A little more than two years ago. in the fall of 1956, the Thurston Seahorses made their first plunge into high school swim- ming competition. Much progress has been achieved in this short span. as the team rose steadily from an almost winless first season to a record of eleven wins against only six defeats for the current 1958-59 Kowd. year. oegeiq Several of this yearls team members have 0 been on the squad for two or three seasons. and their team loyalty. persistent training, and experience have enabled Thurston to emerge as one of the strong contenders in Class A swimming competition. To these veterans have been added several promising new members. adding depth to the squad and assuring Thurston of good teams in the seasons to come. Outstanding individual team members, each of whom has broken or tied previous school records, include Co-Captain Ron Roberts fbreast- stroke, l:l1.2lg Tim Treacy fbackstroke. l:05lg and Bob Keller f50- yard freestyle. 0:25.5l. In the medley relay team. composed of Tim Treacy fbackstrokel, Ron Roberts fbreaststrokel. Mike Zinn fbutterflyl, and Bob Keller ffreestylel, a new record of 1:54-.7 was established, enabling all of them to qualify for the State Class A Finals at Michigan State University in March. Ron Roberts and Tim Treacy also have qualified to compete in the State Finals in their individual events. The 200-yard freestyle relay team, composed of Co-Captain Tom Kurtz. Dennis Armstrong, Bruce Robison, and Bob Keller, also set a new school record, with a time of 1:414.7. Coach Joe Mracnais fine leadership has been a major factor in this year's successful season.

BA KETBALL In 1891, a member of the Young Menis Christian Association Train- ing School fYMCAl, created in Springfield, Massachusetts, the game of basketball with a very definite purpose in mind. It was to give young men a chance to participate in an indoor game during the winter when it was not possible to use the outdoor fields for such sports as foot- ball, tennis and golf. In the 68 years since, it is still serving that purpose, and gives Thur- stonites here, a chance to carry on with the same competitive spirit that holds them in the fall with football. Lenny wins the jumpall. While we have not had a very outstanding season this year. it has proved to be better than all previous years. Activity this year was spurred on by the Hpress-hailedi' combination of HMutt and Jefff, junior, Dick Jones. and senior, Lenny Wozniak, respectively. Both boys averaged a total of at least -- points per game each. lf. though, they hadnlt been backed up by the remaining members of the squad, who likewise did a fine job, the totals would have not been possible. It all goes to prove the importance of teamwork exercised by all players wearing an Eagle uniform. Dick Jones eludes the opponent.
