To gain efficiency the staff is divided into three different groups. the editorial, the business and the advertising. each with its own student head and its own special duties. The editorial staff, selected from members of the journalism class, is responsible for the copy: the advertising staff gets the ads from the neigh- borhood storesg and the business staff sees that the papers are delivered. Besides its regular routine the Times Staff this year put out a special edition for the A. V. A. Conventon and sent delegates to the U. S. P. A. Convention in Milwaukee. Wisconsin. Many capable students will be lost through graduation this month. The edi- torial staff will lose Paul Kosovski, editor-in-chief, and William Gorman, feature editor. The business staff will lose its co-managers, Harry Lotkowski and Tom Moyer, Victor Dunneback, circulation managerg Stanley Kozul, circulation man: Charles Stoffen, bookkeeper and Frank Perkis and Vernon Engle ,student advisors. The advertising staff will lose Raymond Mondeschein. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY For the iirst time in its history, the Honor Club, sponsored by Miss Mildred Lawler. has co-presidents who are Edward Wilkowski and Hans Pladung. Sidney Silvermanand John Danson are the secretaries. The club this year adopted its Hrst constitution which was approved by Miss Dorothy Sass. The National Honor Society is a higher branch of the Honor Club. Seniors with an average of at least ninety and membership in the Senior Council are eligible for this organiation. ET SENIOR COUNCIL This year Tilden's largest Senior Council has been headed by Russel Hagen with William Harkenrider, vice-president and Darrin Gridley, secretary-treasurer. The work of the committees has been unusually active and successful. The Interschool Conference Committee with Richard Wagner as chairman has made contact with many schools for the purpose of studying the activities of other Senior Councils. The Speaker's Committee Headed by John Sullivan arranged for debates at the meetings. The Clean-up Committee in charge of John Nowicki has been cooperating with the C. I. C. in helping to keep the school clean. The Stadium Committee of which Sidney Silverman is chairman has been trying to get the site at 51st Street and Union Avenue for a Stadium. Besides other activities the Senior Council has Completed the Freshman Handbook started last semester. This book is a great improvement over the old one because it can fit in a loose-leaf note-book and new material can be added when- ever necessary. Graduating members of the Senior Council are: A. The work of this club is carried on by delegates representing each session room. Under the able guidance of Sergeant Michael J. Moore, Tilden's R. O. T. C. unit has advanced high in rank in the sixth corps area. Presenting one of the largest units in the city, it has achieved the classification of honor school, To crown its other achievements Tilden's R. O. T. C. unit had the best squad in a city wide squad competition. . O. T. C. Y 1 SOCIAL COMMITTEE The duty of the Social Committee is to see that the Tilden Tech dances are a success. Under the able sponsorship of Mr. Weiner and Mr. Walters, the com- mittee promotes the school socials and senior proms which are held in the large gym. Cooperating with the Tech Boosters Club, the Social Committee promoted the Turkey Hop held at the Hotel Del Prado, November 27, l935 with music by Eddie Cloud. Again aiding the Booster Club the committee climaxed a suc- cessful season with the magnificent Booster Prom at the Trianon Ballroom, January 29, 1936 with music by the idol of the air-lanes, Jan Garber. Working on this principle, the Sign Painters' Club has thrived and grown into one of the most active and industrious clubs in the entire school. This Club has often been praised by Mr. Evans and other civic leaders for the service it has done for Tilden Tech. Mr. F. V. Walters, who originated the club, has guided it for the past twelve years. The method for composing the signs has gradually improved until it has grown from plain paper signs decorated with flat paint to elaborate, electrically iluminated, cardboard signs. The officers of the club merit praise for their unselfish service to the organ- ization. The student advisors, Stanley Kozul and Jim Holliday, both formerly managers, have been of great assistance to the present managers, Charles Klobut- ar and Harold Saltzman. So emcient has been the Work of this organization that here after it will be embodied in the school curriculum and those actively engaged in sign production will be given credit in commercial art. SHAKESPEARE MLLLUICS ATHLETICS I-ETTERMEN'S CLUB Membership in the I.ettermen's Club is the highest sport achievement an ath- lete can obtain. Only team members possesing a major letter are admitted to this organization. The Club this year is headed by Leland Bernbach: 'Glenn Bronson is vice-president, James Concannon, treasurer, and Peter Tamasiunas, sergeant at arms. The graduating class has a big representation in the Lettermen's club. No less than eleven captains, representing seven sports. are graduating. They are Pete Bardy, swimming: Caleb Springs. track: Ed. Brazauskas. football: Jim Sloan and Theodore Vaseff. soccer: Frank Perkis and Cleveland Simmons, Cross coun- try: George Yingling and Art Schmudde, Skating: and John Deksnis and Oscar Simon, Golf. Some of the other outstanding athletes who have letters with at least two bars are Bob Boettcher, Robert Bard, Arvyle Moran, Darrin Gridley, Harry Mak- er, Paul Batka, Harry Baduez, Paul Beckmann, Willard West, James Sheldon and Paul Eller. SL M FOOTBALL Three victories and three defeats is the record of Tilden's gridders for the 1935 season, Hyde Park was the last victim of the Gold and Blue eleven in league play, losing to them by a 7 to O score. Wendell Phillips was the first stumbling block in the Techmen's quest for the sectional championship when they turned in a 13 to 12 victory over the Har- veymen at White City in the league opener on Sept. 28. Both Tilden scores were made by Ed Brazauskas who romped away on a fifty yard run after inter- cepting a pass for the first score and went over again for the second tally on a spinner from the five yard marker. Kelly, a newcomer in the city conference. bowed before the terrific onslaught of Tilden's Yellowjackets by a 33 to O score at White City a week later. Touch- downs were made by Tamasiunas, Fialkowski, Roman, Boettcher and Jankowski. Points after touchdowns were made by Eller, Monkus and Jankowski. Lindblom, l934 all-city champs, were held to a 13 to 13 tie until the last two minutes of the game when a pass carried the oval to Tilden's one yard line. Tilden's forward wall held the champions for three consecutve downs but failed to function on the last play which resulted in a score and a defeat by a 19 to 13 margin. Rose scored Tilden's first when he received a pass from Radewicz and repeated his routine in the last quarter when he scored on a pass from Boettcher. Boettcher plunged across the double stripe for the extra point. Englewood, after getting off to a bad start, came back to hand the Gold and Blue its third and last defeat from league competitors. Englewood led at the begining of the first period but Brazauskas went over for a touchdown early in the second quarter to tie the score at 6 and 6. Monkus scored the final Tech touchdown on a plunge in the third quarter and Kasmar smashed through the line for the extra point. The final score stood Tilden 13. Englewood 19. Tilden's second win came at the expense of Harrison Tech. Playing in a mass of mud at St. Rita Field, the Harveymen succeeded in downing the Grey and Red huskies of Harrison by a 1 to 6 margin. Fernandez crossed the goal for Tilden after recovering a blocked kick to tie up the fracas at 6 and 6. Aron- son put the Techmen in a 7 to 6 lead when he plunged lover the twin stripe for the extra point. Bob Boettcher ran forty yards around his own right end for a score late in the last period to clinch the game. Hyde Park completed the list of Tilden's victims when they went down in defeat before a stubborn Tech eleven by a 7 to 0 score in another mud tossing was made by Brazauskas on a spinner from the two yard marker. Boettcher scored the extra point on an end run. Hirsch High. after challenging the Techsters to a grid battle, went to the locker room suffering from a 7 to 0 defeat at the Techmen's hands. Brazauskas Went over for the only score of the game after Monkus and Boettcher had ad- vanced the oval to the goal line on end runs. Tilden climaxed their football season of 1935 when they met and defeated St. Rita of the Catholic High School League at the 124th Field Artillery by a 7 to 6 score before a crowd ofl 5.000. February graduating members are Moran, Christensen, West. Brazauskas, Boettcher, Pankauskas, Eller, Maker, and Rade- wicz. BASKETBALL Because of a new ruling issued by the Board 'of Education, there wil not be a lightweight and heavyweight basketball team this year. Instead there will be a junior and senior squad. This season the senior team will have a hard time duplicating the work of last year's champions. The only regulars playing are Harry Badeuz and Paul Hintz. Armstrong and Rochnik are two of the promis- ing newcomers along with Joe Zukas this season. Hintz and Badeuz will be lost to the team through graduation in February. ICE SKATING One team Tilden can always depend upon to bring home a trophy is her skating team. Four consecutive seasons have passed without the ice kings failing to take either the junior or senior championship. The city meet last year got off to a good start when Yingling and Moran won first and third in the senior 440 respectively. Zabrocki came through in the mile chase in third place while Capt. Munno and Kempf tied for the fourth position. The half mile grind' found Tilden men in the third and fourth finish- Composed of Art Schmudde, Capt. Munno, Mike Andruch and Yingling. Tilden's relay team placed second in the relay sprint. Skaters lost through the February graduation are Arvyle Moran and Co-captains Art Schmudde and George Yingling. ' SOCCER Due to the fact that only four lettermen returned in September Tilden's soccer team finished third in the Chicago High School Soccer League. The team opened its season by suffering a double setback at the hands of Oak Park by the identical scores of 3-O. The team was routed by Morton by the score of 5-l, then held them to a l-l tie. . Traveling out to suburban towns, the soccer team had better results. They defeated Mooseheart by the score of 3-O, and Batavia by 3-l. The reserves held University High to a l--l tie. In the city league, the team lost twice to the champion, Crane, by the scores of 4-2 and 2-l. They defeated Harrison twice, each time by the score of 1--0. Against Schurz they lost 2-O and tied 0-0. Captain James Sloan, Paul Batka, Vito Rocus and Ray Cmedney will be lost to the team through the February graduation. CROSS COUNTRY The only returning lettermen Coach Hartmann had for the cross-country team were Cleveland Simmons, Frank Perkis, and Tom Woods who won first place in the novice division last year. Perkis and Simmons were elected co-cap- tams. Lane won the city meet held Saturday, November 9, Schurz was second and Crane Tech third. Schwake of Lane won in the time of l0-50, whi'le the first man to finish for Tilden was Woods who ran eighteenth. This was a big upset, because Tilden was given a very good chance to win the city title this year. The co-captains S,immons and Perkis, will be lost to the team through graduation. The track team will lose Captain Caleb Springs, Harvey Hansen. Edward Wilkowski, and Albert Alexander. GOLF Tilden's golf squad got off to a perfect start in defense of their '34 golf title when they defeated Sullivan by a 9 to 3 margin. In their next two contests the Tech golfers hit snags when Morgan Park, turned in a 1 l to l victory over the Gold and Blue putters, while Schurz beat them 10 to 2.
