ff SHIP'S INSIGNIA sYMBoL1sM i ii Emblazoned on an oval of Navy blue, encircled by a chain of golden links, TICONDEROGA'S insignia unites the past and future in a unique combination V of heraldry and promise. Q 1 1 SHIELD The sumbols on the shield present a history of the name TICONDEROGA and of the four ships which have borne that name. 'CTICONDEROGAH comes from the Iroquois Indian word meaning 'cbetween two waters and is symbolized by the I white band dividing the blue lower half of the shield. Four dark blue stars 35 represent the four ships which have previously worn the name TICONDEROGA. li The historical capture of Fort Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War is I commemorated by the embattled partition line, above it, the gold lion on a red field signifies our British adversary. The motto 'CFIRST AEGIS CRUISER if J emphasizes the significance of the new combat system and of the ship which 1 carries it. 4 CREST j ' The AEGIS Weapon System, a new dimension in surface ship combat systems, has as its motto Shield of the Fleet and is symbolized by the blue shield J of a shape distinctive to the AEGIS system. The single gold star represents CG-47, the fifth ship to bear the name TICONDEROGA and the first combatant to carry the shield to sea. The spears extending from the shield reflect TlCONDEROGA'S mighty offensive armament capabilities and unparalled fire- Q power which permit her to operate in a multi-threat environment and take on , any air, surface and subsurface targets which the Battle Group might CIICOUIIICT.
