As the present school year draws to a close the members of the Senior Class, who have played the leading roles in the important events of the year, are moving toward the exits. This has been an unusually productive year in the annals of our school. The members of the Class of 1956 can well be proud of their achievements and successes. Records and events will live long in the memory of the active participants. The 1956 Seniorian is soon complete and its pages are replete with pictures and prose. It is my hope that the record is complete and that no significant event has been overlooked. Congratulations to Mr. Korpal, the Editor-in-Chief, and members of the Staff on a job well done. A SHOW IS BORN It was on September 1, 1952, when we, the senior class or 'tCast of Thorp High School entered as a group of 65 eager Freshmen. With Mr. Korpal as our class advisor, we elected our class officers. Jim Schauer as President, David Guell, Vice President and Josephine Hmielak, Secre- tary-Treasurer. On September 26, 1952, the Sophomores made us the ofiicial members of Thorp High School, by greet- ing us with the traditional initiation party. Homecoming was the next big event with Josephine Hmielak as our selected attendant. During this year the Booster Club chose Maxine Turenne, Ruth Smigaj, and Bernice Butterfield as Junior Cheerleaders. Diane Zaborowski and Mary Ellen Pabich were elected by the class, and represented our class in the Student Council. The following fall, we became sophisticated Sophomores. With Mr. Korpal as our advisor, we elected our officers, who were Jon Pitt, President, Joan Grucelski, Vice Presidentg and Mary Ellen Pabich, Secretary-Treasurer. Jackie Hedler was chosen a Junior Cheerleader and Ann Hedler was chosen to replace Bernice Butterfield. For the Homecoming attendant, our class chose James Biser. We also won second place on our float Sailing to Victory. This year Diane Zaborowski and James Biser represented our class in the Student Council. We were also very happy to have Bernice Butterfield as high salesman for the Curtis Drive, she received the beautiful Benrus watch. We finally reached the upper-classmen step, the Jolly Juniors. As advisors, we had Mr. Witzig and Mr. Nuskiewicz to help us along with our many problems. Shortly after school started, we elected our class officers again. They were: Donald Ryniec, President, l':i James Biser, Vice President, and Jo Hmielak, Secretary-Treasurer. Dave Guell was selected as the Homecoming attendant and he chose Bernice Butterfield for his date for the dance. We won first place with our fioat Time to Beat Cadottf' Darlene Gulcynski and Bernice Butterfield, Co- editors of the Junior paper, Card Clips. The paper was issued every two weeks throughout the year. On April 19, 1955, the Juniors presented their class play entitled, The Connecticut Yankee in King Arthui-'s Court, under the capable direction of Mr. Wenninger. The Junior Prom was held April 30, 1955. The theme was April in Paris and the reigning king and queen were Donald Ryniec and Mary Ellen Pabich. This fall, we returned as the Senior Cast. The elected class officers were: Bernice Butterfield, Presi- dentg Patricia Mamayek, Vice President, and Leora Dudansky, Secretary-Treasurer5 with Mrs. Swanson as advisor. Leora Dudansky, Bernice Butterfield and Jon Pitt represented our class in the Student Council. Mitch Biser, our football captain, chose Maxine Turenne as our Homecoming Queen. The attendants were Bill Harycki and Marlene Burkhardt. Our float, We Wish You Luck won first place. The Senior play, The Curious Savage, was staged in November under the direction of Mr. Wenninger. The Girls' Prom was held on February 4. The gym was decorated to the theme of Melody of Love. Marlene Burkhardt was the king and Jean Grucelski was the queen. Throughout the year, The Cardinal Hi-lites was published in the Tho1'p Courier. The task, which was the longest, was organizing the Seniorian. Under the direction of Mr. Korpal and our editor, Bernice Butterfield, along with the staff, we have completed the task. gi' Twvl ve Rocrm BHNZSCIIAWEL A niet!! .Xgaiuld Nuinnlay llaskvtlsall 1. 2, 3, 43 N0 nnflay Yollcyliall .Z, 3. 43 llas- km-tlmll I3 ,I uutlr:ill 1, 3, 33 For- unsivs 33 xl'll'I'llllS Day l'rugrani 3 'l'lxo t'ir1iin'4'lia'tlt Ynikcc In .', lxu ig Artlinr's t'nnrt ll'rinlna'- tiun StatTJ 33 'l'ln' l'uriuns Sav- tI'rmluvtinn Statll 43 Varil agm- I tllps Siillxl.iQlxll3'flllll'Ilillt'S1,1 'l'l1 MIl'IIlXl'1I, Houiim ILL 3-111f1.-Q cy gan-nl. aml still tht' wnn- nlvr gn-w, that uni- lu-:nl vnulnl Carry all llc' linuw, N imnilay llaskctliall 33 Noun' ilay Ynllcyliall 43 llaskcthall, Mini 1 I llntliill Mtnlg K :gt-'.3' fa, :at-r., 43 I UI'l'llSll'S 343 'l'lic t'unnct'ti- rut Yankee- in King Artliur's l'unrt tl'astl 33 'I'liv i'nriuns Savag:- Ctlistl 43 t'ar1linal lli' litts Ntitf fn L litm 4 K' rtl .. -i , a l'lips Staff 33 llnnstm-1' l'lulr 2, 43 llliscil l'lnn'us l, 2, 3, 43 llanil 1, ' l 4 itlnml illlllKNl!ll 9111 llrY'Iil!l htatt 43 l.t'llt'l'lllt'll sl lnl14. l10Rl'1'l l'A BURZYNSKI A right smart gal, nmrkuil lb!'lV1lll' prupcl'ty. lln- lmim'x'tu't1t Xalllwc In liing 'Al'lllllI S t'nui't tl'ruil-nv- tml i Stall! 4: l'.ll.A. l, 4, Svc- i'm't:ii'y .33 llnustur Vlulm l3 Mixt-il t'lli urns .2. ll0NALIl IMIIM Pete XYln-n on tln- farm, ilu as the fzirini-rs ilu. RENDEZVOUS OF CELEBRITIES QProphecyl Flash! This is your favorite Hollywood column- ist, Louella Parsonhopper - reporting on her recent evening at the Dairie Bar ------ Hello folks! What an exciting evening I had! So many celebrities andinteresting peo le! As I entered the Dairie Bar, soft piano music dbated out to me, rendered by the famous pianist, Bill Harycki. I noticed a large Bock of men around the hat check room and I discovered the reason was up and coming hat check girl, Maxine Turenne. I was directed to my table by the head waitress, Luanne Schmidt. Luanne as you know, is planning on opening her own restaurant soon. She will employ Jane Vetterkind and Rosemae Lukasiewicz as waitresses. I had hardly sat down when I noticed four in- teresting people seated at the table across from me: Diane Zaborowski, Bernice Butterfield, Jackie Hedler, and Marian Henke. They claimed they were on their honeymoons, but had gone by themselves as their husbands were farmers and too busy to leave home! They seemed to be having fun. Hearing rowdy voices at the entrance of the restaurant, I turned to see what on earth was going on. Upon investigation, I discovered that the place was being over-run with Navy men, pursued by two Navy nurses, whom I later discovered to be Second Lts. Darlene Gulcynski and Lou Ann Kaminski. They were passing through California enroute to see a fellow Wave, Jo Hmielak at Camp Schooschooga- moochie, in Alaska. Suddenly the house lights went out ...... the spotlights loperated by Hollywood's famed electric- ian, Roger Benzschawelj went on, revealing Kenneth Szymoniak and his mighty band, featuring as solo- ists, the jazzy Jerry Wnek, from the metropolis of Lublin, on his tuba, Rex Schmidt one of Hollywood's most sought after bachelors on his diamond studded trombone, and Eugene Wilhelm, from Pleasant View fDairy Farmj, a suburb of Thorp, on his hot cornet. Next the spotlight turned off - Now for some behind the scenes news: ...... Leora Dudansky and Virginia Swiontek have a highly honored position as private nurses to All-American, Mitch Biser, who is in the hospital with a broken leg. Ruth Smigaj and Mary Ellen Pabich are graduates of Mariane Stan- iec's Modeling School. Both of them are ke t occupied by posing for leading magazine covers Lgrgosy and Esquirej. The Act finished, I settled down to enjoy the starry atmosphere. Suddenly over the loud-speaker, Fred CKenneyJ Radtke was being paged. He got up immediately and left. Soon after, I heard of the tragic death of Roy Rogers' horse, Trigger. This accounted, of course, for Fred's uick exit, as he is Hollywood's top mortician. By the way, have you seen the fabulous new Radtke Funeral Home? It was designed by leading architect, Donald Ryniec. Don also designed the 'Pat's Beauty Shop on Hollywood and Vine. Miss Mamayek's hair styles are the rage of the country. About that time my meal came. It was really delicious. Among the marvelous kitchen staff at the Dairie Bar, is James Schauer, one of Hollywood's top chefs. All the meals are planned by dieticians, Rheta Hoffman and Millie Kurtinaitis. Upon finishing my meal, I began interviewing again. There was a party of big business tycoons and their secretaries that looked interesting. Five of the most promising secretaries were Pauline Depa, Rita Gostomski, Loretta Burzynski, Theresa Kowalski, and Mary Ann Wyczawski. I asked them how they got to the top so fast. They said, By hard work and NOT sitting on the boss's knee! There was a group of very intelligent looking men across the room. Among them was Michael Bogumill, Einstein's successor. Also I saw Leon Lato, who is working on a new theory in electricity. By the way, the new baseball team, The Pink Socks, were present too. I didn't get a chance to interview them but I talked to their agent, Louis Platt for a few minutes. Louis is also part owner of Hernando's Hide-a-Way in Las Vegas. The other part is owned by Donald Dahm, a farmer who dis- covered a uranium mine in his backyard. I recognized my old friend, Joan Grucelski, and took a few moments to compliment her on her new book that everyone is talking about. Joan is also a reporter for the Hollywood Tattler. Seeing what looked like a stag party ...... I crashed it. They were a group of stand-ins for lead- ing Hollywood actors. There was stunt driver, Paul Harycki and Jerry Wojt, who is Gene Autry's stand- in the rides the horses, as it is too dangerous for Autryj. Also there was John Klick, fresh out of the navy, who does a lot of stock car scenes. With them was an old friend, Frank Hilgert, a coach. I-Ie told me he taught girls Phy. Ed ....... Also with them was David Lussenden. If you have noticed the new ultra-modern cars many of the stars are driving, and wondered about them, well, they are Dave's brand of customized cars. Have you ever heard of Clark Gable's stand-in, David Guell? He does the love scenes. I can't figure out why Dave was with a stag party, though. I asked Jon Pitt, who had been body guard for Lana Turner, by whom he was employed now, and he nonchalantly told me, Marilyn Monroe! ...... Cigarette girls, Marlene Burkhardt and Dorothy Kliminski stopped by to sell cigarettes, so I took that as my cue to leave ....... I guess that covers just about everyone. So that's it, folks. This is Louella Parsonhopper, saying so long and thanks for listening! l':l ge NIIICICCII TO THE UNDERSTUDIES fClass Willj We, the graduating class of 1956 and the Cast in the theatrical theme, do hereby bequeath the following of our prized possessions to The Under- studies in this, our last will and testament. With the fine direction of Mr. Wenninger, we staged our class play April 19, 1956, entitled Meet Me in St. Louis. The gymnasium was beautifully decorated for the Junior Prom which was held April 28, 1956. The theme for the prom was In Apple-Blossom Time. Dan Winger and Jean Mattes reigned as the royal couple. MIXED CHORUS Composed of GI incmbersg 38 girls and 23 boys, the H155-545 Thorp High School Chorus did a fine job of presenting the Vocal part of the musical production. The Chorus was directed by Mr. Roy H. Ri-elle and under his careful guidance, the Chorus entered into Class A competition in the Eau Claire Music Festival. Two concerts were presented by the Chorus this year, one for Christmas and one in the spring. The school purchased new robes forthe group. They are Cardinal rcd and have white stolcs. THE CARDINAL HI-LITES Following tradition, the Cardinal Hi-liites made its weekly appearance in the Thorp Courier to bring into the spotlight the news and happenings backstage in Thorp High School. Lou Ann Kaminski and Michael Bogumill headed the staff as co-editors, working together, informing the public in the best way, what goes on within the four walls in the main studio. Mitch Riser, Louis Platt, and David Lussenden gave out all the secrets on how our actors keep their he-man physiques, by editing the Sports Column. Fred Radtke, Josephine Hmielak, Rheta Hoffman and Dorothy Kliminski took care of the news of our understudies and feature write-ups, while Jacqueline Hedler added to it with her news of Thorp High's future stars, the grade children. Joan Grucelski and Rita Gostomski wrote up the stars' biographies and also provided the column with bits of humor for added spirit to show that Hollywood isn't all work and no play. A great deal of credit for our success in publishing this column is owed to our advisor, Mrs. Gertrude Swanson, who helped us make our spotlight feature more ln- teresting and more enjoyable to read. On April 30, 1955, the Thorp High School Gymnasium was the setting for our formal dance. The gym was decorated in white and blue streamers with a red canopy over the main entrance, white fencing, decorated with red roses, around the floor to form a Paris Cafe. In the center of the floor stood an Eitfel tower, which brought out our theme, April in Paris, very well. Very appropriate music, sounding' like tiny rain drops on the studio's window- panes, was furnished by George Day and his Quintet. King Donald Ryniec and Queen Mary Ellen Pabich led the grand march and were attended by Mitch Riser and Ruth Smigai. The crown bearers were Cathy Conway I I' and Neil Broeren, 1.1.14 royal couple. Many thanks go to our advisors, Mr. Witzig and Mr. Nuskiewicz for their many hours of work and all the advice which did so much to make our prom such a great success. l':ige Forty-four My ,f M I j ,f if l +I APRIL IN PARIS Uppvr Lvft: Mary Ellcii and Mr. and Mrs. Paliicli llppvr Conti-rc Qlll'i'll Mary Ellvn Uppvr Right: King lion :incl Qu:-on Mary lflllmi Miclillc- La-ft: Jaiw, Kathy, lion and Ju-an Mimlfllv Right: Michal-l aml Jam' l.owvr Ln-ft: Mai'le-iw and Carl liuwvr Cmitc-1': Crowuiiig' of tlw Quve-n Lowe-r lligrlit: Jim and Maxim- lmgi- lfiirty 1 ,Q MW a' Standing: lim-ralzl Olson. ,lim Svliauer, Diane Zalmrowski, Miss Brask, llnrnlil llnllnngcr, Keith Blsirslmll. HOMECOMING The homecoming festivities bring one of our institution's greatest sports, football, to a semi-formal close. Two members of each class were chosen to compose a Home- coming Committee. They were: Gerald Olson, Yvonne Krupa, James Schauer, Jeanine Dallas, Diane Zaborowski, Marlene Burkhardt, Harold Hallanger, Faye Winger, and Keith Marshall. Under the direction of Miss Brask, and Mr. Hanley, this committee was broken down into several sub-committees. Each member was thus in charge of a task in pre- paring for Homecoming. Upon the shoulders of these committee members fell the responsibility of such things as obtaining firewood for the bonfire, arranging the parade with its floats, getting judges, selecting an orchestra for the Homecoming Dance, decorating the gym, and many other behind-the-scene items. We wish to thank each member of the committee as well as any other faculty advisor or studio stars who helped make another Homecoming such a great success. FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Under the direction of coaches, Gripentrog and Tetzncr, the Thorp Cards began pre-season football practice on August 22. Though the number of can- didates to report was small, the boys were willing to work and make sacrifices necessary for a winning team. All in all, the Cards had a fairly successful season -- winning three, losing four, and tying one. Tnoiu' AT CllIl'l'l'IWA FALLS The Thorp Cardinals traveled to Chippewa, where they played their first game of the season. The first half found Chippewa with a 14-0 lead and in the second half, they went on to score two more touchdowns to hand the Cards a 28 to 0 defeat. Tnoiu' AT CAIPOTT Again, the Cards were on the road as they traveled to Cadott to meet the Hornets on a very warm afternoon. The Hornets scored in the first quarter and in the second quarter, the Cards came back with lion Soderberg passing to Dave Guell in the end zone to equal the score at six all. FAREWELL We, the 'Sli Seniorian Staff, take this time to say Farewell and to thank the advertisers and anyone who helped us publish this book. After many hours of hand xxoil we now look upon the finished product and see that our efforts were not in vain We hope that you enjoyed looking through this, our Seniorian for 1956, as mum h as the Editor and the staff have enjoyed bringing it to you. IN MEMORIAM Un graduation of last year, May 26, 1955, we received the sad news that Mr. Piper, the rustodian of Thorp High School for many years, passed away. He had a heart ailment and worked up to the time, until about two weeks before the end of the school year. He will be remembered by the many grad- uating: classes and the community in which he lived and served. On behalf of the entire school, the Senior- ian Staff extends its deepest sympathy to Mrs. Piper and prays that the Grace of God will sustain her in the years to come. - l':igu Sevriilx M R. lim' Pirrnc 4 ff LD X fgfiikgy f ff EAT f S fi fri! rf . 1 ,U , F .
