INDUSTRIAL ARTS Mr. LaCourse feels the goals of the industrial arts program in our school are to help the student to: -gain an understanding of industry and technology. -discover interest and talents. -develop basic skills in the safe use of tools and machines. -make informed and meaningful occupational choices. -acquire interests in avocational pursuits and hobbies. -develop safe working habits. -apply other school subjects. -become a wiser consumer. -develop pride in work well done. -work cooperatively with others, develop techniques in problem solving. There is no question that all students at Ticonderoga could benefit from these goals. Above right: Craig LaCourse. Below right: Ray Lavn-drea. 26

MATHEMATICS ... mathematics is the work horse of society. There are few days that go by that the average person does not use is mathematic ability somehow. People use mathematics in calculating the miles per gallon in their cars, the temperature outside, the amount of fuel burnt, the amount of fuel saved by the insulation they put in their walls, etc. There are few fields today that do not require some ability to do mathematics. Because of the computer age, a person who does not have some mathematical background, limits himself. Almost every phase of society uses mathematics. The person who does not want to get involved in athematics must hire someone to translate his ideas into this very precise language. This can create problems. The person who created the idea must realize that the translator will not see the idea the same way and the result will be somewhat different. In turn, this slows down the creative process. People involved in developing bridges, highways, buildings, and other developments, limit themselves from becoming the best in their field without the ability to apply mathematics to the structures they Want to create. Mathematics allows people to see ideas floating through their minds which are different from those discussed in the classroom. Applying this idea to the environment makes it relative, making mathematics a beautiful tool of life. -Doreen Hills-
