CAPTAIN EDWARD F. MESSINA Captain Edward F. Messina was born in194O in Somerville, Massachusetts, and grew up in North Miami, Florida. He joined the Navy in 1958 and served as a Terrier Missile Tech- nician in USS SPRINGFIELD tCLG7j homeported in Ville- tranche Sur Mer, France until his selection as a candidate for the Naval Enlisted Scientific Education Program QNESEPJ in 1962. He attended the University of North Carolina, graduat- ing in 1966 with Bachelor Degrees in Mathematics and French. He was commissioned an Ensign upon completion of Officer Candidate School in December 1966. After commissioning, he served in USS BOSTON QCAGU first as Missile Repair Officer and later as Assistant Navigator. ln April 1969 he reported to USS LUCE QDLG 7j as Fire Con- trol Officer. From May 1970 to May 1971 he served on the staff of Naval Forces Vietnam. After Italian language study at the Foreign Service Institute he served from September 1971 to January 1974 with the Italian Navy as Officer in Charge of Personnel Exchange Program Detachment, Taranto, Italy. He graduated from the Extension Division of the University of Arkansas with a Master of Arts degree in International Rela- tions in 1973. In September 1974, Captain Messina graduated from Naval Destroyer School and reported to USS BELKNAP fCG 26j as Weapons Officer. From May 1976 to September 1977 he served as Weapons Officer in USS HARRY E. YARNELL QCG 17j. Following graduation from the French Language course at the Defense Language Institute, Captain Messina attended the French Naval War College, Paris, France from September 1978 to December 1979. . Captain Messina served as Executive Officer in USS JOU- E1'I' QCG 29y from March 1980 to September 1981. In October 1981, he reported to the Precommissioning Detail, USS NEW JERSEY QBB 621, serving as Weapons Officer until June 1984. Captain Messina commanded USS HAYLER QDD 997j from May 1985 to June 1987, circumnavigating South Ameri- ca as Flagship for U.S. Commander South Atlantic Force dur- ing UNITAS XXVII. Captain Messina graduated from Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island in June 1988 with a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies. He graduated from Salve Regina University with a Master of Sci- ence in Management in June 1988. Captain MEssina served as Assistant Chief of Stafffor Readiness Assessment and Training Policy QNGJ in the Staff of Commander, Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet from July 1988 to April 1991. Cap- tain Messina assumed command of USS TICONDEROGA QCG 47, in June 1991. Captain Messina's personal decorations include the Bronze Star with Combat the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V and gold star, and the Combat Action Ribbon. . its W 7 Captain Messina is married to the former Josette Sebas- tiani of Nice, France. They have a son Pascal, and reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER BIOGRAPHY Lieutenant Commander Steven C. Miller, originally from Joplin, Missouri, received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1979. Upon commissioning, Lieutenant Commander Miller served in USS GOLDSBOROUGH QDDG 20, as Communications Officer, Auxiiiaries Officer, and Damage Control Assistant. Following his Division Officer tours in USS GOLDSBOR- OUGH, Lieutenant Commander Miller was assigned to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as Executive Secre- tary for Joint Chiefs of Staff Affairs. Lieutenant Commander LIEUTENANT COMMANDER STEVEN C. MILLER Miller later served as Operations Officer in USS BARBEY QFF 1088y and as the commissioning Operations Officer in USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN QCG 571. Lieutenant Commander Miller reported as Executive Officer in USS TICONDEROGA QCG 47y in May 1990 and served during two deployments in Operation DESERT SHIELDXDESERT STORM. He reported as Flag Secretary to Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet in April 1992. Personal decorations worn by Lieutenant Commander Miller are the Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star in lieu of fourth award and the Navy Achievement Medal. Lieutenant Commander Miller and his wife, Nicole F. J. Toesca, reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
