BOYS TRACK McGladrey, distance runners add strength to spike team With a total of ll meets in the year s schedule the Tigard boys track team added experience and three new school records to their list of accomplishments for a successful year Most Valuable Player Manny McGladrey provided the core of the team Being the only Tigard thinclad to to qualify for the state meet Cin the shot putj Manny led the team to many of their victories Distance runners Dave Santee Neal Beiker and Warren Golden all picked up several points in the running events while McGladrey and Sam Morrison showed the strength in the field events Santee Honorary Captain of the running events was fourth in the district in the 880 and set a new school record in this event McGladrey Honorary Captain of the field events set two new school records Earlier in the year Manny won four events against Oregon City shot put discus javelin and the triple jump in which he set a new school record bettering the old one by three inches Mike Spencer gave Tigard the speed needed to earn points in the shorter races the 100 and 220 Beiker winner of the Ed Stout Memorial Award and voted Most Inspirational was the only Tigard thinclad to place in the mile race Warren Golden a runner in the mile relay was named Most Improved as a sophomore. Boys TENNIS Netters display improvement, surge to Wilco championship Outstanding depth and strong individual match play marked the ll-2 season for the boys tennis team. Led by senior singles players Ron Carey and Bob Bolton, the netters rolled to a second place finish in Wil- co League dual match competition and a stunning first place team finish in the district meet. At district, Carey upset two of the top three ranked players on his way to second place in singles while juniors Kurt Lindner and Bob Jesenik smashed all opposition to become the district doubles champs. Other players compiling excellent records were fresh- man Dave Thomas, sophomore Dave Roberts and junior Craig Wiebe, who each lost only once during the league season, and junior Rob Prince and senior Rick Vander- hoff who lost or11y twice. Hit was the best season ever for the boys squadf' said Coach Bob Skrondal. f'The improvement over last year by all players was incredible. For example, Lindner didn't even make the team as a sophomore and he won the district championship as ajunior. Their only two losses came against Hillsboro and Sherwood. These losses were both avenged later in the year. All season long the Tigers were able to come from be- hind to pull out victory in the late innings. The hitting attack was led by Matt Maleta 64171, Scott Hall 63725, Doug Foster Q357j and Mike McCoy and Jeff Odell C3411 Hall also had four doubles and Steve Hedgepeth and Curtis Grund both connected by home runs Hall who led the team in stolen bases with 22 was named Most Valuable Player Grund had 18 stolen bases and Maleta had 16 to indicate aggressiveness on the base paths Hall was also the leading pitcher for the Tigers with a 5 1 record Mike Stevenson who only played half the season finished at 3 0 and Duane Url had a 4 1 record In addition Grund was named Most Inspirational Player and Jeff Odell and Mike McCoy were Most Im proved GIRLS TRACK Tigard girl thinclads send two to state, post 6 3 mark With a ninth place finish at district and a 6 3 season record it might look like the girls track season was not too successful But look a little further Two girls qualified for state competition two school records were set at the district meet and another was set during the season Lori Loughney a sophomore and Kathy Kinlock a senior both qualified for the state meet Loughney finished second in the distnct meet with a leap of 5 1 in the high jump She finished second in the state meet with a leap of5 6 Kinlock though she finished only fourth in the d1s tnct meet met the qualifying standard for the state meet with her 17 6 in the long jump With an inspired effort she took fourth in state competition Although senior Tracy Crossway didnt qualify for the state meet she was a consistent performer and point getter all season long Crossway broke the school record in Javelin three times finally throwing it 120Vz in the district meet Erin Arnold also set a school record at the district meet flashing 220 yards in 26 5 Arnold consistently picked up points in the dashes and relays and was re warded for her efforts with the Most Valuable Player Award Loughney was named as Most Inspirational by taking fifth in the high Jump at the distnct meet was Most Improved it 124 SPRING SPORTS
