Q 1 1 SHIELD The sumbols on the shield present a history of the name TICONDEROGA and of the four ships which have borne that name. 'CTICONDEROGAH comes from the Iroquois Indian word meaning 'cbetween two waters and is symbolized by the I white band dividing the blue lower half of the shield. Four dark blue stars 35 represent the four ships which have previously worn the name TICONDEROGA. li The historical capture of Fort Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War is I commemorated by the embattled partition line, above it, the gold lion on a red field signifies our British adversary. The motto 'CFIRST AEGIS CRUISER if J emphasizes the significance of the new combat system and of the ship which 1 carries it. 4 CREST j ' The AEGIS Weapon System, a new dimension in surface ship combat systems, has as its motto Shield of the Fleet and is symbolized by the blue shield J of a shape distinctive to the AEGIS system. The single gold star represents CG-47, the fifth ship to bear the name TICONDEROGA and the first combatant to carry the shield to sea. The spears extending from the shield reflect TlCONDEROGA'S mighty offensive armament capabilities and unparalled fire- Q power which permit her to operate in a multi-threat environment and take on , any air, surface and subsurface targets which the Battle Group might CIICOUIIICT. CGMMANDI G CAPTAIN GFFICER ROLAND G. GUILBAULT, USN To all Ticonderogamen, This cruisebook is dedicated to you and your families. It covers the birth of TICCN- DERGGA, highlights her first nine months of operations and attempts to capture some of the experiences of her first deployment. It reflects, I trust, the professionalism, character, toughness, humanity, spirit, good naturedness and dedication which I see everyday in you. It is a book of a fantastically capable ship on her maiden extended voyage and of her proud and professional crew. It covers the real world operational commitments we met off Lebanon, where TICONDEROGA fired her guns, while touching on the lighthearted side of shipboard life and the educational events encountered in our port visits. It shows our homecoming and the fantastic support and enthusiasm of our families. Finally, it provides tangible evidence of TICONDEROGA's unique and splendid personality which you have created and of which I am proud to be a part. Q! R.G. GUILBAULT CAPTAIN USN 1, . The aft superstructure is shown during fabri- cation at upper right. Each module was built seperately, once the 3 sections of the hull at rightwere completed they were carefully aligned and welded together, later 2 superstructure modules were added. Other pictures on this page show the ship after painting. Dozens of railroad Htrucksv, shown at bottom right, were used to move the ship 'en masse' several hundred yards over land to the launch pontoon, where the ship was intro- duced to her natural element for the first time, then towed to the christening dock. Thisjourney took place on 25 April 1981 and is shown in a sequence of 3 pictures next page. 6 weeks later, on 16 May 1981, Mrs. Nancy Reagan broke the traditional bottle of champagne on the bow to christen this mighty warship. Final construction and out- fitting moved into high gear in early 1982, when the SPY radar faces were installed, and an extensive test and check-out effort began as crewmembers and contractors worked hand-in-glove to bring the hull to life. Tico,' put to sea in May 1982 on the first of 3 sea trials, Trial Alpha stringently tested and proved the propulsion systems as we maneuvered at over 30 knots during a four hour full-power speed run. Emphasis then shifted to the combat systems, because plans for Trial Bravo in August would have us firing every weapons system on board. Witness the list of dignataries who came to pay court to Tico : Secretary of Defense Casper W. Weinberger, Senator John Stennisg Admiral James D. Watkins, Chief of Naval Operation, Admiral Wesley L. McDonald, Commander in Chief U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Vice Admiral Edward S. Briggs, Commander Naval Surface Forces Atlantic, Rear Admiral Richard C. Berry, Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group Eight, Rear Admiral Wayne E. Meyer, Aegis Shipbuilding Project Manager, and Mr. Leonard Erb, President of Ingalls Shipbuilding. But to all the people who worked and slaved months, even years, in a labor of love to bring this ship to life, commissioning was the fruition of a dream, a dream born in the fertile minds of architects and engineers, wet- nursed by the experienced craftsmen of Ingalls shipyard, and finally weaned by the Navy professionals who streamed on board during the impressive come alive ceremony. Thus TICONDER- OGA was commissioned, and the thousands of family, friends and co-workers who shared this day with us will long remember the exultant shout of 331 plankowners as we claimed her as our own: TICONDEROGA ! 7 2 Z f . , V, Z if 2 ff 1? ENC Atkins 8: SH2 Alexander waiting to see Cathy Lee Cathy Lee Crosby 8: Bob Hope on USS New fersey O n 2 4 D e - cember 1983 Bob Hope and a bevy of beauties enter- tained 1000s of marines and sail- ors on board USS New Jersey. After the show we pulled alongside the bat- tleship to wish a T i c o n d e r o g a Christmas to Bob 84 Cathy Lee Crosby, who talked about the encounter in One Woman magazine: . . . Well, at the beginning of the trip Cto Lebanonj I received a message from the Ticonderoga . . . and we kept trading messages. And it became funny I would say, Please rescue me, I'm being held in servi- tude on the Guam. And they would write back, Res- cue is on the way. It got to be a game, with two or three messages going back and forth every day. Toward the end of the trip I was standing on the battleship New Jersey after our show, and the Com- manding Officer told me to come to the side of the ship. Well there was the Ticonderoga, which is about 550 feet long, and all the men were lining the ship, and they had a big huge banner on the side of the ship that said 'WE WANT CATHY LEE'. They said, What do you want for Christmas'?,' And all the guys were chanting Cathy Lee! Cathy Lee! Cathy Lee!!! And two F-14s were doing a fancy air show . . . the planes were dancing and twirling, and the sound was deafening. It was really wonderful! They sent me gifts and everything. The ship is the most advanced cruiser in the world, and can move with unbelievable speed. 87 Z Y PRAM ,,,, ,,, V F- ,- 4 ,, , ,, ,,,.:,,.,.,',,g,, ,t,.,..V V: gurz, 44--.1,rg:,-w.51,:gQf7:Tn ,.,1.f.f1-5-.-..?-wi--7.-nv-fywrnm N N. 41 W4 r--ff Z Z 9 4, X 7 Z 4 Wir it , , X fir A if 24 W 49 4 4...,v-rvy.,,,.-M-,,.,....,.V.,.., , -f ,Vx . a ' A ,- . , an , +532 5,4 Q .- g :X X xx s 1 Q R Q x- .Q ln' ix x Wx' xx Q X S-3 . x N 5X x X X- aw FTMC Bayan, ETI O,Donnell, HMI Blair, GMG2 Williams, QMI Hill, STGI Tuggle, FTG2 Heitz, MSI PETOSKY, MSI Elmore, ICI Lung, GSE3 Rolon, YN3 Toranto, STG2 Smith, YN3 Searby, STG2 Powell, CTI2 Baird, GSM2 Kaiser QM1 Kllpp STG2 Ortiz MSI Putosky ICI Lung GSE3 Rolon YN3 Bong Bong, Bong Bong' Searby YN3 Toranto STG2 Smith GSM2 Kaiser CTI2 B d RMSN L p santa Claus ARRIVING MSC Whalen fight at up P , .-.gnaig Here, in the year 72 Q AD, 960 Jewish heros committed suicide rather than surrender to the massive Roman army camped below. It is a religious capital for half of the human race. To the Church of the Virgin Mary 8a statue of S. Hieronymus Jews it is the symbol of their past glories and their hope for the future.
