OUR EX PEC TA TIONS We graduates owe a debt to the past for the ground on which we build is an inheritance that has come down to us through the sacrifices of the found ers of this country We owe a debt to science invention art 1n fact to the pioneers of every age and every struggle in America whom we see embodied 1h our parents and teachers today Yes the debit side of the page is staggering we begin to balance the bud get by making our first entry on the credit side Write it in big letters Our Expectations We like the word Expectation We like it better than Hope Hope is nec essary but to us hope 1S only a little more than wishful thinking But as It has often been said Expectations embodies hope and faith hope that It can be done faith that it will be done We learned in the Bible that faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen So to clear our debt to the pastwe must have something substantial Faith is substance but faith without works 1S death So to substantiate faith we must work Perhaps we may not always seem to be eager beavers exactly but I m sure we will all be in there p1tch1ng We have the greatest opportunity ever offered to a group of young people but in this atomic age we face greater responsibilities than have ever been faced before We are sailing out in unchartered seas seas of problems problems that cannot be solved by love and Justice and understanding We are going to have to developa greater love for mankind a larger grasp on the question of fairness to all people adeeper understanding of the problems of a shrinking world Perhaps these are high sounding words but please don t consider them me rely the efflorescence of youth these ideals may be beyond our grasp but as Browning says A man s reach must exceed his grasp or what s a heaven for We shall suceed- the world will move forward on the feet of youth- its burdens will be carried on youthful shoulders We believe with Fmerson- So near is grandeur to the dust- So near is God to man When duty whispers low Thou Must Then youth replies I can Class of 50 QQQ QBQBQ 6
