Ru- mors were that Douglas had s strong team, but Tifton, starting out for another championship proved to be better. The final score read 39-19. Adel, who moved up to Class A this year was everything they turned out to be last year. It was a struggle all the way but the Devils weren't to be defeated YET. The score was I3 to 7 in our favor. Thomasville, behind Jimmy Harper's passing was out to pass them- selves to a victory. But our mighty line and backfield proved different as the Devils brought home a 26-0 victory. M K '44 . Tifton was expected to meet their first real opposi- tion when they met Valdosta. They played a hard- fought game, but Tifton outplayed and outclassed them for a 33-13 victory. After a long trip to Bainbridge the second and third teams played most of the game. There was little competition and the final whistle sounded to the tune of 39-I3 in favor of Tifton. Everyone knew by now The Blue Devils were still championship material and were itching for another crack at the North Georgia Champions. Still keep- ing up their fast pace, Tifton wrecked Americus 51-0. The Blue Devils, without a defeat behind them, journeyed over to Fitzgerald for their final game of season play. The game could have been easily called one of the hardest, if not the hardest fought game of the season by both teams. Pattie Doss ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF 'l'll I'0N F.F.A. 1950-1951 We have a total membership of 63 students. These are farm boys that derive their existence from the soil. The past year we were very proud of one of our students in livestock. This student was Carlton Tyson who showed the Grand Champ- ion Gilt at the Moultrie livestock show. He re- ceived a total of 568.00 in prize money and a blue ribbon for his efforts. We have this year Lewis Cheek who made 160 bushels of corn per acre. He won 525 first prize in the F.F.A. contest sponsored by the Exchange Club. He was followed by James Ivey 115 bu. 2520. Charles Tyson 107 bu. S15. Carlton Tyson 105 bu. S10 and Kennis Lastinger 104 bu. 555. The past year Danny Fletcher set out 5,000 slash pine seedlings. In our shop program we made the following articles: 12 self feeders for swine, 10 self watering barrels, 63 screen windows and doors, 9 wagon bodies, 21 brooders for baby chicks. We have the following boys with a total of F. F. A. BOYS SHOW PROFIT 60 acres in winter pastures. ON FEEDING-OUT PROJECT Two Tifton F. F. A. members came out right well in selling their calves at the Cordele Livestock Auction Market this week both showing good profits from their feeding out projects. Russell Lind- sey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eulen Lindsey of Route 8, sold two calves for 5469.51 with a profit of near S150 on them and Willis Hester, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hester of Wilson avenue in Tifton, sold ' three calves for 5616.00 with a profit of near 5175. The boys started feeding their animals last December on ground corn in the shuck and cottonseed meal with hay and salt as free choice: that is, available for the animals when they wanted it. The animals were top grade and brought prices of 27M to 27112 per pound. Seven members of the local group plan to buy steers in the near fu- ture and start feeding them for the shows and sales to be held next spring. This program ties in nicely for the boys in connection with their corn projects as they can use the manure from the animals for fertilizer on their corn projects and feed 'the corn they raise to the ani- mals for fattening them. With the Hybrid eorns their yields run fron 50 to 100 bushels per acre giving them much of the feed needed to fatten the animals for the show and sale and both tic right in to- gether. In another school she even taught second grade ffor a monthl, general science and biology. Several years she kept all our permanent records, introducing the card sys- tem which took the place of the old book orm. Not only has she been an outstanding and thorough high school teacher, but she has been an instructor in college. She was elected to teach at Waleska Junior college, but mar- ried instead. Later she was elected to teach the regular term at Abraham Baldwin, but refused on account of having to be nearer the children during the day. She had taught at Abac previously two summers and a spring quarter. Her extra curricular activities have been many and varied. She has coached debates, essay writing, plays, speeches of all kinds fgraduation especiallyl, programs of all de- scriptions, helped with junior-senior banquets and parties and served the needs of the school in any other capacity which presented itself. Her students, guided by her skilled instruction in some of the above mentioned activities, have won district and state honors. Our bulletin board in the hall is one of her ideas brought to concrete form with the help of a former vocational agriculture instructor. Guidance is a great hobby of hers. Last year we had Career Day under her super- vision, which was a big affair at T.H.S. in the interest of guidance. There were several distinguished guests from over the state who instructed our students at this time. Mrs. Mitchell seeks to understand boys and girls and is intensely interested in their being able to select the right vocation for life. She dreams of the day when she shall have an adequate guidance program. Appreciation For M rs. Mitchell The journalism class wishes to express its sincere appre- ciation to Mrs. T. A. Mitchell, Jr., for three and one-half years nf devoted service to journalism at Tl-IS. Mrs. Mitchell taught a journalism class at THS to fulfill the Williams, who was the jouma- Mitchell. Miss Williams held work with the Pioneer. By this promise made by Miss Ida Belle lism instructor preceeding Mrs. tryouts for those who wanted to method, she selected the students best qualified for the staff. Miss Williams had promised to start a journalism class the next school term, but she resigned and was unable to fulfill the promise. Mrs. Mitchell was offered the position by Mr. Alton Ellis, who was principal at that time. She accqpted the position because she was interested in helping the students to develop their writ- mg ability. She and the first joumalism class, a group of about fif- teen, increased the niunber of papers from four to eight. They al- so converted the paper to a news paper instead of a feature edi- tion! The goals which Mrs. Mitchell hoped to attain, in cooperation with the journalism class through the Pioneer were service to the community and improvement of the school community. She also tried to publicize happenings at THS in order to keep the commlmity informed of the happenings at the high school, and to stimulate a desire to contribute to the improvements. Mrs. Mitchell said, I also wished to help the students ex- press ideas as clearly, correctly, and as effectively as possible. Mrs. Mitchell's work with the journalism class has not been in vain, for the Pioneer has received a certificate of honorable mention for two years, for maintaining high standards of jour- nalism. These certificates were awarded by the Georgia Scholastic Press Association. Last year Lucy Gay, a member of the journal- ism class, won first prize in the Atlanta Constitution contest for an interview appearing in the Pioneer. Jim Machmer received honorable mention for a book review also appearing in the Pioneer. Last year and this she has been helping Miss Katherine with the speech department. She is hoping some day to see speech taught here as a regular classroom subject. Mrs. Mitchell holds the AB. degree from G.S.C.W. Milledgeville and the M.A. degree from Emory University. She studied French at the Sorbonne in Paris and travelled in Eu- rope. Mr. Mitchell, her husband, is connected with the Georgia Department of Public Safe- ty. They have three very smart and attrac- tive children, two little girls five and six and a son twelve. We are grateful for all the long range plan- ning and visions Mrs. Mitchell has put forth for us as well as the day by day hard work. We wish for ourselves many more of her useful days in our school.
