S I THE SENIOR CLASSIC From the Principal: HE soundest advice I can give you is that you pattern your ideas and fashion your deeds after those of the best teachers and students you have met on your way through this school. Who are these best? I should say they are those who are self-motivated, that is to say those who give to the doing of any work in which they are engaged, a zeal and a loyalty that grows in them and comes from them: no one can generate it except themselves. They move by their own powerg they travel under their own steam. Their highest reward is their own interest and joy in doing things worth doing. Nobody can ever measure the amount, the quantity of this quiet. loyal effort that is given to the work of a school beyond the limits for which there is tangible compensation, but we all know that it is tremendous. l am sure that it is constructive and valuable beyond price or statement and I welcome this opportunity to record my own gratitude for it and to commend most sincerely all those engaged in it. It is, therefore, with full confidence that I recommend to young people the recognition in themselves and the continuous development of this faith- fulness to the best in themselves and in those with whom they associate. Combine this with a faithfulness to the iob itself, a joyous pitching into the doing of whatever there is to be done in the best way you can do it, and an ability to get things going and keep them going until, you reach the place you set out to reach, and you have as reliable a formula as I can think of for making headway in a troubled world. Finally, please remember that our interest in you does not cease with your graduation. The reputation for school is in your keeping for the rest of your lives. We will always be proud of your successes and grieved if misfortune hurts you. Every effort will be made to make your future con- tacts with this school genuine. lf there is any way that any of us can ever be of use to you, do not hesitate to indicate it. You can be assured that we will do what we can. Page Fwe We dedicate this edition of the Senior Classic to MR. THOMAS H. READYOFF . an indefatigable worker in behalf of the Seniors of Tilden High School THE SENIOR CLASSIC VERY LARGE corporation in New York has adopted a one-word slogan for its employees- Thinkl Every man and woman em- ployed there must go through a rigorous training in the work he is expected to do, and the predominant idea throughout the course is Think! The firm occupies several floors in a large office building and on every wall is the sign- Think! Employees are promoted according to the success they achieve in adhering to this slogan- Thinkl What a wonderful world this would be if people would think more! It has occurred to me that this would make an ideal slogan for you, now- Thi'nk! You have completed a four-year high school course. Some of you intend to continue your education in an institution of higher learning. Many of you plan to work as soon as you can get a position. Regardless of what specific commercial abilities you have developed, if you have learned to think-hard and earnestly-you will succeed. Everyone is endowed with the ability to do at least one thing better than anyone else in his city, in his state or perhaps in the whole world. What is your great ability? What is your greatest ambition? Have you thought about it seriously? Have you a plan to fulfill ythat ambition? Have you conferred with others who might help you formulate a plan to work toward that goal? Now is the time for you to consider the matter more seriously than you have ever considered it in your whole life. You have reached one of the great milestones in your life. Complacentl willingness to let destiny bring you what it may is a cowardly admission of resignation to defeat. Think! Form a plan. lt may have to be revised from time to time, but always be sure your aim is perfection and your ideals are high. The success- ful man is the one who is never entirely satisfied with what he has accom- plished and who never ceases to strive to reach perfection in his work and in himself. I do hope you appreciate the free education you have been given during the past twelve years. I hope you appreciate it so much that now, of your own volition, you will continue to improve yourself-in college, in a profes- sion, in business or in private studyl And I hope, furthermore, that you will use this education for a worthy ideal. Love thy God and love thy neighbor. Do nothing to offend either. Do everything you can to make others happier. Think and work to effect such a creed and your life will be crowned with glory and success. THOMAS H. Q .W Q igr xv-fgc Jn r-warfhaw railnar , I-odfzrman THE SENIOR CLASSIC FEBRUARY 1933-IANUARY 1937 Commencement Day is drawing near and is involving us in a host of activities and obligationsg and yet we find ourselves constantly indulging in pleasant reminiscences of our stay at S.T.H.S. Recollections of our first days at Tilden, of our peccadilloes and derelictions, of our failures and suc- cesses crowd through our memories in our last weeks at Alma Mater. How well we recall the mixed emotions that filled our hearts on that eventful day in September i933 when first we became Tildenitesl The school was new, the faculty new, the student body new. We of the class of lanuary '37 missed the traditions and heritages handed down to us by past classes. We missed the traditional rivalry that for twenty-five years existed between Boys' High and Alexander Hamilton: we missed the spirit and color of an Erasmus-Manual football game, we missed the trophy cases gleaming with shining souvenirs of victories of our school's teams. And missing these things, we felt that we had been deprived of a goodly share of high school life. But soon we became aware of compensations for our loss. We awoke to the realization that we were to be the germ from which was to spring a new tradition-a Tilden tradition which would be handed down to future classes to revere and uphold. And we did it! We established traditions in every phase of secondary school life that will be followed by countless numbers of future Tildenites. Scholastically, we have built up a reputation that ranks with that of the best high schools in the city. Future citizens of Alma Mater will have to work hard to sustain that reputation. Socially, we have striven toward the ideal that a Tildenite is a perfect gentleman. , Physically, we have built up a reputable tradition. Our teams in the four years of our stay here. have won championships. Whether successful or not, they have carried the conception of a Tildenite with them. In victory or defeat, they remembered whom they represented and played hard but clean. . lt becomes the duty of the class of February to maintain this glorious heritage that is to be passed on to future Tildenites. In collegiate activities and in our normal life we must not forget that which we wish others to maintain. The principles we have built up in the past four years must be preserved by us. And when we come back ten and twenty years from now to cheer the team playing in the shadow of an ivy-covered building, we will point with pride to the traditions and spirit that we began when Tilden was young. At this point we pause to give thought to that new song hit, Darling, Let's Grow Old Together, which might very well apply to Geometry and some of us, and mostly to this one of us, who's haunted by the ghost of Euclid and the Silly-Science-of-Squares-or- Somepin'. Yes, the Greeks had a word for it, and so have we. But, ahem. we'll suffer in silence and keep our definitions definitely from the public at large. Then we recall those delightful days in Mr. Benov's class, when we were only so high, and oh, such an angel. Of course, we were too young then to know better. Horrors, imagine having finished the course without a single O. Those aforementioned tokens of a Tilden teacher's affection lfor the delany cards, not the students! were never neat and well-formed. Mr. Benov's talents never did tend toward the artistic in such cases. just think of not having to argue with Mr. Abelson, the composite of an entire police force and a watchful sentry, guarding a fortress, as to the merits of going up and around, or taking a pink card--at least if they were gilt-edged we might have considered it .... Of doing a better and better impersonation as time went on of a sardine every lunch period .... Of floun- dering about for a fish story when the time came for our homework in cer- tain subjects .... Of making pleasant friendships, of laughing, crying some- times, but thoroughly loving and enjoying every minute of the time spent at Tilden-and last but not least, the heartache at leaving a school so mod- ern, so beautiful, so smoothly run by teachers who were not only our eudcators but our friends as well, that we could not help hating to leave, and looking forward to coming back lnot we hope, because of some rever- sion of decision by that dreaded Board of Regentsl, but to be just one of the growing Alumni Association .... But, for goodness sake, we don't mean to end on a mournful note . . . we just want to say Adios and Gracias, and Tilden, you're not rid of us yet! 'Snuff said. Realizing that a supper-dance would be more economical for them and their confreres, the boys on the Prom Committee decided to have that type of an affair, rather than a prom. Formal clothing predominated despite the fact that students could wear either formal or semi-formal dress. Tickets were priced at 53.80 per couple. GRADUATION EXERCISES IANUARY 27: DR. The students looked still brighter when after the offi- cial period they all appeared with red carnations. Another bright feature of that hectic day was the Red Letter Hop held in the Girls' Gym that evening. Not reveal- ing the secret they had in store, the Senior Class officers very much surprised the seniors when they were presented with red lollypops at the door. The Tilden Troubadors provided music red, hot and blue. With the final strains of Good Night Sweetheart, came the departure of those who had attended one of the most profitable of the Senior affairs. It was estimated that a profit , of S20 was made. By ED KITOGRAD After endeavoring for four years to estab- lish Tilden in the sports world, sixteen ath- letes find themselves about to be graduated. lt is the purpose of this column to record their respective athletic achievements for their chil- dren and their children's children. Topping the list of sports is football. The loss of john Principe, tackle, who was out dur- ing the year because of a toe operation, and Bernie Wallsh, spunky and hard-fighting end, - during the major part of the season proved to be the most important reasons for an unsuccessful campaign. Only once did a Blue and Cray man cross a goal line. That was in the Far Rockaway game when Bob Olden, after having received a short pass from Marty Erdman, raced 60 yards along the sidelines across the enemy's line. However, the lineman claimed that the runner had stepped out of bounds and disallowed the touchdown. ' Outstanding among the athletes are Bob Olden and Marty Erdman, both of whom ran for Class Athlete. Bob is popularly known around the school as the California Flash because of his feats on the cinder paths. He played football at Los Angeles High before coming here. His ability at snaring passes and his fleetness of foot have proved instrumental in preventing our opponents from running up larger scores than they have done. Ever since he emerged from the novice ranks in the Manual meet of january of last year ia runner breaks his novice when he wins his first medall, he has been pounding the cinders in championship style for the Blue and Gray. ln the same month he was a member of the Brooklyn-Queens championship relay squad and a member of the fifth place team in the National Relay Cham- pionship meet. Marty Erdman, the other half of the Erdman to Olden pass- ing combination, served as a quarterback during the entire season. His accuracy at pass throwing and ability to call plays were exhibited favorably time and again when he helped the eleven on sweeping down-field marches. fContinued on Page 231 Page Twenty one TILDEN HIGH SCHOOL ' ' X MURIEL GLAZER IDA CHAYKIN LEDA SKEBITSKY 4GlURlLS' SPURTS N previous years Girls' sports have gradually been pushed into the the background for what seems to be the more significant curricular of the school. Students have scarcely been aware that among their ranks there exist girls who have the aspirations and qualifications required of good athletes. Lest we forget, let us pause for A moment and reflect on the accomplishments of our own girls who have done so much for their school. About four years ago, in the Annex, several girls banded together to form a basketball team. Since that time, most of them have continued their athletic careers, and as a result have received chevrons, numerals, minor T's, and even major T's for their excellent work. From among the graduates we offer you nine outstanding Amazons to be your disciples. Besides gaining the coveted position of Girl Athlete, lda Chaykin was also elected president of the Girls' Athletic Association lthe office which she later relinquished! . Among the others who have succeeded in making a name for themselves are Muriel Glazer, Leda Skebitsky, Sylvia Bell, Ger- trude Abrams, Edith Hershkowitz, Blanche Kravitz, Sonia Milkman, and Ruth Yudkin. Through the tireless efforts of the entire Health Education Department, a Girls' Athletic Association was formed in both sessions. Its main purpose CContinued on Page 23D Page Twenty-two THE SENIOR CLASSIC BOYS SPURTS QContinued from Page 211 Among the other gridders who hung up their cleats after the traditional jefferson game are: Melvin Wolper, guard, who pulled three ligaments just before the jeff tilt and was therefore unable to play, Dave Nechamen, 190- pound offensive guard and defensive tackle, and Bernie Wallsh, who played at right end before he injured his hand. lsldore Punjab Lipshitz and Lester Baron, the remaining two graduating gridders, played on the jayvee squad. The basketball squad will miss Art Rip Goldman, varsity forward, whose athletic prowess was also displayed through the junior varsity baseball nine. When we had a rifle team in '34, Art was a prominent participant. lrv Pollack is the track team's sole contribution besides Olden to this page. Pollack, who runs in the 440, relay and the high-jump, will culminate a three-year track career this term. Captain Hyman Ciitlin, Francis Andrews and Sidney Krimsky are the graduating members of the soccer squad. Citlin also was a varsity catcher on the championship nine of last semester. By virtue of booting four goals in a six-game season, Andrews is the high-scorer of the soccer eleven. The swimming team will feel the loss of Frank Caputo, Irv Kramer and Isaac Stein, veteran relay and free style merman. All three of them are fifty-yard sprinters and have come in first in their last eleven meets. ...-lil.-TQT. GIRLS' SPORTS CContinued from Page 221 was to induce the girls to join more clubs, and give them a greater appreci- ation of life. The divisions of the G.A.A. are a senior group for the early group for the early session and a junior association for the late session students. The entire organization is divided into the Blue and Gray divisions. Each student belonging to an athletic club automatically becomes a member of either team, according to her grade. This term, the Gray team which consists of students in the even terms, was awarded a silver plaque for receiving the greatest number of points. A chevron is awarded to members of the Basketball Club having at- tended eight weekly meetings. A numeral is awarded to the winning team of the basketball tournament which is usually a round-robin or elimination affair. Minor T's are awarded to those having earned three sets of numer- als. At present the eighth term' team holds the championship record for all four years.
