FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Under the direction of coaches, Gripentrog and Tetzncr, the Thorp Cards began pre-season football practice on August 22. Though the number of can- didates to report was small, the boys were willing to work and make sacrifices necessary for a winning team. All in all, the Cards had a fairly successful season -- winning three, losing four, and tying one. Tnoiu' AT CllIl'l'l'IWA FALLS The Thorp Cardinals traveled to Chippewa, where they played their first game of the season. The first half found Chippewa with a 14-0 lead and in the second half, they went on to score two more touchdowns to hand the Cards a 28 to 0 defeat. Tnoiu' AT CAIPOTT Again, the Cards were on the road as they traveled to Cadott to meet the Hornets on a very warm afternoon. The Hornets scored in the first quarter and in the second quarter, the Cards came back with lion Soderberg passing to Dave Guell in the end zone to equal the score at six all. The second half was a hard fought battle by both teams, with Thorp's defensive line doing a great job. The score remained ticd, 6 to 6. STANLEY AT TIIORI' Our first home game of the season was the stage of a rough and tough battle with our traditional rival, Stanley. The Orioles copped their first seven points in the first quarter and the score at the half remained 7-0. In the second half, the Cards returned the kickofi' to the Orioles' 45 yard line. Dan Winger, carrying in a series of plays, scored the Cards only touchdown. Later Stanley scored two quick touch- downs and as the game ended, the Cardinals were on the short end of a 21-6 score. Tnoizr AT NmI.1.sv1l,I,i-: Next on the agenda was Neillsville, where the Cards scored their first victory of the season. Thorp's first touchdown came in the second quarter when Dan Winger scored to give the Cards a 6-0 lead at the half. In thc third quarter, Harold Hallanger stole the ball and raced 61 yards to score Thorp's second touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Dan Winger made l':igt l iit3 -two his second touchdown of the game and as the.final whistle sounded, the score was Thorp 20, Neillsville 0. CoRNi-:LL AT Tiioizr qHomcmniingJ Next, the Cards met the Chiefs from Cornell, who as yet had never been scored upon in conference play. The second play of the game, the Cards scored on a pass from Don Soderberg to Dave Guell, who outran his defense 81 yards for a touchdown. The Cards led 7-0. Late in the first quarter, the Chiefs scored, and in the second quarter added two more touchdowns to lead at the half 21 to 7. In the third quarter, the Chiefs sco1'ed again, and then the Cards came back to scoi'e, with Don Soderberg going over from the 1 yard line to make the score 21 to 13. The final touchdown came in the fourth quarter, making the score, Cornell 33, Thorp 13. Mi-:NomoNii: AT Tuonr One of Thorp's best played games of the season was a 12 to 7 victory over Menomonie. The first half was a real defensive battle with the score tied 0 to 0. In the third quarter, the Cardinals scored when Don Soderberg passed to Harold Hallanger for a 6 to 0 lead. Then the Men- omonie team came back and sco1'ed to make it 7 to 6. The fourth quarter, with Don Soderberg doing a series of passing, the Cards scored again, when Dan Winger went over for the final touchdown, to give the Cardinals a 12 to 7 victory. THORP AT Owl-:N-W1THi:i: The first quarter of play found both teams deadlocked 0 to 0. Then late in the second quarter, the Eagles scored to give them a 6 to 0 lead. In the third quarter, the Eagles scored twice before the Cards could score with Don Soderberg passing to Bill Harycki for Thorp's only touchdown. The game ended Owen-Withee, 26, Thorp, 6. GILMAN AT Tixoizr The last game of the 1955 season, the Cardinals defeated the Gilman Pirates by a score of 46 to 0. John Klouda scored 3 touchdowns, with Dan Winger, Bill Harycki, Harold Hallanger and Dave Guell scor- ing once. Thorp's defense was strong, six seniors played their last game for Thorp.
