On a modern warship such as USS TICONDEROGA, personnel responsible for the safe navigation of the ship are the Quarter- masters QQMJ. Quartermasters, use both ancient but time-tested instruments as well as some of the most sophisticated electronic systems BVEIII' able today. Underway a Quartermaster will stand watches on the bridge as the assistant to the officer of the deck for establishing the posi- tion of the ship and informing him of any haz' ards on the ship's route. Quartermasters are also involved with many shipboard evolutions: navi- gation details, anchoring evolutions, unrep evo- lutions, naval gunfire support exercises and all other evolutions where navigations is an element of success. Radio Central and the Signal Bridge have continually met the challenge of com- municating under highly intense and difficult envi- ronments. The capabilities of the Radiomen and the Signalmen were first put to the test upon ar- rival in the MED as they took on the ambitious task of Communications Ship for the MED in support of CTF 60. During this two month period, Radio Central was aptly supervised by RMC Ingram, RM1 Rivera, and RM1 Santiago as they were also given the extra duty of REDCROWN in the Adriatic Sea. For the Signal Bridge, exercises Destined Glory and Tridente demanded continuous visual commu- nications with foreign navies. Both communica- tions watch teams proved time and time again their importance to the ship and its ability to get the job done. By successfully completing their mis- WW. Y i - z nk k ff'-.N sions and demonstrating an extremely quick re- sponse during their White Pinnacle exercise, OC Division helped TICONDEROGA shine throughout JTF-95 and live up to the title First AEGIS Cruiser . The job that Gunner's mates are tasked with are some of the most interesting and challenging in the Navy today. Leadership, reliability and top quality performance are required of all the GUN- NERS . Gunner's mates are responsible for keeping TICONDEROGA on the cutting edge of performance by ensuring their big guns and the missile launcher fire on demand during naval gunfire support and na- val missile exercises. The Gunners also instruct ship- board personnel in all aspects of small arms qualifica- tions. Gunner's mates maintain the ship's primary weapons systems, the MK 45 5 inch! 54 Gun Mount and the MK 26 Guided Missile Launching System both of which are capable of shooting surface and air tar- gets. It is fair to say that Without the Gunners and their weapons systems that the TICONDEROGA would have no reason for getting underway!
