1. X31 Mrs. Franklin Delano Roosevelt awards the air medal to Fred Stern for service beyond the line of duty during an attack upon an enemy RF Fred Stern, a Tildenite of the class of 1940, en- tered the Navy, October 5, 1942. After having completed his training as a gunner, he was sent to Natal, Brazil, where he served as tail gunner on a B-24 bomber. Because of an injury received during a practice bombing, Stern was transfered to Iacksonville, Florida for treatment where he passed away Oct. 8. 1944. Stern is one of many ot our former classmates who have been decorated for bravery.
