Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky. When the blazing sun is set, And the grass with dew is wet, Then you show your little light, Twinkle, twinkle, all the night. Then the traveler in the dark Thanks you for your tiny spark, He could not see where to go If you did not twinkle so. In the dark blue sky you keep, And often through my curtains peep, For you never shut your eye Till the sun is in the sky. As your bright and tiny spark Lights the traveler in the dark, Though I know not what you are, Twinkle, twinkle, little star. They came in a surprising third place finish in district and finished 17th in the state meet. This years team was headed by Seniors Tom Nash, Jim Christian, and Dave Stephens. The season record was 16-5. Girls came upon the scene this year after two years of hiding. They were progressing well until happenings late in the season pro¬ duced an imcomplete team at dis¬ trict and they had no qualifying place or score. Many outstanding performances highlighted the year as Sandy Lister broke two school records, beam 7.35 and floor 8.3; Terry Cronk broke three records, floor 8.5, P- bars 7.3, and rings 7.2; Gale Rodgers broke the highbar record with a score of 7.8; Doug Suter also broke a record, on the side horse with a 7.2 score; and last, Gregg Hervey broke the All-around record with a 43.6. The biggest moment for the mens’ team was when two members qualified for state, Doug Suter on side horse and Terry Cronk on floor. At state competition, Terry Cronk took 7th place on floor. Summing it all up, the year was good, and with many returning gymnasts, next year should be just as good. ■H T 1 i ■ ■ 'np 1 Scores Willamette University 0 Oregon College of Education 1 Shorecrest 2 Oregon College if Education 0 Shorecrest 1 Roseburg 3 Mapleton 4 OPP 7 3 0 0 2 1 0 1 Fillies “ Stick ” it out together Back row (L-R): Donna Dial, Robin Yates, Kelly Mason, Judy Morris, Theresa Appling, Carla Dearing, Susan Davis, Chris Dimarco. Work Experience The Work Experience club is sponsored by the state for seniors in high school who are interested in a field of work. Mr. Canning has been involved for five years helping students get jobs in which they are interested. The businesses of the community hire these students, and then they start their way towards a career. There are many job clusters to choose from; business, mechanics, electronics, office work, etc. The students get paid minimum wage, and work approximately three hours a day. Those hours come from early release from school. The students get two credits towards graduation, because they are missing two pe¬ riods of school. There is an average of 25 students in one cluster any given year. This year there were around 40 students involved in Work Experience. Some of the jobs that students are working in are; T. V. repair shops, garages, lawyers offices, banks, hospitals, and office work. An average of half the students keep their jobs permanent¬ ly. Only seniors are allotted to join Work Experience, because they have had more training towards their desired job. If interested, stu¬ dents should start training in their sophomore year so that chances will be high to work in their desired occupation. As far as possible without surrender be on terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter ; for always there will be greater and lesser per¬ sons than yourself. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misforture. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and lonliness. Beyond a wholesome discipliiie, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. Be at peace with God; whatever you conceive him to be; and whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its shame, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. But now, as every man, woman, and child in our country uses the equivalent of a 100-foot tree every year, the products from our forests come in a variety of forms. Our wood and wood fiber are glued and pressed into many building materials — from pulp come paper and packag¬ ing, melamine, film, fabrics and food extenders. Then there’s energy, in the form of compressed fireplace logs and charcoal. Using the squeal? We get close, because even manufacturing scraps are used to generate energy — and the scraps are called “hog fuel.” _ A Weyerhaeuser The Tree Growing Company ADS ADS ADS ADS ADS ADS 227 ■■■■ United States National Bank of Oregon Where Banking is A Very Personal Thing U BANK Springfield Branch 437 Main St. 687-7855 Mohawk-Northgate Branch £620 Mohawk Blvd. 687-7865 Flintridge Lumber Sales, Inc.
