The Life Skills program was an experimental course co- ordinated by Life Skills Coaches, Chris Puddicombe and Birgit Neuburger. It was sponsored by a federal grant. The course was designed to benefit those students unable to adjust to the existing educational system. Honestly and openly sharing common in- dividual problems has been the key to the success of the Life Skills Program. Sheila Rhodes, in the Guidance Office comes to know each student personally and even provides first aid, whenever, necessary. More than students and staff are needed in order that TISS function effectively. In the library we have three library aides, Mrs. Ruth Taylor (upper left), a Library aide, Mrs. Polly Marhle (upper right), our audio visual aide, and Mrs. Audrey White also a library aide. Mrs. Shirley Jackson, (lower right) works part time, in the main office. All three ladies can be found giving helpful assistance to both the students and staff at TISS. In the halls, Cafeteria and Library, too Our fine staff of custodians consists of both a night shift and a day shift. All the custodians except one are male. Mrs. Edna Elliot is the lady who along with the men helps keep TISS maintained and in good repair. FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Gilmer, Mr. Hutt, Mr. Moffitt, Mr. Shields. The ladies in the cafeteria are also very important to the health and welfare of TISS. Gladys Giffin, Helen Bullridge, Betty Murphy, and Joan Kelso provide all those delicious meals that get us through the many hours of school. Our compliments to the Chefs. So long Shorty! On Dec. 15, 1978 T.I.S.S. lost a very dear friend. Shorty Gilberds after 21 years with the Leeds Board of Education retired. Shorty will be dearly missed. His good nature and ability to deal with people made him well loved by both staff and students. Shorty will never forget T.I.S.S. and certainly T.I.S.S. will never forget Shorty. Good bye Shorty! Thanks for everything. f See ya later sweetie! Shorty and Arlie k ' 79 UNDERGRADS Years of Importance Years 1, 2 and 3 are a time of discovery at T.I.S.S., as we become aware of ourselves, our feelings and the opportunities open to us. Its purpose is to allow those students interested in photography to develop their skills. They have accomplished a lot this year including, supplying Yearbook photos, the photo contest, and developing 2,000 photos. MATH CLUBS This year T.I.S.S. mathematicians once more proved they are the best. The Junior math contest saw T.I.S.S. place first among the seven Leeds and Grenville schools in competition. T.I.S.S. also had three of it ' s students place in the top 10% of all contestants in CANADA! Not to be outdone the T.I.S.S. MM OUR FRIEND FROM MEXICO Meeting Armida and hosting her in my home is an experience I shall never forget. It ' s an unusual feeling to adopt a person from another culture who speaks a different language and thinks in different ways. I realized that ours is not the only way of life in this world. It ' s frightening, however, to think that I may never see her again. Through the year we have ex- perienced and shared much together. I will miss her very much. Heather Franklin P.S. I am invited to her wedding, so Armida and Fredrico - see you in 1984. I feel that coming to Canada has helped me to realize that there is a whole other world out there. There were times that I wished to be home with my family and friends, but I will never regret coming to Canada. Heather has become a very close friend and introduced me to many new friends and traditions. We fought, laughed and cried but the things I have learned are friendship, and ENGLISH (some bad words too!). Thanks, T.I.S.S. Armida Cesar Saldivar Editor ' s Message The Yearbook, a year-long com- mittment on the part of its members, has once more come to a happy end. Many people put in many hours to complete it and now the waiting begins to see how good a job they have done. If previous years are anything to go by, it will be a surefire success. Mrs. Chambers and Mr. Boesveld faced a major problem at the beginning of the year because of the two lunch hour system but they coped as did both the Junior and Senior Clubs. All in all it was a true team effort and hopefully this is a yearbook worthy of all the work that has gone into its production. This year has been one of my most hectic at TISS, but it has also been one of my most enjoyable. Being the Yearbook editor was a very enjoyable experience and one I won ' t soon forget. We had problems this year just like last but again they all worked out in the end. Thanks go to all the members of the club for the production of a great book. I would also like to thank Mrs. Chambers and Mr. Boesveld for their help and support throughout the year and for all the extra time they spent on the yearbook. There were times this past year when I felt I wasn ' t spending enough time in the yearbook room and other times that I felt that I was in there forever, but it has all been worth it. A successful yearbook not only depends on the people who put it together, but also on the people who appear on its pages. Thank you, fellow students for some wonderful pictures and thank you, staff members who withstood our constant pestering for information and help. I will always remember this year and all the things I have learned. I hope you enjoy looking through the book as much as I enjoyed helping to put it together. Thanks TISS for a wonderful year. Georgia Gliatis P.S. I forgot (honestly, I did truly forget) to thank the Camera Club and Mr. Olson for all their help and for their hard work in getting us the pictures we needed on time! INVITATIONAL TRACK MEET Thirteen hundred athletes from Quebec, Ontario, and N.Y. State gathered at TISS in May and it was George Harvey Secondary that came away victorious. TISS finished in 12th place overall after coming up against some of the best high school athletes in Ontario. The Big Mac Mile, a new feature at this year ' s meet, had a very successful first run and added even more excitement to the day. Thanks must be extended to both staff and students for being such great officials and to Mr. Hungerford and friends for doing such a great job of organizing the meet for the second year in a row. Our wonderful crew! Thanks. INUVIK EXCHANGE Twenty-four students and two teachers enjoyed the experience of a lifetime in March when they travelled to Inuvik for a week of Northern living. The students were hosted by their ' twins ' in Inuvik and they in turn hosted their new friends a few weeks later. It was an experience that will never be forgotten. Memories of the exchange will last a long time as will the friendships that were discovered. Our gang in Edmonton. Furry Friends TROUBLE- SHOOTING TISS ' s Pete Bourret and Steve Wright are this year ' s Troubleshooting champs. The duo placed first in the annual Chrysler Troubleshooting Contest held in Toronto. The contest consisted of a written test and the troubleshooting segment which requires the team to find and repair defects in a car before driving it over the finish line. A time limit is placed on the team. Nice going guys and thanks Mr. Millson for teaching them everything they know. Pete Bourret and Steve Wright BLOOD DONOR CLINIC SPRING TISS tried something new this year. Instead of our annual Winter Siesta (the carnival), council decided to have a Spring Fiesta. A variety of events and games were set up and everyone got involved and had mucho fun. The activities scheduled for both lunch hour and after school were very well attended and very successful. The Fiesta ' s first Senor and Senorita were Derek Arthur and our Mexican friend Armida Cesar. The pair reigned at the talent night and basked in its overwhelming success. Other activities included Euchre, ping pong and backgammon tournies. The Saturday night dance and Friday night Casino topped off the week of festivities. Congratulations must be given to council for all their hard work and let ' s hope it becomes an annual event and that it always enjoys the success it did this year. Adios. Secondary and honour secondary school graduation diplomas were presented in addition to numerous scholarships and bursaries which were presented to deserving graduates. The Honourable James A.C. Auld, Minister of natural resources and Minister of Energy for the province of On- tario was the guest speaker. Mr. Auld challenged the graduates to work at improving the problem areas created by previous generations. He pointed out that constructive criticism of present conditions must include the desire and the determination to change those conditions. This year ' s valedictory address was delivered by Dave Reynolds. He asked the audience to remember that the graduates held, i n their hearts, awards of thanks to the staff members at TISS who helped to bring them to this then- graduation evening. Whether it was the blood donor clinic or the council awards or the elections or the dances or the Fiesta, planning was the key to success. Most of this year ' s dances were council sponsored and all featured ex- cellent bands. The blood donor clinic was TISS ' 2nd annual and it too was tremendously successful, as were both the Athletic Awards banquet and the Council Awards assembly. This year ' s council will long be remembered as the one that instituted the Spring Fiesta as part of the school year. The Fiesta was a lot of fun and very successful. It will no doubt become a TISS tradition. Thanks must be extended to all the members of council for making this a very enjoyable and exciting year. -o- GAUNTLET -o- Each one of us must go through this valley of stares and snide comments - these two rows of grade 12 boys lined up and down the hall from the girls ' washroom to the cafeteria, You can feel eyes pick holes in you the way you walk what you wear.
