially when we were freshmen and the help the faculty gave us throughout our school life. We shall look upon our years at Tilden as four of our best years . . . always to be remembered with pleasure and gratitude. X cinc ucic e Mrs. Friedman and Mr. Coble. e. That's the thought of students as they go through the process of shaping a piece of wood or turn- ing a stock of metal in a lathe. Our shops are supplied with the finest equipment that can be obtained and staffed with well-trained instructors who pass along to us their many years of knowledge and experience. Upon entering Tilden the student starts out with wood shop and he soon ac- quires experience to turn to metal working, printing, linotype, machine or auto shop. Work in shops offers training which is of use now and will be of value in acquiring jobs in the future. PATTERN SHOP Mr. Pfister, Mr. Stoffer and Mr. MacNab watch Donald Crispin cut a pattern. Each marking period five lists are placed outside the office door containing the names of those students who have received grades of Excellent or Superior for the preceding five weeks of work. Each student has a part in the organization. The student body elects new officers every year. Students are represented at Student Council meetings through a division representative. At these meetings the con- ditions of the school are discussed and improvements are brought up and voted upon. The Student Council is supported by the Civic Fund which is paid by every student at the beginning of each semester. cause. 44 The Student Council is the student's means of representation in the school system. The main pur- pose of this organization is to further the co-operation between the faculty, students, and community in order to keep Tilden a better place in which to work and study. One of the projects of the Student Council is the annual Christmas tree, bought and decorated by the Student Council and presented to a children's home or hospital selected by the Council. Other worthy projects are drives to keep the school clean and to improve order. Not only is it one of the best known but it is also one of the most important organizations at Tilden, because it honors the boys who have attained excellence in scholar- ship. These boys comprise a number of more than two hundred students each semester. Tilden's Honor Club organizes this group of ambitious and outstand- ing students and aids them in many ways. The members are inspired to be- come members of the National Honor Society when they reach their senior year. Each student is also guided in selecting a college and a vocation. The members of the Honor Club are proud to wear the symbols of their organization, namely: the gold pin, the shield and the scholarship letter, because by these symbols they are recognized as students who have good study habits and have attained high scholastic rank. The aim of the Honor Club is to foster good scholarship at Tilden. Each member makes an effort to raise the scholastic standard of at least one other student for the next semester. Other aims of this club are, encouragement of good citizenship, the development of leadership, upright character and un- selfish service to the school. Techmen devote at least a period daily to publication. In order to publish the paper, the first job is performed by the assist- ant page-editors who assign news, features, and short stories to the various writers in order that no mistakes appear in the final issue. Meanwhile the headline editor writes the head- lines for the stories. When the pages are made up and heads” written, the linotypers go to work. The lowly reporter however is the basis of all news papers, including our own, for it is his job to obtain facts, details and information for his stories. The reporter must also possess much ingenuity and imagination to produce interesting articles. The combined efforts of all members of the Times staff make it possible to produce a news- paper which is read with enjoyment by every Tildenite. Last semester Tech Times won Superior- All-American rating as judged by National Scho- lastic Press Association, University of Minnesota. Their object is to check on the publicity which Tilden is receiving through local newspapers and to notify students of articles written about them. Many of the bureau workers serve as collectors of items published about Tilden in twenty South Side Community papers. Others clip and record the Tilden news and then send the clipping to individual students. A clipping of the article is pinned upon the hall bulletin board for the school to read. There are many duties to be fulfilled when working with the Craftsman. The editors plan the work, assign write-ups, and see to it that the schedule runs smoothly. The Sports Editor has the same responsibili- ties pertaining to the sports section of our annual. In charge of publicity, campaigning, and advertising is the Business Manager who also has the financial headaches. The student who plans designs of the end sheets, division pages, and assigns cartoons and illustrations is the Art Editor. The principal purpose of this national high school organization is to promote leadership in schools and in society. They begin their hard work at the start of the day. The stirring renditions that Techmen hear at assemblies are the products of the efforts of Mr. Ford and the band. Boys who come to Tilden without any knowledge of music are taught to read and count music and become familiar with their instruments. The Junior Band receives these students and develops them into skilled players for the Concert Band. A group of eight boys elected by band members make up the Committee. These boys have such duties as keeping records of letter-hours, attendance, uniforms and many other tasks. With the help administered by the Committee, Mr. Ford is able to devote more time to directing. We are proud of our band for their entertaining performances at concerts, games, and assemblies. Our hats are off to Mr. Ford and the members of the band for their achievements. 54 BAND Row One: Garcia. Krajefska. Gallas. Wehrle. Row Two: Rieman. Rybarczyk. Vasilauskas. Fuller. Zielinski. Membership in clubs helps students make good use of their leisure time. They learn how to work and play together and to develop their abilities and interests which is of great value in school and in adult life. Some of the hardest workers among all club members are those of Tilden's Stage Crew and the Operators' Club. These fellows manage the stage equip- ment and operate the movie machines. They sacrifice their time and effort by co-operating with other groups in order to make our assemblies successful. Other students prefer the mental challenge of the Chess and Checker Clubs. After a tough league game players are as tired mentally as a wrestler is tired physically. The brains may be seen practicing nightly in Room 140. The top players of these teams compete in city-wide competition. In the '48 season Tilden's Chess Team placed second. Students interested in improving their knowledge of the German language meet in the German Club. They practice reading, writing and speaking German. Their biggest project is corresponding with students in Germany. The Pan-American Club, primarily for students who take Spanish, has several annual social events. The club is kept up to-date on Pan-American affairs through the Pan-American Union which is an international organiza- tion. The annual Pan-American banquet is the high-light of the year's club activities. One of the newest clubs that is gaining much popularity is the Accordion Club. The greasy finger boys, as they are sometimes called, have been invited many times to liven up an assembly program. The talent of its members is not only acknowledged by their fellow students but by outsiders as well. Robert Vobornik, one of the outstanding accordionists, recently won second prize on the Morris B. Sachs Amateur Program. The Radio and Camera Clubs do much to promote these two interesting hobbies among Tilden Students. Not only do the members have fun but they also learn more about the subject in which they are interested. This year some of the pictures taken by the Camera Club won ribbons at the Hobby Show which was held in April. The Camera Club shield is worn by more Tildenites than any other shield given out by a single club. Boys who have earned an athlete's letter, or who are players on champion- ship teams become members of the Lettermen's and Champions' Club. One of the most amusing affairs at Tilden is the Lettermen's initiation. Boys can be seen doing anything from pushing marbles down the halls with their noses to masquerading as glamour girls. For students who plan to attend college, Knights of Technology Club acquaints its members with the requirements of universities and colleges and aids them in choosing the school for which they are best fitted. At the meetings, reports are made by the members themselves on different schools. In this way those interested in going to college receive valuable information. Then there is the behind the scenes club. This is the Service Club, always ready to help where and when needed. Their motto is Service without reward , for there are no hours or credits given for work done. They co-operate with the variety shows and assemblies which they often manage alone. During the war, records of Tilden service men and their achievements were collected by the Service Club and a War Honor Roll compiled which names Tilden boys who fought and died in the Second World War. Another service is the help they give in the yearly registration for classes. Each day after school students can enjoy themselves by joining any one of these groups. The boy who does not take advantage of membership in one or more of these fine organizations is missing one of the most important phases of life at Tilden. 56 LETTERMEN AND CHAMPIONS First Row: Kunce, Brannigan, Poder, Cheung. One of the well known activities at Tilden is its snappy Reserve Officer's Training Corps. In preparation for life as an officer or civilian, the R.O.T.C. cadet receives much more than military training. He is subject to an increas- ingly difficult series of mental challenges. He acquires information, but of more importance, he gains tolerance, appreciation and understanding of his fellow men. He grows, matures, and broadens in interest. His main ambition is not war or battle; it is to keep the peace. The aim of the R.O.T.C. is not to graduate professional soldiers, but future officers and civilians of the United States of America. The R.O.T.C. offers to its cadets various activities in which they may par- ticipate. There are the Ushers, Fireguards, Colorguards, and members of the Picked Platoon. Each cadet has an opportunity to become a Cadet Officer by competitive examination. R. O. T. C. 60 FIRE GUARDS Capt. Watters, Major Huck First Row: Capt. Vondrek, 2nd Lt. Banks, 1st Lt. This club is of great importance to the individual in that it helps to develop co- operation with a group and builds self-confidence. The chorus takes part in practically every assembly, when members help to entertain the students of the school. This group is composed of 120 boys who work in complete harmony to pro- duce the wonderful music that we at Tilden are privileged to hear and which we share with others throughout the school year. A double quartet took part in a Christmas program at Lindblom High School. On Saint Patrick's day, a Barber Shop Quartet performed for the patients at the Great Lakes Naval Hos- pital. They also used their talents to entertain the P. T. A. on Open House night. Just before summer vacation the chorus in co-operation with the Tilden Tech Band will present to the students of the school a musical production with a western setting. The chorus under the direction of Miss Mullen, has succeeded in doing a very entertaining and valuable service for the school by lending its support to vari- ous school activities. 63 SENIOR AUTOGRAPHS _ ..-M yj i v 0 64 There have been very few years in which the Tilden Tech football team has not come out on top or near the top and this year's team is no exception. Losing only two games, one practice and one league, the boys under the supervision of Coaches Harvey and Hicks racked up five league and three practice victories. Captain Bob Lowe did a beautiful job of encourag- ing the team, getting them in condition and giving them the fighting spirit, as well as doing his own job at left end throughout all the games in the season. Starting the season with a practice game victory of 34 to 6 over C. V. S., the Blue Devils kept a winning streak despite heavy losses in injuries. It was not until the Lindblom Eagles put a stop to them that our team suffered a 30-0 loss against an All City Team. They came back, however, with a 35-0 practice vic- tory against Pullman Tech and kept winning through- out the rest of the league games. The last loss was when the team went to Moline, Illinois, for a practice game, but that was evened off in the last game of the season which was against St. Leo when Tilden was on the high end of a 19-12 score. Throughout the season the Blue Devils took 228 points from their opponents while giving up only 90. Wild Bill Daley, who was the spark of the team by his use of the short-punt, was substituted by Art Conroy, our T man, Ed Corcoran and Fred Loffredo. These boys had the full cooperation of the back field for the running part of the team and the line for the blocking. Tom Cerceo and John Bartkiewitz rotated VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM along with Jake DeVries at right half. Bob Colonel Ramoshka, Ray Coleman and Frank Sabatini op- erated the full back station. Our high point man was left half Ed Trubic who was also voted Most Val- uable . During his absence due to injuries, his place was taken by Bill Klobuchar who also displayed fine running. Our wide-awake centers were Dick Coleman, Larry Slajchert and Bob Gleeson. The hard-hitting guards consisted of Bud Lucas, Don Fontana, Paul Chueng, Bill Weick, Gerald Tkaczyk, Ed Fox, and Bob Poder. Sturdy Tackles were Big John Kanvert, Bob Anderson, Harry Jagielski, Don Branniqan, Ralph Bartleman, and Marion Grzeskie- wicz. The fast end position was taken by Captain Bob Lowe, Roqer Espiritu, Ladd Fundarek, Ed Mat- thews, Eddie Jangelis, Automatic Marback. who earned his nickname by kicking extra points, Tony Hefeli and Bob Casper. With many men returning next season, such as first string Bud Lucas and John Bartkiewitz, guard and right half, whose fine playing has earned them the position of Co-Captains, this season's practice and experience points to a very promising team for next year. The team was under the guidance of Coach Barbaro. Although Tilden began with a 13-6 trimming against a fast Proviso High team, our team came back hard and won most of the remaining games. The entire team played splendid ball and was determined and willing to learn the fundamentals of the game. Coaches Harvey and Hicks will polish the linemen and back field into shifty, elusive runners ready for Varsity play dur- ing spring practice. Tilden is proud of the boys. Whether Tilden wins or loses, the game begins and continues with a high spirit of energy each time our cheer-leaders take their places on the field. Carry on, Morale Builders of the Gold and Blue! 69 A new basketball season, a new team, who are they? Will they be any good? Will we go anywhere this year? These were the thoughts that raced through the minds of Tildenites with the opening of the basketball season. After the season got under way the school began to realize we had a good team. As the league games progressed, the Central Section and finally the entire city knew Tilden had a good team. The quarter- finals, the semi-finals, and then the Senior Public High School Cham- pionship Finals found that Tilden had not only a good team, but the best the city had to offer. As Senior Public League Champions they went down-state with a strong desire to do what no other Chicago school has done for 40 years—bring home the State Championship. R.O.V.A., their first op- ponent, fell to the Blue Devils 68 to 41. Tilden then met a powerful West Aurora team and although our boys provided them with a stiff fight, Tilden lost by only one point. Nevertheless, Chicago knew and the state knew that we had one of the best teams in the state. Who made up this team? Don Rose and Ralph Misiak, both on the first string of the Central Section Team, were Co-captains. Little George Macuga, All-City Guard, played quite an impressive game. At the other guard position was Bill Bandermier outstanding at defensive play. At forward there was Art Grundberg another member who made the Section Team. The member of the team who started a little late but ended with quite a bang was John Red Kehr. Playing center at 6'8 , he sparked the team quite effectively, averaging approximately 17 points a game. A fine team, Mr. Postl, a good coach, an appreciative student body—, all make for championship. Boys dash off to club meetings, to the practice field, to work or home. Not so our swimming teams. Come down to the pool any night and you will see Coach Warga's boys splash- ing swiftly through the water, endeavoring to im- prove speed, form and endurance. There are fourteen boys in the senior department known as Seals, and sixteen boys in the junior age group called Minnows. Coach Warga reports that his second semester team lacked members, but the handful of boys he did have, were a world of com- petition to our rival high schools. Some of the schools our Seals defeated were: Hirsch, Hyde Park, Harri- son, Harper. University High, Gage Park. Kelly, and Lindblom. The Minnows stroked out winnings from Gage Park, Hirsch, Hyde Park, Harper, Kelly, and Morton. In the meets, points are earned on speed in the use of three strokes: free style, breast, and back stroke. The points earned in diving are on approach, form, and grace. High point men this year were Robert Haynes, Pete Bulka, Bill Sloger, Howard Handson, Ed Skara, Tom Lindsay and Ray Kelly. Top men in diving are Jimm Harrison and Ed Martin. Swimming is a minor sport , says Coach Warga but his swimmers back it up with all their ability. They practice vigorously five days after school in the hope of bringing victory to the teams and to Tilden. 74 It's a long drive deep in center field and two more runs come across home plate as the Tilden Diamondeers chalk up another victory. The record shows seven wins in a row and the season is not completed. The team is now tied for first in the Central Section League. Consider- ing that this year's team is young and will have many returning next season, it has proven to be the best we've had in some time. The pos- sibility of winning Section or City Championship is very good. The pitching staff consists of Tony Danlow, Larry Jonaitis, Jerry Jones and Eddie Jalowiec. The latter boasts a no-hitter against Engle- wood. Receiving the pitches are Ed Yazumbek and John Bylak. Ray Milszkowski, A1 Sedlacek and Lawrence Jungman operate at first, second and third bases. Captain Bernard Tomicki is at short stop. In the outfield there are George Macuga, Banlow and Jalowiec at left, Buttice at center and Joe Pudlo, Mick Cardilli and Gerald Tkaczyk at right. Soccer (LrodS Seam Cross-Country is slowly but surely becoming one of Tilden's better sports activities. During the past season, the squad led by Co-captains Jerry Wilczak and Warren Rooker retained its enviable record of no defeats in six years of dual meet competition. Victims of the Tech Harriers were Dunbar, Austin, DuSable, and South Shore. Bob Grenda placed seventh in the City Championship run to place the Techmen to a fifth place in the team standings. Due to that old bugaboo of all sports-injuries, the team was not at peak strength for the City Meet. Prospects for next year are very favorable according to Coach Wilke. With Bob Grenda, Ronald Boge, Juan Garcia, Harold Hughes, and Tony Tortorrelli returning, the possibility of achieving a championship for Tilden is highly probable. Boys who have good endurance in running and plenty of fortitude are invited to train with the squad at Sherman Park as soon as the fall term begins. Tilden's 1948 Soccer Team, un- der the direction of Coach Warga and Co-captains Frank Wenstrom and Pete Bonnema had a rugged season. Injuries hampered the team for most of the schedule. Norm Tromel, Ed Leslie and Ralph Ortiz were out a number of games with sprained ankles. Jerry White, high scorer of the team, and Ralph Ortiz made first string on the All-City Team and Jack Ross received an honorable mention. The team will lose the following lettermen: Norm Troemel, Ralph Ortiz, Pete Bonnema, Frank Wen- strom, Lou Patino, Ban Bystrowski, Steve Hash, Richard Sulaski, and Howard Larson. Jerry White, Ed Leslie, Jack Ross and Joe Szyman- ski will return. e . Senior Every year the Track Team grunts and groans to get into condition. Sophomores, Juniors, and even Seniors may join in order to acquire a knowl- edge of wrestling or to participate for the exer- cise. No one is barred who is physically fit. For the first time in fifteen years, Tilden is not the home of the City High School wrestling champions having yielded the title to C. V. S. However the Tech Grapplers entered the Central Amateur Athletic Union, which in Illinois is the biggest wrestling event and captured first place and the team trophy for their yearly contribution to our beautiful showcase. Our lead-off man was 95 pound George Neidel. He placed fourth in the City High School Meet. Charles Anderson, 105 pounds, placed third in open division of the State Amateur Athletic Union. Our 115 pounder, Bob Berkshire, lacked experience but was a credit to Tilden in all of his bouts. Captain Bob Romanowski, last year's 120 pound City Champ met with an accident in the Bloomington meet after winning 12 out of 13 bouts. Bud Weick placed third in the City and State meets and took second in the open division of the Central Amateur Athletic Union. Fred Pearson at 145 pounds annexed the 145 pound City and State High School Champion titles and placed third in the Central Amateur Athletic Union. Bill Weick our 155 pounder, took three titles, City, State, and the Central Amateur Athletic Union Cham- pionships. He is second wrestler in the history of Tilden to win three titles. Ed Mathews, the 165 pound City Champion, placed third in State and took second in the Central Amateur Athletic Union. At the end of the season Ed was elected honorary Captain by his teammates. At 175 pounds was Louie Arends, who placed second in the City and State meets. President GEORGE MACUGA. Vice President AUGUST GHILARDUCCI. Secretary EDWARD FOX, Treasurer Four years ago we entered Tilden as freshmen. To many of us Tilden was not entirely unfamiliar, since brothers, cousins, uncles, fathers, and friends have attended school here. Our first year was a busy one. We became better acquainted with our school, the faculty and the job we had to do. The years passed; as sophomores and then juniors, we approached our goal. We began to realize the importance of our contribution to school life, to accept 1949 responsibility as Tilden students, to wish to excell in all things. Now as seniors we have accomplished our aims and we look forward to applying our experience to the problems of the future. We feel secure in the knowledge that we are prepared to carry on the Tilden Tradition as those others who have graduated before us. 86 RICHARD DONALD ABRAHAMSEN Hallguard. Honor Club. Usher. Secretary anuar 1950 The boys who came to Tilden in the past—the old grads—have all contributed to the pattern of life at Tilden today. Down thru the years each class has added to and made stronger the bonds which unite us. The customs, activities, slogans of one year, have been adopted by succeeding classes, and over a period of time have become dear to our hearts and a permanent part of the Tilden story. And so today, building on the past, creating for the future, we too, are making tradition at Tilden. What we said here, what we did, what was accomplished, won, will endure in the future as a part of the al- ready established tradition enriching our lives and uniting us with our school. 98 EARL ANDERS -Co-Captain of the Sophomore Football Team, Intramural Sports, Hall Guard.
