V i 'li lwillhiil ilfiii .'1lfTll' THIQ EXODE i Class History In the course of human events, it becomes necessary for the members 'of a class to dissolve the social bonds which have connected them with an entire high school and to assume among the powers of earth the separate and equal stations to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them. A decent. respect for the opin- ions of teachers requires that they should declare the causes which lmpel them to the Q . . . LiCpd'T2l'femliistoi'y of the faculties of the Thorntown High School-for the past four years is a history of repeated injuries and' injustice QSO W0 C0USlfl0T0d lil all haVlY1g as a direct object the establishment of an. absolute tyranny .over these students. To prove this, let the facts be candidly submitted to an open-minded world. . 0 The faculty has repeatedly required that order be maintained at all times in the study hall. . . , , They have assigned lengthy lessons in all subjects and insisted upon perfect re- citations. , They have deducted from our citizenship grades for offenses of which even the Recording Angel failed' to take note. They have forbidden us the use of chewing gum in classrooms, hall and assembly. They have inflicted upon us examinations which McMurray himself would have fiunked in his youth. They have sent us to the very Gates of Death to retrieve a language whose last breath expired centuries before the Dark Ages. I - These are only a few of our innumerable grievances, detrimental to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness We, the Seniors of 1928, have been so persecuted that many of our number have fallen by the wayside or have fled in search of regions more favorable to their pur- suits of happiness. l In the autumn of 1924, twenty-eight unseasoned and badly frightened Freshies entered Thorntown High School. However, we soon regained our momentum, organized our class and chose Miss Peery and Mr. Neptune for our sponsors. Before the begin- ning of the second semester, Buren Richardson and Edna Mae Billingsly suvcumbed to the venomous glances of Wm. Royce and withdrew. A few months later Ralph Bailey followed in their footsteps. At nearly this same time Freda Peters, Helen Louise Ziegler and Mary Williams transferred to other schools, due to change of resi- dence, and we were joined by Ruth Leonard and Herbert Barnett, from neighboring schools. VVe began our Sophomore year without five of our former classmates, namely, Archie Hill, Herbert Barnett, Pauline M,undell, Lewis and Floyd Smith. Our grief at this loss was assuaged by the entrance of Vera Kepple, Robert Owsley, Marvin and Ross Bu1'kett. This year, we were efficiently sponsored by Miss Paddock and Miss Baker. In the course of the year, Helen Nance withdrew, thus decreasing our class membership. During our Junior year we were excellently sponsored by Miss Gauld and Mr. Spivey. Under their direction, the class play, The Fortune Hunter, was a pleasing success and almost everyone agreed that we knew how to manage a Junior-Senior re- ception. During this school year Donald Wait, Anna Cleaver and Roscoe Stewart join- ed' our depleted ranks. In the autumn of 1927. we Seniors were prepared to guide the erring footsteps of the Freshmen in the straight and narrow way. Our class was enlarged by four new members, Mildred Robbins, Elsie Sisson, .lean Johnson and Nellie Meeks, two of whom soon withdrew, one heeding the call of the wedding bells. This year we also lost our faithful student Walter Leach, 'who suddenly learned he was a misfit and de- cided to withdraw. At the beginning of the second semester Marvin Burkett, who had not attended school during the first semester. reentered. For our sponsors this year Miss Wilkinson and' Mr. McMurray were unanimously chosen. This, in brief, is our true history and these our grievances which we wish to bring to your attention. VVQ have come to the parting of ways and must hereby declare our right to choose our vocations. establish our own destiny, and enter unon the next lap of the journey we mortals call life fwhatever be 'the consequencesj It is our inalien- able right, as free persons in a free country to choose these things for ourselves. We, therefore, with all due respect to our parents, teachers and' classmates, do declare our- selves free and ind'ependent persons, and with a firm reliance on the protection, aid and sympathy of our friends and advisors of the past four years, we mutually pledge to each other and to posterity our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor. W Signed: The Class of '28. SEVENTEEN
