H gs Students show keen interest in finishing education interrupted by World War II. uferand ' l 0gl Cl,l'Yl Cousellor George Post helps a veteran plan his high school course. TILDEN VETERANS' CENTER Near the close of World War II the Chicago Board of Education organized high school veterans' centers so that students who had left school to join the Arm- ed Services might continue their interrupted educa- tion. Three such centers were opened, one of which was Tilden. The veterans' program is an individualized, ac- celerated program where the veteran works as fast as he can absorb the prescribed material. To estab- lish credit in a subject the veteran is required to take a test given by the Veterans' Testing Service of the Chicago City Iunior College. The final grade re- ceived is the average of the teacher's estimate and the test score. Of 985 Chicago south siders who have returned as veterans to our center, 513 have completed their courses and gone on to college or some other special- ized school.
