Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1980 volume:

ENTER A NEW DECADE EXPERIENCE A NEW WORLD Our senior year has been one that is full of fun and happiness. Our memories will be carried with us until we meet again. On June 21, 1980 we will graduate, our bodies will leave this school but a part of our hearts will always remain. In the year 2000 this class of nineteen-hundred and eighty will gather on the gounds of the ticonderoga Middle School to unearth the time Capsule which we buried there. On May 30,1975 the Bicenntenial year in Ticonderoga, the Class of 1980 gathered together to bury the Bicenntenial Time Capsule. This event meant so much to all of us because it is something that we, as a class, took part in. Ours, the first graduating class of the eighties considers it an honor to have shared and learned together for the past four years of high school. As students who were born in an age of technology and turmoil we will soon be set free to taste the best experiences of our lives. Nineteen-hundred and eighty, year of Lake Placid Winter Olympics, is one that will forever be etched in the memories of our classmates. One point he stressed when talking about the students and the school was the good morale and the general esprit de corps . He finds a great amount of spirit wherever he sees students, whether they are in the halls or at athletic events. In the first assembly he mentioned this and it seems to be taking effect throughout the school. When questioned about the curriculum, the main point was diversification. With grants from International Paper Co., the High School has been able to install a camputer. The Language Department is strong and growing. Subjects currently offered are French, Spanish, and Latin. With college credit courses made available through NCCC, Ti High has one of the most varied curricula in the area. Another example is the comprehensive writing program which was recently developed in order to meet the needs of the individual student. On the question of staff, Mr. Marks was again very positive. They are hard workers, and they like to take the initiative. he said. He also mentioned the faculty's overall friendliness and willingness to help him in his transition from administrative assistant to Principal. -Roger Wickes, Jon Facteau- Opposite page: Mr Dalton Marks, Principal. By doing so, we feel that we benefit along with the student. We enjoy playing one-on-one with them; hoping in the process to score points. Above left and Right: Bud Bressett. Thus the Resource Center plays a vital role in nurturing the skills of reading observation, listening and social interaction which foster worthy lifelong habits for scholarly and leisurely endeavors. Your recipe consists of dedication, practice, hard work, a desire to be good and enthusiasm ads an extra special taste. It's a fine activity and can be relaxing and beneficial to all of us. -April Nadeau- I feel that home economics is important for all, no matter what you plan for your future. It's important to know how to cook and to have good living conditions. It doesn't matter what your occupation is, home economics benefits all. It aids in learning to relate to people, which is something that is important to us today. -April Nadeau- THINK Above Left: Mike Vigliotti. Many of today's problems are a result of a lack of communication between people. Everyone must learn to communicate effectively in order to avoid misunderstandings. Consequently, a through understanding of the English language is necessary. People must be articulate in both writing and speech so that they can say what they mean and understand exactly what other people mean. No matter how intelligent one may be, no matter how much knowledge one possesses, if the individual can not communicate his ideas to others through language, he becomes a prisoner within himself. FOREIGN AND CLASSICAL LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT . . . when a person is exposed to other people's ways of living, we broaden our perspective on life in general. Through reading, mass media, and travel, the world is becoming smaller; making true communication imperative for peaceful coexistence among nations. When we learn to appreciate another culture's self-expression, we are also made aware of our own language's idiosyncracies. We become more tolerant which helps to break down some of the barriers that are caused by lack of understanding. The avocational values for language study must not be overlooked for a person who understands two languages doubles his her potential as an employee. Learning a language different from our own adds dimension to our personal lives whether the reasons be aesthetic, purely practical, or hopefully both! -Sally May- Opposite page, Top and bottom: Miss Rita Jean Schmidt. He who looks at history loses the sight of one eye. He who doesn't look at history loses sight in both eyes. Mr. Boyce feels that the words of this Russian proverb sums up very well the importance of history in todays world. -April Nadeau 25 INDUSTRIAL ARTS Mr. LaCourse feels the goals of the industrial arts program in our school are to help the student to: -gain an understanding of industry and technology. -discover interest and talents. -develop basic skills in the safe use of tools and machines. -make informed and meaningful occupational choices. -acquire interests in avocational pursuits and hobbies. -develop safe working habits. -apply other school subjects. -become a wiser consumer. -develop pride in work well done. -work cooperatively with others, develop techniques in problem solving. There is no question that all students at Ticonderoga could benefit from these goals. Above right: Craig LaCourse. Below right: Ray Lavn-drea. 26 Above and below: Bill Sola. 27 MATHEMATICS ... mathematics is the work horse of society. There are few days that go by that the average person does not use is mathematic ability somehow. People use mathematics in calculating the miles per gallon in their cars, the temperature outside, the amount of fuel burnt, the amount of fuel saved by the insulation they put in their walls, etc. There are few fields today that do not require some ability to do mathematics. Because of the computer age, a person who does not have some mathematical background, limits himself. Almost every phase of society uses mathematics. The person who does not want to get involved in athematics must hire someone to translate his ideas into this very precise language. This can create problems. The person who created the idea must realize that the translator will not see the idea the same way and the result will be somewhat different. In turn, this slows down the creative process. People involved in developing bridges, highways, buildings, and other developments, limit themselves from becoming the best in their field without the ability to apply mathematics to the structures they Want to create. Mathematics allows people to see ideas floating through their minds which are different from those discussed in the classroom. Applying this idea to the environment makes it relative, making mathematics a beautiful tool of life. -Doreen Hills- Opposite page, Top left: Mr. H.G. Burleigh. Bottom left: Mr. Rick ivtcClintock. Mr. Butler, originally from the Midwest, taught two classes of Regents Chemistry, and one class each of Regents and General Physics during this past school year. The emphasis he places on all his classes is the experience of science, during which it is essential to understand a good approach versus a bad approach, and to be able to collectively comprehend “how things work . As for his role in the student accomplishing this, Mr. Butler places supreme priority on reaching individuals and “opening their awareness to the world around them . This refers to exploration of widely varied perspectives, not just the immediate views that we all tend to adhere to. Young people, Mr. Butler feels, are most adept to this doctrine, since they are approaching decisions of major importance, and tend to be more open minded. According to Mr. Butler, success in understanding science relies on a student's creativity, clearness of thought, ability to make hidden or unseen connections, and, as already mentioned, flexibility of viewpoint. Among the tools of learning, both books and laboratory-type experience are deemed necessary. Although believing students should push themselves to obtain information from books, Mr. Butler strongly emphasizes that usually books do not adequately prove concepts in science; only a laboratory experience provides a convincing proof or disproof of an idea. When asked whether he thinks other tools such as computers and higher math will be integrated into future science courses, Mr. Butler promptly responded, “I certainly hope so. He explained that he is presently striving to do this now, even though such efforts are limited by factors such as the high demand for time on our computer during the school day. He added that he does, however, forsee more computer involvement in possible two or three years. In 15 years Mr. Butler feels that an increase in specialization is likely on the high school level. He personally feels that language study should be emphasized in the earlier grades along with a reasonable amount of diversification. The class of 1980 thanks Mr. Butler for his dedication and wishes him happiness and luck at Ticonderoga in the future. 30 -Joe Paniccia- 31 H TIME TQ BEGIN Seated: C. Upton, M. Woodard, S. Wilson, T. Tl DRAMA CLUB ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE The 1979-80 Drama Club's season saw the growth of the group from timid thespians to skillful and daring dramatists. We closed the '79 season with Inherit the Wind and opened up the 1980 season with a classic about a six-foot rabbit named Harvey . Breaking new ground for the spring, the Drama Club staged Guys and Dolls and sent the audience home with visions of soft-hearted gangsters and gun-snapping chorus girls. Thanks for the support!
