Captain Robert F. Farrington, USN, Commanding Ofiicer, August 1960 Captain Robert F. Farrington was born in Yonkers, N. Y. on July 12, 1914. He attended high school in Watertown, N. Y. and then the Cochran-Bryon Prep School at Annapolis before entering the Naval Academy. He was graduated in June of 1937 and commissioned Ensign. After serving on the USS Mississippi for two years he was assigned to Pensacola Naval Air Station for flight training. Designated a Naval Aviator in April 1940, he reported to Torpedo Squadron-2 aboard the USS Lexington. He was attached to this unit at the outbreak of World War II. With Torpedo Squad- rons 2 and 12 Capt. Farrington saw much action in the Pacihc and was awarded the Navy Cross and Gold Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross and Gold Star. His citations laud him for repeated heroism during various Pacific campaigns. Following a tour of postwar duty in Washington, D. C., Capt. Farrington served aboard the USS Ranger and Wright. He was later assigned to the Chief of Naval Air Training in 1948 and then assumed command of CVG-15 during the Korean Conflict. For his service during Korea, operating from the USS Antietam, he was again decorated. This time receiving the Bronze Star Medal with combat V and the Air Medal and a Gold Star. Between Oct. 9, 1951 and March 17, 1952 he completed 40 missions in the Korean area. Capt. Farrington, who commanded the USS Salisbury Sound before coming to the Ticonderoga, is married to the former Miss Virginia Savage of Fort Smith, Ark. They make their ofiicial residence in Watertown with their three sons: Howard F. II, Richard. and Robert F. Jr.

! Um Qcjbpeza .... Captain Turner F. Caldwell, Jr., USN, Commanding Oflicer September 1959-August 1960 Captain Turner F. Caldwell, Jr., was born in Narbeth, Pa., on Nov. 17, 1913. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1935 and was assigned to flight training at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla., two years later after serving tours aboard the USS Saratoga and USS Hull. He received his Naval Aviator's wing in 1938. Capt. Caldwell served in Scouting Squadron-5 aboard the first USS Yorktown until the unit was decom- missioned in 1942. In 1944 and '45 he commissioned and commanded the Navy's first night carrier air group, CVGL-N-41 on the USS Independence. Postwar assignments include tours with the Bureau of Aeronautics, USS F.D. Roosevelt, Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Md. g Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe CSHAPED in Paris, and the Office of Chief of Naval Operations. He also attended the ,National War College, Washington, D.C., in 1955 and '56. Before taking command of T iconderoga in September of 1959, Capt. Caldwell was skipper of the USS Valcour. He was relieved as C. O. of Ticonderoga in August of this year. His present duties are with the Chief of Naval Operations. - Capt. Caldwell held the world speed record for a short time in 1947. He is also the first Naval Aviator to fly at supersonic speeds. He is married to the former Miss Helen Glidden of San Diego. They have four children: Marcia, 16, Turner F. IH, 11 g Denise, 7 3 and Jeremy, 5. They now reside in McLean, Va.

O O O Captain John R. Mayher, USN, Executive Officer Captain John R. Mayher was born in Omaha, Neb. He attended college at Omaha University and also Baker Uni- versity in Baldwin City, Kan. Entering the Navy in January of 1941 under the Naval Air Cadet program, he was commissined Ensign and des- ignated a Naval Aviator six months later. Capt. Mayher served with Composite Squadron-4 during World War II where he saw duty as Operations Oihcer and Executive Oflicer. He was also leader of the Hghter component of the unit. In 1946 he was ordered to the Naval Air Reserve Training Command at Glenview Ill., where he served as CV Training Oilicer. After three years in that billet he received duty under instruction at Combat Intelligence Center School at Glenview for four months. . At the conclusion of this training Capt. Mayher was sent to Fleet Air Wing Training Unit Pacific as CIC Officer and Oflicer-in-Charge of Air Control School and also as a VF pilot. ln January of 1952 he reported to General Line School at Monterey, Calif., for the 12-month course there. He later, served as the Naval Liaison Oilicer for the Air Force's Tactical Air Command. Capt. Mayher is married to the former Miss Gloria J. Vaughan of Lake Forest, Ill. They have three sons, John Jr. Herbert and Peter. He was promoted to his present rank of captain shortly before being relieved as Executive Officer of Ticonderoga in July of this year. 6 s
