The fort, which today stands restored near the town of Ticonderoga, was first built in 1755 by the French. They called it Carillon from the bell-like sound of the waters. When the English captured it in 1759 they changed it's name to Fort Ticondero ga. In the revolutionary period, the entire area became a battlefield.
