THE CRUCIBLE Special Effects Set Mood For Crucible Changing colored lights and dramatic music established the mood for The Crucible. The drama department'sfirst production of the year, Was an Arthur Miller period piece dealing with the Salem Witch trials in 1692. Leads were Pat Compton, as john Proctor, who fought for the truth about his Wife, and Debi Mayernik, accused of being avvitch. Steve Holgate portrayed judge Hawthorne, Who pre- sided over the trials. Debbie Vaughan played the rival suitor and Mike Kartakwas the deputy governor. Getting the cast totally involved was Drama Coach Larry Daw's biggest concern. The ac- tors spent hours discussing how they Wanted the audience to feel about the character they portrayed, he stated. I-IYSTERICAL CHIIDREN BLAME the witches for their own hidden misdeeds in the woods. 20 In the violent scenes, characters actually hit and slapped one another. Several of the play's costumes were authen- tic. Debi Mayernik and Diane Bunker's dresses were 100 years old. The sets, designed by Daw, Were built in Tigard's Special Education class. Excerpts fr o m several dramatic recordings were edited for the musical background by Phil Hext. VARSITY FOOTBALL Individuals Shine The 1968 Tigers displayed a strong will to win. Hard-fought battles on the gridiron earned them 5 wins and 4 losses. Starting with power, the big Green Machine de- feated a highly-rated Dallas 19-13 at Dallas and then blanked Forest Grove 21-0 at home. The Tigard eleven fell victim their next four games. They dropped a 33-21 decision to West Linng lost to Lake Oswego fthe eventual League Championj 35-14, succumbed 22-6 to Oregon City, followed by a 33-21 loss to the Bears at McMinnville. Determined to end the season on a winning note, the Tigers worked hard to re-establish their running game and to shore-up their defense. This the Tigers did and made a whirlwind finish, winning their last three games in an impressive fash- ion. The fired-up Tigers dropped Tillamook 35-03 swept by Newberg inagreat Homecoming effort42-20, and white-washed St. Helens 20-O in the season's finale. The season ended with Tigard measuring up well to the other teams. Senior Grant Williams ended the season as the No. 1 quarterback in the league and second in the state with touchdown passes thrown. junior Tim Mardock was the league's seventh Top Rusher with 576yards gained. Senior Steve Thornbrue was the league's third Best Punter with a 36.4 yard per kick average. Having a great year, Senior Doug Vaday was the league's Top Receiver with 39 catches for the season Five Tigers were placed on the TYV All-Star Team. Senior Doug Vaday and Junior Tackle Bob Bachelder were named for the first team. Second Team members included Quarterback Grant Williams, Linebacker Don Silvey and Junior Center Fred Pfaffle. Vaday was also honored for his efforts by being se- lected to the OREGONlAN'S second team All-State Squad. Voted the team's Most Inspirational Player and the Best Blocker was Senior Eric Knudsen. Senior Don Silvey received the Top Tackler award and was the team's choice as Most Valuable Football Player. 226
