Second: Civil War Steam Sloop I X? The second TICONDEROGA was a wooden hulled steam sloop-of-war, launched on October 16,1882. She had a length of 237 feet and displacement of 1863-1881 2,500 tons. She was the first United Sates steam warship to circumnavigate the STEAM SLOOP globe, leaving Hampton Roads, Virginia, on December 7,1887, on a special commercial and exploring mission. She reached San Francisco on September 1 1,1880. Third: World War I Freighter Sunk by U-Boat The third TICONDEROGA was a steel freighter named SS Camilla Rickmer, built in Germany in 1914 and was recommissioned and renamed by the United States as a Naval Overseas Transportation Ship in 1918. She was 401 feet long and dis- X placed 5,130 tons. The ship was operating in a convoy, carrying Army supplies to France in September 1918 when she was attacked by the German submarine U- 1917-1918 152. Though the crew fought valiantly with it's limited weaponry, the submarines TRANSPORT gunfire and torpedoes sank the ship. Of the 240 men aboard, two were taken pris- oner and only 20 ' were saved. Q! 1944-1973 AI RCRA'-:T CARR' El! The fourth TICONDEROGA CCV 14D was commissioned ' in May 1944. The aircraft carrier was 388 feet long and displaced 36,380 tons. She carried 360 officers and 3,888 I men. From her commissioning until January 1945, TICONDEROGA fought in assaults on the Philippine Islands, in Leyte Gulf operations and in Formosa, Luzon, and China attacks. On January 21, 1945, TICONDEROGA was off Formosa when attacked without warning by a Japanese suicide plane which crashed through her flight deck abreast of the number two 5-inch gun mount. The bomb the kamikazes carried exploded just above the hangar deck, setting fire to many planes and killing or severely wounding 100 men. The crew fought the fire as determinedly as they fought the enemy. Captain Dixie Kiefer skillfully maneuvered the ship to prevent the wind from aiding the fire and listed the ship to port to carry the fire overboard. Smoke rising from the stricken carrier attracted other kamikazes, and while three were downed by the carrieris gunners, another struck the carrier near the island, killing or wounding another 100 men. Captain Kiefer was among the severely wounded. The crew, however, managed to put out the fires and sailed the ship to safety. The ship was repaired and renovated at Puget Sound, Washington, and by April 10, 1945 was back in service, continuing to see front-line action until the end of the war. In 1952, TICONDEROGA received major modifications to allow launching of jet aircraft and in 1956 had an angled deck installed. She subsequently earned the Armed Forces Expeditionary medals for action in Taiwan, Laos, Quemoy, and Vietnam as an attack carrier. H In 1972, TICONDEROGA participated in the recovery of the Apollo 16 moon mission capsule and astronauts near American Samoa, and later that year recovered the astronauts from Apollo 17. She was decommissioned on September 1, 1973, having received five battle stars during World War II and three Navy Unit Commendations, one Meritorious Commendation and 12 battle stars during Vietnam War. 3 Fourth: Aircraft Carrier, World War II to Apollo Recov-
